What an incredibly informative video! I just love the way you describe things. I've been using the 16-80 f/4 since it came out as I travel quite often but recently dropped it and it needs repairing. I'm seriously considering replacing it with this. Just need to decide if I want to trade the minor difference in focal length for a constant f/2.8.

I got this lens recently and it's an absolute dream. I do a lot of low light event photography, and this has been perfect. I love the constant 2.8 aperture. I've also been traveling with it paired with the XT4 and the weight has been just fine for walking around with it for hours.

Looking at this as a weather sealed alternative to my 18-55mm. All the other options either have a smaller aperture or no OIS. This ticks all the boxes for aperture, OIS, and weather sealing. The only thing holding me back is the size, but I think I'll eventually end up picking it up.

I purchased this lens 2 weeks ago for a trip to st.thomas.. unfortunately some of my vacation was spent inside due to hurricane Fiona, but I did get a decent amount of time with it for video and photos. I was very happy with the af in video and stills ... tracking was always on point. I was honestly surprised how good this lens was over all. The IS paired with inbody on the xt4 left me with really nice tac sharp hand held night images. Image wise my only mehh feelings come from its natural color. Shooting jpg, I just felt color was very muted. Only real dislike is lack of aperture ring. Thank you to tamron for this little best of a lens.

Thanks for the review. I own the Fuji 16-80mm and it is a great lens. Mine is very sharp and contrasty and I'm not experiencing the issues that you had with it. Other than an extra f stop, I don't see any real advantage to the Tamron at that price. Now the bargains are with the Sigma Fuji mount lenses because they run about half the price of the Fuji. I picked up a Sigma 56mm 1.4 last week and it out performs the Fuji 56 1.2 I got rid of last year in almost all areas. Tamron could do better on that price if they want to be more competitive.

Before switching from Nikon FF to Fujifilm two years ago, my Nikon kit included the holy trinity in the Tamron V2 series (which this has the look of). I had compared them to the Nikon counterparts prior to purchase and in most cases, the Tamrons were either just as good, and in some cases even better than the top-of-the line Nikkors. To my eye at least, just my opinion. 30 years ago I started my photography journey by buying what I could afford, meaning cheap glass. I had some Sigmas, Tamrons and Tokinas. I couldn't get out of them fast enough, they were just never as good as Nikkors. So it took something special to change my mind all those years later, and I think Tamron knocked it out of the park. Haven't tried Tamron for Fujifilm yet, but I would have a go, no hesitation.

the new 18-120 interests me, and is a similar price in the UK as the Tamron (the 16-80 is a little cheaper, although out of stock).
I also wish all manufactures put T stops on lenses or at least made it easier to find them as not all F/2.8 or F/4 lenses are the same for light gathering especially now, a lot of photographers are hybrid photo/video shooters and being able to swap a T 2.8 lens for a different T2.8 lens makes video life a lot easier etc

Sharpness can be better judged if the the image shows the same for every focal length. I. e. go near for wide angle and far for tele.
It would be interesting how it compares to the Fuji 16-55/2.8.

I have just seen this excellent and very practical video.
Am an owner of the XT20, XT20 and XS10.
Purchased an 18-135 Fuji as an all round lens.
The 16-55 2.8 is really too limited in its focal range, for me, maybe not others?
Also, it's too heavy and expensive for travel type needs.
When this new Tamron lens in the Fuji mount is reviewed, no mention is even made of the 18-135 zoom. Will immediately be checking to see if it's still in production after putting up this post.
The 18-60 has not been all that well reviewed, and not only because of the fixed f4.
The new Tamron seems to have put a real cat among the pigeons so far as Fuji's mid range zooms are concerned.
As an owner of the 18-135, tbh, have been sufficiently happy with it's performance not to immediately sell in favour of the Tamron. Also own a range of Fuji primes and the truly excellent Sigma 56 1.4.
Tamron has really mounted a direct a value for money ass

Great lens. I had this on my A6700. Now I have it on my X-H2. Yes it has a few focus fails & doesn’t handle zooming with video but that’s because Fuji doesn’t have the Sony focusing system. Overall the results are fantastic. Not bothered about raperture rings, got used to that when I moved from film to digital. That shouldn’t hold you back.

I’ve got the Tamron 18-300 for my X-T4 and my one criticism (versus my Fujinon lenses- the 16-80 and the 10-24WR) is that it misses focus sometimes. I generally shoot buildings or other static subjects so it’s nothing to do with face/eye detection or focus tracking. It doesn’t put me off using the 18-300, but I know to check every shot for focus straight after, and sometimes I need to re-take.
Of course the 17-70 might be different.

I had, and sold, my Tamron 18-300 (I'm also using an X-T4) for the same reason. I was having a lot of trouble with the focus being unreliable. I have other Tamron lenses and love them, so I'm hopeful this was just a one off. It could have been the perfect lens!

Did you return the lens to Tamron under warranty stating your issues? I don't have or really want that lens, however it has been universally highly reviewed and I have not seen any real world users, as opposed to reviewers, do anything but praise the lens.
Could you have received a poor unit?

      @d0gwalker Před rokem

@@robertcudlipp3426 That's a good question, but I'm not sure one way or the other. Most of the time it's fine - and when it does miss focus it's not so bad or so frequent that it seems like a technical fault. More like an annoying idiosyncrasy that I put down to the third party lens protocols not always playing nicely. But maybe I'm wrong. Too late to return it now - and sadly it doesn't have a USB-C port for firmware updates, unlike a handful of other Tamron zooms.

Do you have a review of the Fuji 16-80? Which focus issues did you had that you had to return the lens? I was considering that one or this Tamron and I'm curious to know.

Now I'm not sure. This one, or the 16-80 f4? I used that last one on a friends X-T5, and I loved it (except for soft corners when approaching 80).

Looks like a good lens but I found with the Tamron 18-300 that i had to disable the AF+MF as the manual focus ring gets bumped when cradeling the lens in the left hand too easily

Been waiting for you to review this lens.....would this be better for video than the xf16-80 fuji lens. How does it compare outside of build quality.
I am torn between this and the XF16-80.
The f2.8 17-70, and speed is very appealing for Tamron. I have the Viltrox 13mm 1.4, but now I need a longer focal range. It seems like the focus breathing is still apparent in the fuji 16-80 from the last B&H review.......leaning towards Tamro, but Viltrox has a new Fuji 75mm 1.2 pro lens coming.

Great video! I have an x-t5, and i want to buy the 16-55 2.8.. But some people are saying im internet that they are having bad experiences with the 16-55 2.8 and the new sensor, because this lense cannot resolve well the 40 mpx? What is your experience? Do you see any difference in sharpness and overall image quality between 26 mpx and your X-T5 (40 mpx)? Thanks!

It would have been interesting to compare this Tamron with its E-mount sibling plus an adaptor ring. It's a pity there is no Fringer Pro adaptor for Sony E-mount. Around here it would have been the same price as the Tamron Fujifilm version and you would have got an aperture ring. :D
The lack of an aperture ring bothers me the most. Maybe I need to try other systems as well to find out if I would really miss it that much. Right now I wouldn't want to miss it.

Hello Chris. Great video and review as always. I am considering this lens to my second hand X-T3 which I bought today. I have also one specific question regarding the X-T3. After buying this camera I checked the firmware version and I can see that it hasn't been updated since 3.10 or 3.20 version. Should I update firmware with each released version separately (one after another) or I should just install the latest update and all previously released will be instaled automatically? I will be grateful for help as I don't want to mess anything with the firmware. Thanks in advance

AFAIK Firmware upgrade replaces the firmware in it's entirety. The really should not point in upgrading though each version.
Just upgrade to the latest version directly.

I’m in love with 16-80. I have 18mm, 35, 56mm primes (apart from 13mm and 85mm Viltrox) and nothing can substitute my Fuji 16-80mm. Give it a new try!

    • @mortenthorpe

Hmm… the 16-80 is my least used lens… but maybe that has a few reasons… 1. I shoot either super long, or super wide, and the 16-80 is not the best for either case… the SamYang 12 mm is fantastic, and so is their 135 mm f2… if you can afford a GFX, then the Laowa 17 mm f4 is very nice! The gf 32-64 is phenomenal! The XF 50-140 2.8 is also super nice, and quickly becoming a fixture on my x-t3, while the 100-400 is hanging off the x-h2s, with the awesome new autofocus!
