  • My experience with installing Touratech crash bar reinforcements onto the O.E.M. crash bars on a BMW GSA 1250. Also, the problems I had after dropping the GSA 1250 a few times.

    Had my bike three weeks (2022 GSA)... My father went for a ride on it yesterday and dropped the bike at a standstill. Think he just laid the bike down slowly on its right side... I now have a bent crash bar on the right side (similar to yours). Going to replace with a new part and get the Touratech bars straight after... On the plus side. He laid down a £19k bike and did £170 worth of damage. I call that a win.

      That is the best course of action. Install them right from the get go.

    Take a look at the BMW bikes at the riding schools. RawHyde, BMW or TOURATECH. None of them have the support bar installed. If it bends just bend it back with a rubber mallet. I rather bend the crash bar than bend the frame

    • @StanForAdventure
      @StanForAdventure  Před rokem

      A lot of time right from the get go the schools put on beefier crash bars. The Touratech bars are a bit different in shape and I think a bit thicker. Regardless, I tried bending my OEM crash bars back into shape and trust me, it's a lot harder then you think. I tried both with the bars on the bike (you have to be careful not to ruin the valve cover or the gasket seal BTW) and also I tried with the bars off the bike. The trick there is that the bars attach to the bike at three points. It became very difficult to bend the bars back into the original position keeping those three connection points in spec. The slightest bend one way starts to shift those connection points and you end up chasing your tail. Just put on the reinforcements first or switch them out for an aftermarket upgraded crash bar. Thanks for the comment.....S.F.A.

    gues what i droppped mine on the parking lot and it bend and damaged the valve cover.
    so i am thinking about replacing the cover and the crashbar

    I got hit from behind a few weeks ago, on my 2020 R1250GS, the bike was pushed from under me onto the left side, the OEM Crash Bar folded into the Cylinder Head Cover and cracked it, luckily I was covered by the 3rd Parties insurer, when I replaced it with the OEM Bars, the BMW Tech recommended and fitted the Touratech Strengthening Bar's on both sides, because of the lack of strength in the OEM Bars, for precisely the issues you and I have experienced.

      I agree. Manufacturers are opting to sell these instead of full crash bars, because of cost. Even Alt-Rider offers this option, however they aren't cheap.

      So you are saying that OEM Bars have lower quality then Touratech? Interesting. I have a question. I have just bought my 2023 1250GS and I am searching for the Engine Guards. Do you recommend stainless steel or carbon steel bars? Some people say that carbon steel is better because it absors more energy in the impact.

    • @KarlyBoy
      @KarlyBoy Před 7 měsíci

      @@SailorPhilit’s more of a design issue, the BMW bars on have 3 connecting point all on the lower side, so they can bend upwards on a drop, the Touratech have 4 points of connection which provides strength and resistance on a drop

    I agree that the stock BMW crash bars are not substantial (probably due to weight concerns) but my 2020 1250 GSA has been hammered in rock piles and it has definitely gone down much harder than yours and mine have held up pretty darn well. I had the tour tec bar like yours installed before I took delivery and it definitely has saved me butt. Also Mine tour tec bars never lined up in the exact spot anyway (might be due to the engines on left and right not being exactly matching)

    Falling to the side from a standstill exerts more force on the crash bar than if you went down whilst moving.

  • @bertgroothuis2419
    @bertgroothuis2419 Před rokem +1

    It is not that the crashbars suck. The left and right cilinder are NOT exact parallel or exactly opposite each other. One is about 1 cm more to the front than the other. So the reinforced TT-bars can't be at the same position from the OEM-rubber.
    And to frustrate you a bit more... the rear wheel is a bit out of line too. And at last: brakepads are different in thickness left and right from the brakedisc. All of this it true.

  • @col8981

    Is this design suitable for of road use? I don't think so with the engine sticking out sideways, the bike is too big and heavy to be dropped on the engine

      Lower centre of gravity means you’re less likely to drop it in the first place. Also - watch Mongrel Dog Productions - he’s taken his GSA all over outback Australia - well past 120K. So yes. This is capable off road. GS means street on off road FYI.

    Have you actually thought about the symmetry of the engine? You know that one piston is further forward than the other right? And that is why there is less gap between the crash bars and the engine cover.

    • @StanForAdventure
      @StanForAdventure  Před rokem

      Yes I know that and wish that was the case. In my attempts to bend the bent side back I took a lot or measurements at the dealer on an OEM. I hated myself for letting my situation happen before I added reinforcement. I wanted the bend Not To Be True. But sadly it was and that was the day I had to let go of the mindset that my bike was still in pristine condition. Thanks for the comment, I’m sure it will help others…S.F.A.
