What books are you planning on reading this summer? :D
Currently reading Always Watching by Chevy Stevens. Gonna start the Shades of Magic series after. I know I’m super late but 🤷🏻♀️
Was thinking about starting The Raven Boys series
1. Sourcery by Terry Pratchett
2. Sputnik Sweetheart by Murakami
3. Demons by Dostoevsky
4. The Demolished Man by Bester
5. Embassytown by China Mieville
6. The Golem & the Jinni by Wecker
7. A Memory Called Empire by Martine
8. Red Sea under Red Skies (3th attempt, I guess Lynch isn’t for me?)
I'll be reading all of The Black Company in the order listed on the Mythbank app as well as Frontiersman, not sure what I will pick up after that.
Finishing Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes right now, then I want to tackle some big Booktube darlings like Six of Crows and Way of Kings!
"read your damn books woman." I think I'm going to put that on the white board above my desk so I can focus on that this summer.
This made me laugh out loud!
Emily changing her Goodreads goal is so me on December 31.
December 31: you're +10 books behind schedule.
Me: changes goal to the exact number that I've read.
Goodreads: YAY! You've completed your goal.
Perfect, go me.
Ina Willems 😂
The color of your shirt and makeup combo look absolutely amazing on you!! Literally had me saying woahhhh. Gorgeous. 😍
Children of Ruin should be the first one you read. 😇
Idea for everyone who‘s in a slump because of the current covid situation: I used the time at home to clean out my book shelfs and rearranged them. I liked them before but the process itself made me pick up a few books I had basically forgotten about and now I‘m really motivated to read more ☺️
Gosh! Read whatever you’re in the mood for. Also...many of us are struggling to focus on fiction currently (including me!) and that’s okay!!! For me, audiobooks while walking is my best reading, and I’m trying not to be mad at myself. Love you! ❤️
This summer I want to read Stephenie Meyer's Midnight sun, I've waited 12 years for that damn book
I feel you ❤ I don't know what is it but I can't focus on reading lately and that was never the issue for me, literal piles of books are staring at me and wondering what the f is wrong with me 😅
Thank you for wholesome content as per usual:)
Mary Dobra yeah, I spend like 6 weeks wallowing in despair and denial about my reading slump but fortunately was able to beat it!
Good luck to you as well!
I mean it’s hard to distract yourself from what’s going on out there. A pandemic, climate catastrophes, mass unemployment, militarization of police, greater mass surveillance, massive wealth inequality, the destruction of communities and dependence on mass consumerism as a coping mechanism, high risk of nuclear war (According to Gorbachev a higher risk than at any time during the cold war), decades of continuous decline, mass suicides, mass shootings (The U.S at least), lowering of life expectancy, all the while some of the most incompetent leaders to have ever grazed the political sphere. You know it does make it a bit difficult to focus.
@@alb0zfinest Well, yeah. You manage to name almost all of it. There's this feeling that the world is on the verge of something we are not prepared for ... sounds kinda apocalyptic but when you look at the data, let's say about climate change, it is actually apocalyptic and we don't have much time so yeah, reading (or any other) slump is understandable(
The Scythe trilogy is so high on my TBR list and I keep seeing people reading the last one whenever I'm out!
“Read your damn books, woman” that spoke to me in higher levels
Yeah you’re not gonna read red, white and royal blue. Bet on it. Or you’re gonna get halfway through it and DNF
Why?
that's exactly what I thought! I couldn't finish it either
I wanted to DNF it after a couple of first chapters because I couldn't stand Alex, but I pushed through and it turned out to be my favorite book of 2019. What a weird experience!
I was up and down with that book. It's totally my type of book, so I really thought I'd love it. I liked it at first, then the middle dragged for me and I skimmed a bit through that, then I read the last few chapters to finish it. I really think it's the world situation messing with my reading. I'm in that reading slump club like so many others.
She probably won't like it but I breezed through it! I love that book lol but no judgement for those who didn't
Your videos are the only happy thing in my life right now. Just wanted you to know. Thank you
‘Because, read your damn books woman’ ... made me laugh out loud!
Red, White, and Royal blue...good luck! 😂
I have heard such mixed reviews about this book! It seems to be recommended often on Booktube, but when it is, many others chime in and disagree
I liked it, but with major reservations. I admit I'm kinda looking forward to Emily snarking on it.
Hi Emily! It was really reassuring to hear you talk about how you’ve also been having trouble focusing enough to read with everything going on at the moment. Im in the same situation and was really stressing out about being behind on my goodreads goal. You gave me the perspective needed to realize it was ok to change my goal :) Also I always love your videos and you have great taste in books!
i love when you transition between English and French. flawless. I BELIEVE IN YOU! YOU WILL READ ALL THE BOOKS!
I can't believe that I've just found this channel, great content, your videos are really calming I don't know why, but I'm living for it haha.🌸🌸
is it bad that you being in a slump makes me feel better about my incapacity to read since this whole lockdown? haha great video as always Emily, you look gorgeous in that dress
I'm reading Leviathan Wakes right now, and liking it. It's helping a lot with my reading slump because the chapters are the perfect length.
Oh and Rebecca is one of my favourites. Daphne du Maurier is one of my all time favourite authors. Jamaica Inn is a brilliant one too.
Your top/dress is so beautiful!
Also, I just overcame my slump so there may be light at the end of your tunnel soon!! :)
I actually started to read Sci-fi because of you and now I'm hooked! Also, I'm flying through books at the moment, but the whole situation still stresses me out in other ways.
The last 5 books in the Wheel of time. And any other thrillers that I feel like reading.
I'm as excited for winter here as you are for summer there, hehe. I don't care if you get through all or even most of your TBR, I just like watching your progress. Even if you haven't read much between videos, I find it inspires me to read more every time you post! I literally just ordered all of Asimov's Robots books since I found them on sale, and I'm trying to decide what nonfiction I want to read next - history, economics/politics, science, or philosophy/religion.
I'm in a reading slump too since the lockdown in Argentina. And I' m a mood reader soo.... even more complicated!! Love your videos🤗🤗
I'm almost done with Crescent City and The Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes. I'm planning on reading, Midnight Sun, Chain of Gold, Crave, Where Dreams Descend, Mistborn, Crown of Midnight, The Diviners, Enchantment of Ravens, Truthwitch, Rebecca, Beach Read...Happy Reading📚
Hey Emily!! I've read This Is How You Lose The Time War and I really, really recommend the audiobook because the writing is pretty poetic and kind of heavy. I enjoyed the book, it was a very different concept. And also, I see that you own More Happy Than Not and I really recommend it too. It's perfect for your challenge and is worth every tear.
It’s so strange that CZcams is one of the only places where you get to see someones smile in these times
I love the idea of doing a seasonal TBR rather than a monthly! Excited to see what you end up finishing this month. :). I'm also reading With Malice this summer, I'm super excited to see if it's any good.
I've been waiting for June TBRs from booktubers so yay! Digging that top too 👍
This summer I’d like to finish books I started and didn’t finish yet 😂, fangirl, watership down, in love, nyxia #2. And books that have been too long on my tbr like, I’ll give you the sun, the opposite of okay, the astonishing color of after.
To Be Taught if Fortunate is absolutely wonderful. I think it'll change your reading slump, it paints humanity with love and respect rather than negativity and fear and it's perfect for a pandemic lockdown situation.
I had to watch for a second time today because I was busy working when I played it earlier...and I can not stop thinking about all of the alien books so I needed to write them all down!
This year has been such a struggle for me too. The last two years, I read 33 books in January alone, and this year I’m at 32 five months in. Ten of those are even rereads. Maybe summer can help us both turn it around. Good luck!
Emily you are looking so beautiful 💕💕 also, yes to all the sci-fi books. can't wait to hear your thoughts about them.
Don't worry, I also have a pile of half finished books I'm working through. I picked up Flowers for Algernon today and even though I'm trying not to start anything new, it's so short that I might make an exception.
I have been wanting to read This is How You Lose the Time War as well. I think it would be a good quick read since it is shorter! I picked up a Memory Called Empire recently from Book Outlet and I am excited to finally read that one! I have heard such good things about it.
I read throne of glass forever ago (and thought it was ok, mostly a waste of time) and literally just read crown of midnight last week because my friend pushed me too. The beginning was hard to get into for me too, but honestly by the end of the book I ended up really enjoying it/ the characters a lot more? Unexpected but I'm going to keep going, because I heard the series gets better from here!
If We Were Villains is one of my all time favorite books! I can’t wait to see your review for that!
So many good books! I easy have 50 on my TBR, but I want to get to A Curse so Dark and Lonely, Crown of Feathers, Tigana, and the Black Prism.....and a zillion others!
Love the idea of doing a whole summer long TBR! Definitely feels less intimidating! I don’t know how I finished This is How You Lose the Time War, it was wayyy too poetic for me and I ended up giving it one or two stars, but Im interested to hear your thoughts on it! On another note think you should definitely try reading The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan! I just finished it and it was AMAZING The Wheel of Time is definitely a large series but I’m hoping it’s worth it!
Definitely If We Were Villains and Addie LaRue. Can't wait to hear your thoughts about it
I loved Leviathan Wakes and Death's End! I hope the two will work out for you.
I've been in a slump too. Starting The Way of Kings did not help one bit. I finally pushed through after weeks and weeks and once I got halfway I really started to get into it. Now I have about 9% left and I feel like my love of reading has been rekindled. Push through, you can read them all this summer plus.
♥️ how you take charge of that Goodreads challenge 👢!
With you on the ongoing slump, I WILL be reading Hero of Ages this summer, oh yes indeedy..... 🤯
That seems like a really well mixed TBR genre-wise. And of course, it couldn't be an Emily TBR without Children of Ruin!
I also really want to read a Memory Called Empire!!! It sounds amazing, I just haven't convinced myself to buy it yet lol
I also hope to read Books 4 and 5 of the Wheel of Time in June, after reading books 1-3 this month, but we'll see lmao I also hope to get to Red Seas under Red Skies and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but my reading mood changes daily, so i dunno how well that will turn out lol
I've read the Toll and really like it. The ending is pretty impressive.
Love the rainbow and your hairstyle. I really want to have good bookshelf to put all my books. So that my background can be more colourful. I learn alot from your channel and slowly improving mine too. Thank you 😍
yep, you would think since I've been at home more that I would read more...nope. Hopefully I get back to it soon.
I never normally read romance but a friend recommended red white and royal blue, and it was fun to read. It made me chuckle a lot. And not cringe tooo much.
If we were villains. THAT BOOK IS FABULOUS. I even reread via audio and it was not a bad experience. (I don't generally like audio books. So nice surprise for me).
Death's end is on my TBR too! Also if you usually don't like romance, I don't think you'll like red, white and royal blue because I love that genre and still dnf-ed it.
P.S your earrings are so pretty!
You need to read the fifth season if you haven’t already !! Definitely a 5 star fantasy !!
Rebecca is one of my favourite books of all times!
Aww Emily you gotta read The Toll- it's SO good!
You have inspired me to do a month of Sci Fi so thank you!!!
Ooh seeing Becky Chambers on your tbr reminded me I should read the next book in the Wayfarers series
Don't be afraid of the two sequels athe "Toll" and "Children of God" . They are really good. Also, "To be taught if fortunate" and "2001: Space Odyssey" I think you are gonna like. The writing on the "This is how you lose the time war" it's a bit strange.
I'm so excited for you to read To Be Taught If Fortunate! It isn't connected to the series at all but it made me really happy. I also just finished Record Of A Spaceborn Few and adored Isabel and her wife so much. And I ordered This Is How You Lose The Time War and I'm really curious about it!
tbh i think maybe how much you like rw&rb depends a lot on your capacity for a very odd brand of escapism, i read it when i was stressed out last year and then again on audiobook at the beginning of quarantine so those were very influential circumstances for my liking of the book!! either way though i hope your reading goes well :')
Good month to try Truman Capote. I love In Cold Blood.
I really want to read With Malice! There aren't great reviews on Goodreads but it sounds like something I'd enjoy.
This Is How You Lose The Time War was sooo good. Can't wait to hear what you think of that tbh
Excited to know your opinion about Blindsight, I started it two years ago and I couldn't get through it, maybe I was not in the mood. I also found it complicated but maybe if you like it I can push through it haha 😂
Currently reading the Sparrow rn!
I also want to read With Malice.
Trust me, The toll is as good as the other ones. Still, I think the second one is the best.
same !Thunderhead is my favourite. I really enjoyed the toll but the lack of rowan and citra 💔
I just finished Rebecca and really enjoyed the writing.
That top is everything 😍
I feel you on the first halves of the Three Body Problem and the Dark Forest. Fortunately, Deaths' End doesn't have the same problem. I hope you do get to read it soon and I'm curious to see how you feel about the protagonist lol
omg I have read This is How You Lose the Time War twice this year - it's so, so good. It is gorgeous! Really curious to see what you think of it. The writing is gorgeous and the concept is really interesting
Oh I'm really interested in We Were Villains too! I've read a book that had a similar premise (and literary tone), as The Secret History called The Red Word by Sarah Henstra. It's a Canadian book so I haven't seen much of it online, but it won the governor general's award :)
Is Steve still visiting you? I haven’t heard you talk about him in awhile lol
That blouse is so cute!
I was also postponing reading the Toll because of the fear that it won't be good but it was. And then I was regretting not to read it earlier :D
I love that your French shows when you pronounce how 🤭💖
Dont fear the toll. I personally felt like it was better than the first two. Also a Memory Called Empire is a 5 star read so move that up :D
Leviathan awakes is awesome book and the show The Expanse is awesome series
I really liked To Be Taught If Fortunate. I read Rebecca this year and I really enjoyed it. I can't believe you still haven't read The Toll, don't be worried that it's not as good as the previous two books, it's a great book and a great end to the trilogy.
Can't wait to know what you think of Children of God, I'm hesitant to pick it up.
I also want to read Normal People because everyone is going on about the TV show. I'm a bit apprehensive because it seems to be one that is going to hit hard in the feels and idk if I'm ready for that.
I am going to try and finish the Hunger Games which has been on my list for 3 years now... I can't get through the third book but I want to finish it before watching the films.
Girl, lower that Goodreads as much as you want! I was reading a book a day for a while, got too eager, and boosted mine from 75 to 100, but now I'll be back to normal with work soon and might lower it back down to 90 or something to save myself from trying to read a book and a half per week.
I have loved everything I have read by Mary Doria Russell. They have all been five star reads! I have not yet read at the sparrow or the second book in that duology and I'm looking forward to it. Thank you for the recommendation for memories of empire. It looks excellent!
I read The Sparrow because of you and loved it but I didn't read the sequel for the same reason. Thanks for taking the hit on that one, potentially (hopefully not). 👍
take a shot every time emily does the 🤞 gesture
I do remember when you said that part of your TBR was a poetry book called "The princess salves herself in this one" or something like that and i said you'd hate it, and you did.. so i'm very sure that you won't like red, white and royal blue either haha
I've been the same with struggling to find the motivation to read but I've been like that since last August and I don't know why xD 🙈🙈
I got beautiful UK edition of "Rebecca" a couple of months ago because the movie with Armie Hammer was coming out (I love him!). But now I'm in the reading slump, don't know when the movie will be released and book is just sitting on my shelf🤷♀️
I've just finished The Three Body Problem. I found the first half really difficult to get into but then I loved it. I want to know the ending too so I'm going to read the rest of the trilogy. Some of the science just loses me but I have enough knowledge to have a general idea of what's happening but sometimes I'm just like 🤷🏻♀️
Rebecca is one of my favorite books of all time, you have to read it as soon as possible! I wouldn't call it horror, more of psychological thriller.
I read Rebecca this year and loved it!!!!!
I started following your channel not long ago, and I absolutely love it, thank you for good content :)
I you have time, and haven't still read it, I recommend you read John Dunning's "Booked to die"....It's a fiction/mystery...about detective trying to solve a murder of a book hunter. The detective is also a book collector and huge book lover, talks constantly about books and there are so many good book references in the book. The book is so easy to read, not long either.
I had my books reading challenge as well. Had to change it to 70 >c
I put my reading challenge at 80 and Goodreads has been a biotch at me too! I'm keeping it at 80 and am planning on flying through all my 200 -300 - page books this year. I'm at 24 books read....
I cannot focus on a TBR lately. I should make a Summer one so I feel less restricted than month by month
Haha, I’m in the same boat with the Expanse series, couldn’t find book 2.
I hope you will get out your reading slump. My remedy for that is to read a romance novel but it will probably put you off even more :)
I highly recommend Rebecca (the book is much better than the film) and now I want to watch My Cousin Rachel (thanks for the recommendation).
I am excited to hear what you think of This is How You Lose the Time War. I would almost buy that one just for the cover. :) Are you liking 2001? I haven't read it but I love the movie. It's on my TBR.
So excited for Addie Larue. I'm hoping there will be arcs on UK Netgalley. Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
I have an arc of A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik - a magic school where you either graduate or die.
So much good stuff on your TBR! I have Time War up for June and I hope I like it as much as my friends seem to.
I was really disappointed that the new (ish) My Cousin Rachel movie didn't get more love. I thought it was a really faithful adaptation, and the book *almost* dethroned Rebecca as my all-time favorite. Almost. Definitely read Rebecca sooner rather than later. It's so much better than the Hitchcock film, which I felt did not understand the book at all.
