  • Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension and anginal chest pain. It acts to inhibit or “block” the voltage-gated L-type calcium channels, reducing vasoconstriction and promoting vasodilation to lower blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, amlodipine can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

My doctor gave me a prescription for amlodipine besylate 5 mg. for very high blood pressure. After taking it for 3 weeks I started getting very dizzy and faint. I tried taking only half of the pill and this helped. My doctor has recently also put me on a Plavix generic pill, Clopidogrel 75 mg. because I recently had 2 strokes. So far it seems to be helping.
Thank you for explaining all the side effects so clearly for amlodipine. I appreciate that. 🙋🙂

Also drink at least 2 cups of hawthorne tea a day, good heart benefits there as well. Your diet and exercise regimen is very important, and also finding a doctor that is on board to wean you off the BP medication is also important. Research foods that lower blood pressure. Please consult with a good doctor that is on the same page as you, that way he can monitor your progress. Your doctor will make decisions based on your medical history.
Making lifestyle changes that can benefit your health are not easy to do, but once you develop a routine and then start to see the positive results, you will know that your relentless pursuit is definitely worth the effort.
Best wishes for a healthy and happy life.

I have been on Amlodipine for some years now and noticed I get a lot of in swelling my legs and feet, some nights I can literally feel a sensation of liquid running down my legs but only in the evening while sitting at my pc, my wife has recently been prescribed Amlodipine she too has noticed swollen legs, I did mention my swelling legs to my doctor and was told to just elevate my legs, after seeing this I'm going to ask for a second opinion, thanks.

After discontinuing Amlodipine, which shutdown my gut, I lost 50 pounds in six months. I went from 3-5 movements a month back to daily bowel movements.

@@mrsnet6654 My gut has always been active at night I can feel it and sometimes hear it. Once I started Amlodipine that activity stopped and there was no morning bowel movement. I started to gain weight, but I never thought it was the drug. I could not find anything on the Internet and my doctor said he had never heard of constipation related to the drug. One day a new doctor switched me to a different drug. Within a couple of weeks I was back to normal and started to lose weight without any fasting or exercise. None of the doctors that I've discussed this with have ever heard of this kind of side-effect, but the change was fast and dramatic. I am retired and a creature of habit, so my routines are remarkably uniform. I noticed itching and occasional dizziness, but none of the other issues that you mentioned. I may be unusual, but losing 50 pounds when you are struggling with hypertension is significant.

I took it for about 2 months back in 21 and 22, was put on it in November of 21 and stopped in January of 22, boy, the side effects were awful. Muscle weakness, extreme fatigue, palpitations, labored breathing, lower back pain which I still have intermittently. Talk about two months of fuckin hell. God it was awful. Not to mention, my bp went way too low with it at one point being 80/40 and the dizziness, god, I can’t wish that on my worst enemies it’s that bad.

Oops! I have bathroom hurry every morning, less urgent as the day goes on and average 7 poos daily. I thought it was caused by my food intolerance and too much fibre. I'm lucky I'm retired now because I wouldn't have been able to travel to work on a bus and work 4 hr shifts until allowed a break! I am concerned that my Dr wants me to take Amlodipine and is also pushing me to have a daily statin as well (but I prefer healthy lifestyle and supplements instead of all these lactose based big pharma meds.

Was on Proprananol and Amlodipine for 2 weeks …. Constipation so bad that my wife was packing an overnight bag for me and about to phone for an ambulance. I had taken 8 laxative tablets by 2pm and fortunately they slowly started to work. Anxiety through the roof and aggressive in attitude… no sex drive..and could only fall to sleep at about 3am, waking every 90 mins and raiding the fridge …. !! Wtf is all that about. I was irate with my Dr and said I would rather take my chances than take anymore of that! …. My blood pressure results were normal … when tested 2 weeks after stopping the drug

My husband had side effects with Amlodipine, went on to Linsinopril. Both had warnings about taking with grapefruit. So I did some research as is you take these drugs with grapefruit, blood pressure can go too low. So why take toxic drugs? My husband and I worked together with his nurse to wean my husband off of this drug. We did it my using Morton’s LITE Salt (potassium/chloride vs. sodium/chloride). We do not use much but it does give a salty taste without raising BP. I cook beets for my husband as beets are known to decrease blood pressure naturally. Grapefruit does control blood pressure also. grapefruit juice is also good. We found that buying Del Monte Grapefruit prepared in a jar and sold at larger Walmarts in their produce sections in refrigerated cases, is both delicious and convenient.
So is it better to have lower blood pressure with natural foods? We think so.
Many blood pressure meds are derived from snake venom or mimic the chemical structure of snake venom. It is better to not eat foods which raise blood pressure. So we are Vegan. My husband already had cancer, I don’t want him to be sick, so he has lost weight as well as me by eating a whole Food Plant-Based diet.
    Think about it.
