Ultimate Home Smoke Filtration System! Does it work?!?

- Kirby Allison talks about the cost and steps taken in the creation of his $20,000 smoke filtration system for the new studio smoking room to help purify the room of cigar smoke during shoots and when he just wants to have a cigar with his lunch or when in a meeting. He puts it to the test with special guests from halfwheel.com to see how fast the system works after hot boxing the studio with cigar smoke and then turning it on.
ABOUT THE SMOKE FILTRATION SYSTEM
The smoke filtration system is designed around the Camfil CamCleaner 2000, which is an industrial-grade filtration system that allows for both MERV-14 particle filtration and active carbon molecular filtration. The system has a capacity of 2,000 cubic feet a minute, which is insane! This allows the total volume of the air in my office studio to be exchanged once every 3-4 minutes. The result is over 25 air changes an hour, which quickly removes any and all visible smoke from the room. It is so effective that with two to three people smoking at the same time, there is practically no visible smoke at any time!
Another important component of the smoke filtration system is the independent air conditioner. This ensures that there is no positive air pressure to push smoke outside the room or any air return to pull smoke into the office HVAC. I also did not design any negative air pressure because the room is 100% sealed at the door. So, while smoking with the door shut, I am not worried about smoke escaping the room.
In addition to the CamCleaner, which filters the smoke particles and odors, I installed a fresh air exhaust, which is basically a roof-mounted commercial air exhaust fan (the same type used in a commercial kitchen) that is paired with a fresh air inlet (basically a hole in the roof). When the system is turned on, the fresh air intake opens up to allow fresh air to circulate. I generally leave this running overnight after I'm finished smoking to exchange the office air with fresh air to further remove any odors.
JANUARY 2020 UPDATE
I couldn't be any happier with the system. It totally exceeds my expectations. The CamCleaner 2000 is a BEAST that is so effective that I was actually able to dial the unit back from 2,000 CFM to 1,500 CFM. The smoke filtration is effectively silent thanks to the unit being being ducted in from an adjourning room.
I am also happier than I expected with the fresh air intake / exhaust system. Instead of leaving the CamCleaner running all night after I'm finished smoking, I instead switch on the fresh air intake system and allow it to exchange the air in the office with fresh air. This helps further remove any odors and prevent the air in the office from becoming stale.
WOULD I INSTALL THIS SAME SYSTEM AT HOME?
This is the $1,000 question. The short answer is no. Short a $3 mm + mansion, the system would be overkill for most residential applications. For one, the CamCleaner unit itself is quite large and would have to be located in an attic and then ducted down. And the ductwork would be quite extensive in order to get the system to function properly. One day... but not anytime soon for me.
Instead, for a home office or library, I think a commercial-grade air exhaust system that vents smoke and creates negative air pressure paired with a high-end consumer grade molecular air filter such as the IQ Air MultiGas (amzn.to/3fQwdqT). Would be ideal. you'd have to be careful to not have any air returns in the smoking room, which would contaminate the HVAC for the rest of the house. But, otherwise, good air exhaust and negative air pressure would prevent smoke from leaking out while the IQ Air MultiGas would eliminate any residual odors if left to run overnight.

It’s very important to filter out as much smoke as possible and replace it with fresh air excited to watch glad to see the new office is really being put to the test
no shit sherlock
@@MT-fu8rz thanks for the reply have a good day :)
I've just updated the description of this video with some additional notes. There is no question that this system would be overkill for most home applications. For one, working within the constraints of a residential home would be challenging, especially when it comes to creating the necessary ductwork.
I am actually working on building a home (spec build), and I think that I am going to integrate a strong, commercial air exhaust system into my study to create as much negative pressure as possible and, essentially, pull fresh air from the rest of the house while venting the smoke. I'll then pair that with a good consumer molecular carbon filter, like the IQ Air MultiGas (amzn.to/3fQwdqT). What I like about this over the RabbitAir is that the unit uses actual carbon canisters. This means that you are getting MORE CARBON. My problem with the RabbitAir and other consumer air filters is that they contain almost no carbon... no carbon means no odor filtration.
And when it comes to filtering odors, there is no question that simply replacing smoke with fresh air is your best bet. Most consumer filters don't exchange the air enough to make much of a difference when it comes to odor. This is why exchanging with fresh air is so important.
@@kirbyallison Wow thanks for the reply I’m sure we would all love to see the system that you put in your home I’m currently also trying to find a solution for ventilation in my own smoking lounge in my house that I am currently building
An alternative use of that money that solves the same problem: "here's 20 grand, stop complaining about the smell"
That causes even more problems. If you do give out 20k they'll want it every year.
This is quite frankly the best video on this topic thats ever been done! Thank you for the education on this topic.
Love the Halfwheel reviews and the video series on humidors is great. This was a great topic and the attention to detail on the complications of filtrations was outstanding. Thanks Kirby.
Brilliant system you've designed there. I love the overkill factor of it. Allows for plenty of headroom in terms of capability and I can't help but agree with you that it will result in less headache in the long run as the expectation for consumer grade products would be nowhere near that of commercial grade equipment standards.
Your channel is such a breath of fresh air (no pun intended.) Such quality content.
It would be a pleasure to witness how Kirby does a proper "real" HotBox in his office.
I just picture eddie sahakian saying that exact comment to him.
I love smoking outside overlooking my ocean views bro 🙌
Great information for anyone looking for a filtration system. Keep up the great work, its a joy to watch.
Nice work. It's good to see people working with the finest.
Great video. I'm looking to making my Man Cave into a smoke room.
Surely you deserve it (asked he, rhetorically) ?? 😄
So cool Kirby! I am very envious!
Me: having to think twice before ordering extra canes sauce
Kirby:
My dawg really just had a hotbox session!! Kirby you a real ☝🏼 🥂
First the pinstripe suit is just awesome! The question is what was the point of the incredibly loud classical music while showing the ceiling? It seems somewhat ridiculous to talk about how quiet the thing pulls air up, show the ceiling and then in post production adding music that drowns out everything.
How often do you have to replace the filters, and how much does it cost each time you replace them?
The beauty of this system is that the filters and carbon canisters do not need to be replaced for two years. My old system requires the carbon to be switched out almost every 6-9 months at a cost of $600. This is a little more, but less often. Also one of the benefits of the larger, commercial unit.
@@kirbyallison Nice. Thanks for the info.
@@kirbyallison I work in the air filtration industry. Nothing against Camfil (although I’m team synthetic not glass) I’d definitely not purchase spares from them. Their products are good but they are VERY expensive and same spec and performance products are widely available from other manufacturers that will fit your system. It’s a very impressive setup I’ll give you that, nice to see some proper equipment!
So what is your professional recommendation?@@ollie7777
Very cool. The Halfwheel guys are great!
Essentially same principle for a grow room.
Awesome now I know what I need for my in house cigar lounge 💯👌🏾
So air changes per hour are to air filtering, as stitches per inch are to shoes
Although Cigars smell good that thick smoke is just annoying and this seems helpful!
Yeah. Any proper smoking room should filter out as much visible smoke as possible.
Man I'm just out here sitting on a log in the bush next to my house. hahaha I'd love an inside area. That said, the weather and lack of light pollution were I live makes looking up at the stars particularly nice with a cigar in hand.
Kirby certainly knows how to dress like a multi-millionaire. Props! 💯. I really, need to invest in at least one stunning suit for special occasions. AC/DC tee-shirts and cargo shorts are my daily attire. But it feels good to dress up occasionally.
Excellent set up..my rabbit air 3 is over kill for my 180 square foot room. 🤣🤣🤣. In all seriesnes the rabbit air 3 is great..
My home office is the same size, and it connects to our master bedroom with a separating door. In your experience, does your rabbit air do the trick? I'm wondering if I need to remove the interior door and completely seal off my office from the home (I have a secondary entrance directly from my garage). Any input is appreciated.
This is such a low key flex Kirby lmao!!!
I just found your channel, very classy.
Thank you for this amazing content.
Made me fell improve my outfit I wear in my channel.
13:31 this part
You can tell Charlie was enjoying that cigar 😂
Great video. Going to something similar fitted to my home office!
If there is any way for you to duct it in, it makes all the difference in the world.
Great video. I can, however, hear the system running while watching this with headphones.
The fragrance of cigar smoke is the best part
nice you can do that. My wife makes me smokes outside. it gets cold in the winter. i envy you soo much. we do have a green house. sometime use it when it rains.
I wonder if I can find $20,000 behind the sofa? I need something like this! Well done, Kirby!
Wow you actually have a suit I like for more than just how it’s put together- it’s a bolder fashion statement than you usually make
Wide lapel and candy stripe- really nice choice
The only thing I wouldn’t have done is the waist coat, I think it muddies the silhouette
Love your channel, but the price of this is unaffordable for most. Any less expensive options?
Will there be a video of your conversation with the HalfWheel gents?
The thumbnail Kirby 😂
How often do the filters need to be changed? And at what cost?
That’s legend status!!
Awesome system
Ok Kirby is just trolling us with that thumbnail 😂
Congrats, you've managed to build a perfect poisoning chamber!
Are there other benefits (beyond clearing the smoke) with using a system like this?
Clean air? Haha. No, the other primary benefit is that we could duct it in so that it was quiet.
Great clip! Thanks!
I feel like I'm on a trip, I'm tripping 🤣🤣
What about the drapes and furniture
Why filter at all instead of extracting outside?
Your USA accent is turning British sounds good.
Great video!
How much would a noise filter for the wife cost?
She designed a money filter for me years ago. 😆
Very informative and helpful. Where did the make-up air come from? If you exhaust 2000 cfm, then that air has to come from somewhere. What climate is your office building in, too? Curious, as I am in the process of designing a cigar room in my house, and am having to bring in make-up air at 100F, cool it down to 55F then reheat it so I don't overcool the space. That is a special unit, but you didn't have one of those. You used a ductless mini-split, which I also am looking at, but I don't need both. I'd love to read your response. Thanks.
That great. But the smell will be on all your stuff. How you fix that
should you be pumping in fresh air with the same cfm as your exhaust fan?
It would have perhaps been better to have return of purified air delivered at floor level, thus supporting a draft for warm smoke air to rise up to ceiling extraction registers. But it was very quiet Kirby, I suspect quieter than the split-AC unit operating at 75% capacity?
We certainly considered this. Unfortunately, the duct work would have been too complicated for our studio. But if I ever installed this in a house (and I would LOVE to one day), I would definitely return the air at the floor! That would certainly be ideal.
Kirby, you're well spoken, we'll dressed and well educated. But you cigar smoking hobby makes you at least 5x cooler. Stay smokey!
Learned a ton big thx 🤝
Hi Kirby, excellent video as always! I like your lighter, who is the maker? Ty ☺️
You need to have the main HVAC vent within 5ft of the room.
15:23 looks like it was filmed in the 70s because of the hotbox
Jesus Charlie and brooks looked like they were in prison. Hope to see you and the sahakians together with another smoke along soon
How did you get Bobby Lee on set??
Lol Kirby must really really enjoy smoking 😂
One word… Rabbitair. We have 2 that cover 2,000sq.ft yet in a room that is only 750sq.ft. Plus windows open. We get zero smell issues or impurities in the air
I got a £15 desk fan
Works if you don’t have employees…
Or a wife. Lol.
I have a large heated garage for smoking cigars, with big screen, fridge and bourbon cabinet. Love it
This is similar to what the casinos use?
No idea. I bet they are way more industrialized than this.
Hey Kirby! Any way you could help a guy out? I ordered from Montefortuna for the very first time because you suggested them on multiple occasions. When I received my package, one of my boxes was riddled with mold! When I tried reaching out, they will only give me a $10 credit! Could you use your magic and help me out somehow? I love your cigar videos and have been binging them the last few weeks!
Bravo!!
Charlie looks like someone who not only enjoys cigars xD
oof
Bro literally this video is specifically directly towards his wife
Ok, how do you get the smell out of your clothes? That system is amazing.
Use a lazer pointer to display smoke
Ya it would take 1 air change to clear
Congratulations! However, the sheer expense of such a system is surely beyond reasonable to most. appreciate that is highly a contentious assumption....but valid regardless
If one was to go to this extent why even let the smoke reach the celling? Spend whatever it takes to make a positive pressure like a paint booth.
Mike Tyson would be proud of your Hot Boxin ;)
I was just about to write (as a swede)
Contact Camfil
That would be strange of me to write since you both bought one for $20000 and that this video is a year old haha
Thanks for the videos
Have you thought about tin tile for the drop ceiling?
This is special acoustic tile that helps baffle the noise from the warehouse. We also have 6” of insulation on top of it to help further sound proof the studio.
My man!
Kirby - Curious to know why you chose to go the filtration route opposed to the exhaust route? I was recently hanging with Gary Kolsaire at The Tobacco Shop in Ridgewood, NJ who has a Davidoff Lounge. His recommendations were more on the exhaust route for their lounge. My friends are always concerned about preserving the air conditioning, my route has just been for exhaust and running the AC heavier during smoke sessions. But, we've got a new studio space that's 75,000 cu. ft. so I'm looking for new approaches. Also, where did you place the duct vents to the CamCleaner in relation to your smoking position?
And lastly, was there a purpose behind the cigar selections during the Hot Box Session? I noticed only you were smoking a Habana.
If you have a ton of air to pull from, the exhaust route is definitely the easiest route. But you have to have a very large volume of air to pull from. In the case of the studio, we have to keep the door closed during filming, so exhaust wouldn’t work for us.
That said, I did install an exhaust fan to help bring in fresh air after smoking. However, it also vents all of our beautiful A/C.
@@kirbyallison The venting of the AC is always the difficult part of exhausting - and here on the East Coast, it also means venting the heat during the winter!
Thanks for making the video showing us the system and taking the moment to reply!
Brooks and Charlie were smoking cigars from Drew Estate, whose cigars are known for their voluminous smoke output.
I can appreciate good air filtration units but I sure am glad I don't smoke. Cigar smoking was one of the things that cut my grandfather's life short. I will take the longer life and spend the 20k having more fun with my family and friends.
Cigars arent as harmful as people think. I know more old cigar smokers than cigarrete smokers.
How very Gangster of you...
I also enjoy the aroma of a good cigar. But it is definitely a bother when the smoke just sits and accumulates in front of my face.
If a privately owned business had such an effective utility (even restaurants) then why should the law not allow them to have a smoking establishment? (Personally I don't think it's any of the government's business at all).
Or at least something properly firewalled off from non-smoking sections….
Don’t you need an air inlet for the negative pressure to really mean anything?
When the Camfil Camclean filter is running, we really don't need negative air pressure because (1) the room is very well-sealed at the door and (2) the room has an independent, self-contained HVAC system via the mini-split. The air exhaust system is really meant to exchange fresh air overnight. The only limitation of this particular design is that the HVAC does not provide a source for fresh air. This is solved by the air exhaust system.
👍
20k isn't that expensive ... only 20 of Kirby's shirts, or a few pairs of shoes xD
Edit: Misspelling at 9:18 I'm afraid hehe
Definitely ended up a little above budget… for sure.
what kind of lighter ??
Has to be a Dunhill old chap.
Or just put in an HRV/ERV. Dumps the bad air outside and brings in fresh air from outside and recovers 85% of the energy. Almost no maintenance compared to your system.
I wanna smoke my giant ROLLED MARIJUANA CIGARETTES IN THIS ROOM SO BAD!
A 4 inch inline fan and 4 inch carbon filter (the ones used for grow tents) is all you need. Or one of those cheap 50 dollar ozone generators from amazon. Both of those = Odor free
Hot take: Kirby really just bought it so he can chief up without getting nicked.
He'd faint with one hit from a joint
Luckily for the rest of us, the marijuana industry has perfected the art of smell removal on an industrial scale. For less than a grand, you can get a carbon filter the size of your car, along with a ducted fan and ducting, that can purify enough air to run a coal fired power plant in your living room.
Duct Muffler - 10" $96.74
Can-Lite Filter 10in 1500CFM $274.20
Can-Lite Pre-Filter 10 in $19.06
Dust Shroom 10in $172.62
Silver Insulated Duct 10in x 25ft $50.60
Can-Fan Max Fan Pro Series 10 in - 1057 CFM $308.08
weed smoke and cigar/cigarette smoke are completely different bro. if u smoke a cigarette ur hands will be stained with the smell for a day. weed doesnt even stick to ur hands
Doesn’t remove any odors…
@@kirbyallison heh, I can tell you are not familiar with indoor grow operations. Trust me, even one tiny plant is enough to stink up an entire house. The system I laid out could probably give your 20,000 system a run for its money. The can-lite filters are massive activated carbon filters that can handle a large grow room
I don’t how high quality the filtration system is, there is no universe that exists where my wife allows smoking in the house. 🤷🏼♂️
My dad built a room onto his garage just to smoke inside lol
You should have a dress code.
Why don't you just vent it outisde ?
It’s a sealed room so that it doesn’t leak the smoke to the rest of the office. And venting requires a massive amount of fresh air to pull from. Plug the end of a straw with your finger; doesn’t matter how hard you suck, you won’t move any air. Same principle for homes / rooms. Unless you’re pumping in a bunch of fresh air, there is only so much air you can “exhaust” out. The result is that you don’t actually get much air turnover.
Why does everyone always spell quiet like quite?
Yeah. That one missed the QC… relying too much on spellcheck and not enough on actual thinking. Sorry!
@@kirbyallison no problem! Spell check gets me all the time too, esp when I'm typing fast. Love the content!
9:18 Quite? lol
Yeah that mistake slipped through.. Removed it now
Fucking hell fellas could have at least dressed for the occasion hey Kirby…!
🎩🥃
What a man does to his body is his prerogative, but if we can entertain a thought for a moment: if it takes $20k to filter out the air in the entire room, imagine what it will cost to filter out your lungs.
you don't inhale cigar smoke.
