  • I Review a 2023 Ford F150 with the 5.0L Coyote V8 and test the fuel economy and MPG. Ford says this truck and Engine will get 22mpg on the highway and I wanted to see if that was true. I also explain some mechanical reasons and differences why this 5L engine could be efficient
    What I Use:
    Engine Oil - amzn.to/3sVnAoX
    Engine Oil Filter - amzn.to/44Vk3nG
    Engine Air Filter - amzn.to/3JMmMVV
    Cabin Air Filter - amzn.to/3JMZAHh
    Gear Oil - amzn.to/3PoIcxa
    Penetrating fluid - amzn.to/3EOclkx
    Rust protection - amzn.to/3Zo0Rh6
    Towing Gear:
    10 ton Pintle hitch (2.5" receiver) - amzn.to/3r7Axvm
    7 Ton Adjustable hitch (2" receiver) - amzn.to/46i2iAf
Adjustable Pintle hitch mount (2.5" receiver) - amzn.to/3RqHGS3
    15 Ton Pintle hitch - amzn.to/45SaCqv
    10,000lbs Tie Down Straps - amzn.to/3ZBnxeh
    My Camera Gear:
    Go Pro Hero 10 - amzn.to/3ObZdJJ
    Go Pro Hero 8 - amzn.to/36grzkM
    Go Pro Accessories - amzn.to/3JLhlXo
    Sony A6400 - amzn.to/3vkqzob
I hope everyone had a good week. Last week I talked about how I really liked this engine option and I wanted to truly test out this truck for its fuel economy.
The first thing that helps this engine with economy is the cam phasers advancing the engine timing. this help the engine burn less fuel and become more efficient.
the second thing that helps this 5L become efficient is the cylinder-deactivation which I explained and am not a fan of.
the third thing that really helps this engine is the smaller size. less displacement means less air to be met with fuel and that is critical for fuel economy.
lastly is the driveline. this truck comes with a 10 speed and 3.31 gears all of which are highly advantageous for fuel economy.

These pickup powertrain videos you’ve been doing have been great. Interesting to see how the various brands and powertrain options stack up in towing, economy, etc.
I’ve heard good things about the 5.0 from owners of f150s. Had we not purchased our 21 with the 3.0L diesel, the v8 probably would have been a contender. The last truck was a 5.7L Ram which we loved, but it was THIRSTY! The type of driving we do (daily driver) lends itself well to the diesel, so it’s been a great fit for us…..and totally trouble free for 36k miles so far (knock on wood).
    Keep up the great vids!

What sort of daily driving do you do with the 3.0L diesel? More in town or highway and what sort of distance? I've played with the idea of jumping to one of the F150s with that engine, or the GM I6 Duramax, or the Ram EcoDiesel but I'm not sure if I need it lol

    • @chriss526
      @chriss526 Před 8 měsíci +2

@@mrdyxi88 Mixed driving (probably a bit more city than highway), I generally get 20-22 mpg pretty regularly. All highway, easily 28+ mpg. On a vacation trip from IN to NC and back a couple summers ago, we got 30mpg (cruise set to 75mph).
I daily drive the truck mainly because we have a 4500 LB camper that we tow several times a year. It pulls that camper effortlessly. Towing the camper is usually around 10-13mpg depending on wind, how fast we are going, etc.
This truck has been great. Love it. Understand though hat the higher price of diesel offsets some of the mpg benefits. Compared to driving a 2.7L or the 5.0L, am I saving money? It’s probably a wash. But part of having the diesel for me is the driving experience….lots of torque. And also the “unicorn” factor. I rarely see a 3.0 diesel around here.

Good stuff, as always. My 2022 5.0 with 3.73 does seem to get worse MPG, at 75 mph it indicates 1900 RPM in 10th. As you mentioned, a towing ratio is going to have an impact, and with the max tow package, my experience seems to prove your case. Getty is biased towards the 5.0. When doing mpg tests with the 3.5 and 2.7 ,and on the same exact roads, he complains about the mpg not “being that good”- not getting what the epa said it would.
Now here with the v8 it’s just not a big deal that it got much less than the epa said it would , even with an 3:31 gear, and whines about the road inclines and breezes. In reality the v8 doesn’t really do all that well. Go figure

All 3rd generation and newer Coyotes use a 93 mm bore with 12:1 compression to make them a true 5.0 at 5.035 Liters. The 1st and 2nd generation Coyotes used a 92.2 mm bore with 11:1 compression to make them a 4.951 litter, or "false 5.0". All generation Coyotes use the same 92.7 mm stroke, theoretically you can bore the older generation Coyotes and convert them into a 3rd or 4th gen engine. You can get the same 12:1 compression with just stock parts. Most of the parts are interchangeable. You can install the 4th generation dual throttle body intake on the 1st gen Coyote if you wanted to. You can also just swap the 1st gen heads on the 4th gen block to get rid of the cam phasers and cylinder deactivation. Plus you gain an oil pressure sensor instead of a basic "low oil pressure switch". Coyotes are incredibly cool engines to modify and boost.

Tacoma (really any Toyota truck) sucks for fuel economy. My 2015 4.0 Tacoma averages 15-16mpg mostly city. Granted it’s lifted and bigger tires, but it’s bad. Before that I had a 2012 F150 5.0 and I believe I averaged 17mpg with the same driving. I got the Tacoma for off-road adventures, but it’s time for a 1/2 ton at this point in my life. I wanted a tundra, but I’m heavily leaning towards the F150. I’m balancing the powertrains and mostly between the 5.0 and the Powerboost. FIL has a PB and it’s been phenomenal for him.

I have heard of plenty of cam phaser issues with the old 5.4, and with the 3.5 eco, but never the 5.0 coyote. If I were to get one, I would get a tune to turn off the cylinder deactivation. US government regs really make things more expensive, and needlessly complicated. Would love to see you test a 3.73 equipped truck.

    • @JROC734
      @JROC734 Před 8 měsíci +3

The 3.73's are awesome, especially if you tow with your Coyote. If you want a Coyote with a 9.75" rearend instead of the "super" 8.8" rearend (basically a 8.8" with a 12 bolt cover instead of the traditional 10 bolt cover) you have to get it with the 3.73's. I've heard that if you get a coyote truck that's crewcab with the 6.5' bed or maybe an extended cab with the 8' bed that you can get a 9.75 with either a 3.31 or 3.55, but don't quote me on that. With a 275/55-20 (32" tire) my 18 5L FX4 cruise on the highway at the exact speed that every M6 Camaro I've ever owned does. Basically at 80 MPH I'm turning right at 2,000 RPM going down the highway, which is easy going for a Coyote. The 1 MPG less rating that the 3.73 trucks get when compared to the 3.31 and 3.55 truck might be because of the gearing, but it might also be that a 9.75" is just a heavier/beefier rearend to have to turn than a 8.8". Makes you wonder why Ford offers anything but a 3.73 in these trucks. Hell in 19 GM went to a 33" 275/60-20 for their 20" wheels, and Ford followed suit in 21. The 1" tall tire should drop the RPM a little at any given speed, in any given gear.

I generally hate cylinder deactivation, but Ford seems to have gotten it right. They've been out for over 3 years, and have not been a reliability issue for Ford. Changing your oil every 3,500-4,000 miles with good oil will go a long way to keeping the cylinder deactivation (very important for GM owners. Change your oil frequently with DEXOS2 rated oil if you want your lifters to stay happy, and your intake valves clean) and cam phasers working reliably. I don't care if it's rated for 10K+ miles, going off the old narrative of oil changes every 3K miles is a good way to help these modern engines stay reliable. Look at Beefcafes blown 2022 5L truck is averaging 16.7 MPG on E85, and making well north of 700 WHP. My 18 5L on E85 that's tune only gets about 12.7 MPG, and I might average 16.7 on 93 octane. A supercharged 1/2 ton that runs well in the 10's, and averages nearly 17 MPG on E85 is damn impressive. People with stock 21+ 5L trucks are getting MPG's that rival the 2.7L Egoboost trucks. It seems like at least with the Coyote that cylinder deactivation has definite MPG benefits. If it's reliable then I have no issues with cylinder deactivation.

My 2020 5.0L F-150 4WD will get around 19.0-19.5 mpg if one keeps the speed at 65 mph or less. Drive over 65 mph, and the mpg will drop to 16.5-18.0. Like you, I dislike cylinder deactivation and I bought the used 2020 F-150 without cylinder deactivation and not a new '21 or '22 with it. Friends of mine who own the 3.5L Ecoboost have universally have had reliability and longevity issues, despite my friends being rigorous about maintaining their engines properly. My '20 5.0L had some oil consumption issues until the TSB addressing that issue was done--since then its oil consumption is around 1/2 quart per 4K-5K miles. Also, the EVIC out of the factory is over optimistic on fuel economy--the good news is that it can be adjusted by the user to reflect actual fuel economy. Mine is now dead-on accurate compared with hand-calculated fuel economy figures.

A lot of folks (including me) who luckily aren’t having shifting issues nevertheless end up with a transmission that makes a noticeable whine noise. Ford says that is is due to straight cut gears and that a “small amount” of whine is normal for the transmission and doesn’t impact longevity. I’m doubtful. What do you think?

My 2022 fMPG (Ford MPG) is always 1ish MPG optimistic. That said, also have a toyota and it's the same. To move the f150 brick at 70mph is a big hit to potential peak MPG. Slowing down and not running on the interstate can added 10-30percent to MPG. If you do a test run at 50-55mph, you can notice the difference. I also think the cylinder deactivation adds to MPG at slower speeds and low torque situations. Worst case for this truck is stop/start as the 4.5-5.0K mass takes a great deal of fuel to accelerate.

I’m not a expert but I’m thinking the 5.0 probably sucks more air than the 6.2. DOHC + 4 valves per cylinder plus more revs. The more air you can get in and out as well as how fast you can do it is a big determining factor into how much power you can make hence the reason the coyote makes power similar to its larger competition. I’m sure you know but the coyote doesn’t have lifters like a pushrod engine so however they achieved their cylinder deactivation should be very different from the others.
Hopefully it holds up long term! I haven’t heard of any having issues yet

1-2% increase in economy is actually impressive. When the manufacturers and the EPA talk about economy increases, they are talking about the emissions and operating efficiency of the entire fleet or line up of vehicles. MPG is always a side product of efficiency. Ford sells on average around 650,000 F150s per year. The 1-2% increase may only equate to 0.5 mpg if going from 21.5 to 22 mpg. However, when multiplied by 650,000 trucks, that can mean 325,000 gallons saved with just 1 gallon used. The average consumer drives 15,000 miles per year. If, theoretically, they all got 22 mpg instead of 21.5 mpg, that would save 5,151,250 gallons per year if they all drove 15,000 miles. The EPA states an average of 8,887 grams of co2 is emitted into the atmosphere per gallon of fuel burned. That would mean Ford would save 50,463 tons of co2 per year with they saved just 1-2% mpg on their F150. This is another example of a small change creating a butterfly effect that creates a huge positive impact to air quality.
