Nail Ranch Hunting

  • Cason Caraway had the opportunity to hunt the Nail Ranch in Albany, TX. Shackelford County is known for big ranches and big bucks, and from what I saw, it is true. This management buck hunt was a blast and it felt so good to help Jamie Nail manage the deer herd. Jamie Nail is a true steward of the land in his deer and cattle management practices. Jamie Nail owns and manages 19,500 acres in Shackleford County as a cattle, horse, and deer hunting ranch. The Nail's are true cowboys through and through. I had a great bow hunting experience, but the best experience was meeting Jamie and his son Jack. This family is the true meaning of carrying on a family legacy.
This was a management hunt and we were only after 4 1/2 years old and older 8 points. This ranch grows giant trophy deer and Jamie's management practice requires him to cull out any inferior deer that are not contributing to the management practice. Seeing giant 3 and 4-year-old trophy bucks, that was off-limits, proves that Jamie is doing the right thing. These deer are used to the feed truck and will throw most caution out to come to eat from one of the only food sources in this ranch land. Jamie puts on a true "show" every evening by driving the ranch roads and slapping the trip hopper spilling piles of corn on the road. Seeing so many deer filtering off the hills is a sight most will never see. Seeing this large population of deer, it was obvious that the herd needs to be managed to keep the numbers in check.
Thanks to Chase Chapman and Chris Hennesy for a great time, and of course, thanks to the Nail Ranch.

Totally awesome!!! My uncle Jay Stevens used to guide for Turkey on the Nail and was always telling me stories about the ranch. He has since passed away. Hell, I would just like to drive around with a freaking video camera. I can’t imagine getting to hunt it.

They're culling inferior genetics.. before they bred. No time to wait for hunters to miss or not like a particular buck. Or not wake up to hunt. This is big boy stuff....biatach I'm from Texas...no crying in hunting!

In west Texas there are SO many deer you gotta do something to thin them out or the land will just not support the numbers. Also in that country, forget food plots. It is way too dry. Hunt your way, as long as it is legal we will hunt ours.
