Thumbs up for the video and a hard work you put in it. Love that you matched the focal distance and range as much as possible. Both: zoom and primes have their place in wedding photography, with either better subject separation or putting subject within a context, in my mind. Great tip at the end of the video, combining 2.8 zoom with a fast prime. That should work the magic!

Thanks Magic! I shoot mainly motorsports which requires basically the entire focal range possible on full frame sony. In my case 16-600mm. I tried shooting primes last season and carrying so many lenses out on the race track was ridiculous. This year, thanks to your video, I’ll be shooting with zooms and my favorite 50mm F1.2 GM!

I shoot GM primes wide open for literally everything… I am honestly surprised how much better F2.8 looks for wedding photos… this might be the only time I don’t want more bokeh…. F2.8 has enough bokeh but doesn’t ruin the story. I need to think some things over lol

I'm entering the wedding scene from a commercial photography background. I'm new to Sony gear and I was convinced that their 50 1.2 and 35 1.4 primes were the way to go. Then I found this review, with the side by side images. I'm with McWafflesPK, the 2.8 aperture blurs the bg nicely but not to the point where the flowers and candle become blobs of blurriness. There's a time and place for the max aperture of the primes, but not every shot in the album. My 2 cents. 😁

I am no pro photographer, but if you look at 8:15 you can see that only guys eyes are in focus when using 1.2. But on 2.8 his whole face is. I definitely prefer 2.8 there. Would be nice to see how 1.8 or 2.0 looks. Why do ppl use 1.2 and 1.4 for portraits? Is max bokeh better than whole subject in focus?

Excellent video. For me the wide open large apertures actually detract slightly from the photos as the foreground OOF areas are just colour "blobs" whereas the 2.8 actually has blurred OOF with a little definition so you know that it is a rose or candle etc. Only my opinion though. The primes definitely and unsurprisingly have more of the wow factor though. All the lenses render beautifully. The 24-70 must be easier to use for a wedding though surely? Instead of continually changing cameras. But I guess it is whatever you are used to.

I have got the 24-70 F2.8 GMii and have been considering getting primes as I love bokeh, but looking at your comparison I am more likely to stay with the zoom for the flexibility, maybe adding just the 50mm F1.4 prime for specific portraits. In most of the photos I actually preferring the zoom with less bokeh to show the setting better.

  • @arhon888

That was a very useful comparison. Thank you! I have been eager to see a zoom vs prime comparison done in this way for a long while. I have a 24-70 and 55mm which complement well. Generally, when I use my zoom, I use it like a set of primes, I think about the focal length that would work best for the subject and zoom with my feet. The times I use a zoom are when I cannot get the framing I want because I am restricted in terms of where I can stand, or think I may miss the moment if I walk in closer. It is also good for more stealthy shooting, as people are less aware of you moving in to take a more intimate shot. As you said, primes a great when you need greater separation or a little more light, and something more lightweight.

For people (and pets) I use my Sony 24mm 1.4 GM on the Sony A7RIV in both "full frame" and in APSC mode (36mm equivalent) and the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 also both in "full frame" and APSC mode (82mm equivalent) because of eye-dectection autofocus. So two Lenses becomes to four Lenses ! I have two A7RIV Cameras, so one with the 24mm and the other with the 55mm mounted, a GREAT set !

I absolutely agree… whenever i shoot a wedding with zooms its a bit more convenient, and the images are really good…however, whenever i shoot with mostly primes, im immediately in love with the look…they just have something extra, something dreamy, and special about them with the bigger aperture…it doesnt show in every image, but on average, it really pays off… not to mention the much increased IQ when shooting in lower light for the extra colour depth and lower noise…

Excellent comparison, thank you very much.
Personally, I think that for closer shots from half body upwards, the zoom defends itself because f 2.8 is fine, it gives more sharpness in the whole face and that looks better even if some bokeh is lost in the front and in the background, but for shots more open or longer there is definitely no comparison. and the iso difference also if we want to shoot with natural light.
    Many, many thanks, really excellent.

That is really helpful, thanks. The prime lenses look so much better, especially when zoomed in. This noisy or grainy impression of the images (even at low ISO) has always bothered me a lot with my 24-105. I will definitely get a 35mm 1.4. Still wondering if the GM is worth the huge price difference compared to other lenses in the range.

Here in Finland where is plenty of sun half the year and no sun at all the other half, I’d say it is a must to have at least one prime lens with wider aperture. Personally I find the most important advantage wider apertures have is the ability to for faster shutter speeds. The ISO performance is so good now days so even ISO 8000 is manageable.

Great video ! Personally I love both zoom lenses and primes. When I shoot in extreme low light, need maximum of blur and have freedom of movements I go for primes. For events, when I need to get variety of shots quickly (wide and tight), when the background is far away, when the freedom of movements is limited (crowded places or rocky seaside) I go for 24-70 zoom. These are different tools for different scenarios.

It then makes me think how good the Tamron 35-150mm would be for wedding fotography given that it's f2 from 35-50mm I believe. The Tamron paired with a 50mm GM f1.2 would make a great combo.

Excellent information. This goes right inline with the top photographer's recommendations. Shooting prime is essentially why you're hired for. Shooting with zooms primarily is a disservice to the client. If I were to pay someone for capturing my wedding, knowing what I know, I'd mandate than they shoot with primes for most of the wedding. Zooms are convenient but no way would I ever run with just a 24-70 for most of the wedding. That's just lazy and the pictures quality is usually not as good as a prime lens.

A little late to the party, however:
For portraiture: 70-200mm f2.8 would give good bokeh, especially if you are shooting outdoor, and using focal length in 105-200 range. When shooting outdoor you can try and manipulate the distance between your subject and background to get smoothy bokeh, while your subject is fully in focus (nose to hair, not just eyes).
Indoors, its hard to beat primes with 24-70 for portraiture, here 35, 50, and 85 depending on space available, they are preferable. If you are doing group shots, then 24-70 is your friend, as getting all faces in focus for a group shot is a challenge with f1.4 or 1.2.
    BTW, nice video :)

Congrats on a great review. For me I liked some of the images on the primes, and with some other shots especially the candles having more depth of field more in focus the shots looked better at f2.8. For me basically it all comes down to time restraints. Most weddings don’t give us much time so being a canon user the happy medium is the newer 28-70mm f2 it’s almost Like 3 primes in 1 and sort of a bridge in between. Do I use it all day long? No it’s damn heavy but for situations such as Ceremony and main bridal party Portraits it’s perfect. I don’t recommend it for everyone, some people will get turned of by the weight/size. But once you realise how quickly and with great quality your getting thru your shots you tend to forget about the weight. Hopefully more manufacturers like Sony or sigma will make something similar,

I was getting shots where the timing of things in the background, candid poses/expressions, light conditions created a much better image overall. These are split-second things, things no matter how much you finetune a prime kit like I did with 2 or 3 cameras with holsters, noone be quick enough to catch vs on a single lens.
A planned photoshoot is one thing. But when it comes to event coverage, I'll trade prime IQ for timing every time.

I also bought this zoom lens because i want to eventually get into videography and travel. Bottom line: if you want something versatile and can do it all, then go for the 24-70 GM II. if youre referring to the first generation, then don't bother. if you want a solid staple lens to go inbetween your 20 and 90mm then go for the 50 if you dont mind changing the lens all the time, cause 20 and 90 is a huge margin.

Look, i think zooms have an advantage of range. Having scientific precision vs capturing the moment as a comparison is not comparable if adequate framing and subject is in focus. With high iso cameras, having a large aperture is more tantilizing. I actually prefer more background in focus capturing a more complete setting. I have never shown a client a photo where they complained the bokeh or the background was dissapointing by using a zoom lense.

Hi Magic an interesting video. I'm mainly a Sony prime shooter got 20, 24, 35, 55, 85, 90 macro and 135mm. Most max aperture available bar 85mm f1.8 (didn't like heft, cost of f1.4 there). Was thinking about buying a 14mm GM f1.8 too and possibly a 50 f1.2 GM but holding out on both those for now. I also use zooms for convenience 16-35mm f2.8 GM, 24-105mm f4 G, 70-200mm f2.8 GM mk2 and 200-600 G with 1.4x on 70-200 for mid tele options to 280mm. So I go both ways and try to pick lens(s) for assignment or trip I'm doing. Albeit for portraits, AF eye acquisition speed and boker the 135 f1.8 remains unrivalled, but my new 70-200mm mk2 isn't too far off that lofty standard, but in more versatile package.
I never liked original GM 24-70 f2.8 (big, heavy, slow, expensive). Went 24-105 G f4 for rare occasions I need versatility and a one lens walkabout solution. In practice it performs way better in IQ than expected. I sometimes use that with either my 35mm f1.4 or 55mm f1.8 as a light 2-lens option that can handle low light and generate perceptible background boker whilst still being able to cover most useful focal lengths. Albeit for portraits, AF eye acquisition speed and boker the 135 f1.8 remains unrivalled.
I have yet to get into video properly but think the stabilisation and range of the 24-105 will prove a good option, so I'm still keeping it for now. But since receiving my mk2 70-200 lens and used with either a 24mm or 35mm f1.4, my 24-105 hasn't seen any use. But I'm getting conflicted again (bad GAS) and find myself wondering about buying the new GM mk2 24-70, despite my love of primes and earlier reservations about a mid-range 'so what' zoom etc etc. Why several reasons, smaller, better IQ and for many situations I find I'm stopping down a f1.4 or f1,8 lens to f2.8 anyway. Why? Well I learnt that extreme boker isn't always so great anyway - sometimes it just looks like missed focus with little perceptible sharpness unless a face/eyes are pretty large in the frame. With my 135mm at f1.8 it's quite easy to get one eye sharp and another eye a bit soft. That can look good, but not all appreciate that extreme shallow DOF, so usually I shoot with both eyes in same plane of focus if using that lens at f1.8. The same principle applies to a lesser extent with shorter lenses like my 35mm. So maybe thre is a use case for me too with a mid range trinity-zoom?
Clearly I suffer badly with lens GAS! I once owned a 28-70 f2.8 Nikkor bought in 1998 when first launched, but sold when I switched to Sony. I always felt the so called fast (f2.8 ha ha) 'pro' mid-range 'trinity-zoom' was unexceptional, unexciting, hefty, overpriced and generally overrated. BUT strangely now l have a great quality 70-200 f2.8 GM mk2 which I use regularly and love it's making me reflect on how I shoot and how much better Sony mk2 glass is. I had hitherto previously rejected the 70-200mm f2.8GM original. But that could change in mk2 guise. Yet even if I were to buy and use it would be for convenience, speed of capture/work (at events), lighter less bulky travel options but I think I would still want a f1.4 prime for low light and occasional boker.

1.) Since your´re a prime shooter you´re not used to have "just" 2.8. Yes DOF is better on wide, but not on the longer side. It´s noticeable for you (and me) but not for the client.
2.) You cant compose images the same with 2.8 and 1.4. Most of the time it doesnt work.
3.) As you said the zoom gives you freedom. And that´s the key. It could be the difference between not being able to take the shot (not have the right space) and taking it.
4.) That said with 33/40/60MP you are prob able to run around all day with 1-2 primes and still be able to cropin in post. 8MP is enough even for big prints.
5.) Colors dont matter. At least not this amount. Your client wont see it. Just you and me. And that doesnt matter.

@@rumporridge1 Leica's are more for collectors not for the young bulls, Leica's are like what cars are to Jay Leno, he likes classics not because they perform better but for nostalgia and the history. Sony, Canon, Nikon, etc... are more for the professional, entertainment, hardbody shooters who want the best of the best results. Just because it looks different or has a different look doesn't mean it's better, ie: just because Kanye gets a hoodie from Wal Mart tears some holes and sprinkles bleach on it that doesn't make it better than a Nike hoodie lol it just means a sucker is so insecure he will pay 5 times the price to look different and hopes someone notices when he could just get the higher quality Nike sweater which performs better and is more comfortable, just saying.. lol

@@barretogods7178 well I have shot all those brands. And now in shooting Leica. I shoot professional with the SL2, based in NYC. I don‘t have any equipment as part of a collection to sit on a shelf. I’m not well off but I chose to shoot with the best equipment I can afford. Now if you chose to shoot with those other brands that’s fantastic. Good for you. I use what works best for me and what looks best to my clients. Take care and enjoy your weekend.

@@rumporridge1 I didn’t mean to slight u man, I shoot professionally as well, not based in NYC but in California not necessarily based anywhere I’m not tied down to any location even though I own two studios with different brands of bodies as well, I’m not biased but facts are facts just because someone invested in vintage cars it doesn’t mean those vintage cars perform better, it means that’s their preference they like the look and feel of them but there’s newer cars that will blow them out the water. No disrespect I could be talking to someone who is a professional and already knows this even though if I read between the lines and analyze what u say and would take a guess I suspect ur a hood booger who’s talking out their ass.

so many wedding photographers thinks that they are great photographer if they can separate their subjects to the background,. to be honest to much bokeh ruined the photos,. especially if clients paid for the place and reception with beautiful flowers and backgrounds,. why do you need to bokeh your entire shots?? those photographers who rely to much in background blurs are the photographers that are very weak when it comes to composition and story telling's,.

your 24-70GM is sucks and not sharp at all,. thats why theres a version 24-70 ii gm,. but still not very sharp,.
thats why you need prime lenses because your zoom lense doest give enough light and sharpness,.
