PEANUTS IN A NUTSHELL: More Times Adult Voices Were Heard In Charlie Brown Cartoons!

- If you watch enough Charlie Brown specials, you learn the rules pretty quick: Snoopy only communicates through non-verbal vocalizations, you never see adults, and when adults are present, you only hear them as a muted trombone.
Except that each of those rules has been broken several times. A while back I brought you a handful of occasions where you saw and heard adults, and where Snoopy’s thought balloons were given a voice in animation. That video got a huge response (no doubt spurred on by being released the day before Charles Schulz’s 100th birthday), and you clued me in to many, many more times those rules were broken.
So many, in fact, that I’m following up on each one individually. This time we’re looking at more times adult voices were heard in Peanuts cartoons. From teachers, to nurses, to sports announcers and umpires, here are all the times I could find.
And: wanna win some Peanuts swag? Watch the video for details on how to enter. Winners will be chosen on March 14, 2024.

I love how you got children to voice the comments that appear throughout the video! It absolutely gives it a genuine Peanuts vibe alongside the jazz music you briefly discussed!
I’m already looking forward to your next Peanuts video. The first essay you did on the franchise, as well as your videos on both Rankin/Bass and Star Wars are all so excellent, and I’ve rewatched them too many times to count.
Thank you! I thought the kids' performances really made it. The script for this video came from a much longer draft that covered **everything** the comments on the original video brought up. Trouble is, that would have made the video, conservatively, three hours long. But on the upside, a lot of the material for the new few videos is already written!
Great video! I used to watch It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown over and over and over and over and over and over and over when I was a kid, even when it was not Easter!😂 I was obsessed with Snoopy back then. I feel like I am vicariously reliving my childhood through your videos. Thank you!
There's a lot of great Snoopy stuff in that one! Plus Woodstock's groovy birdchelor pad!
Well done! More needs to be done to remind people of the genius of Charles Schulz and Peanuts. Last weekend, I pulled out the DVD for Snoopy Come Home -- my daughter had seen it but my son never did. The debut of Woodstock! I don't like that the specials are locked up by Apple+ -- it just decreases the availability for children to see these classics. And as my 1st grade teacher would say, "Wah, wah wah wah wah wah!"
I do what I can to carry the torch! It's nice that Apple has made so many of the specials available...not so much that it's only to Apple subscribers. Sometime I'll have to get into my fantasies of a complete blu-ray box set, in the shape of the doghouse (you remove the roof to reveal the disc cases inside), with *every* special, even YITS, with commentaries on each one from people like Jean Schulz, the various Schulz children (I'd love to hear Amy talk about her skating being used as reference for "She's A Good Skate), Peanuts historians, and what the heck, I could go on and talk about some of them...
Fantasssstic! So cool and fun...I love the part where Schroeder holds his ideals up and refuses to rock out! classic! Great job, Mr. Bowen. I'm glad our trio were able to provide some groovy music for this. xoxo
It was the perfect accompaniment - thanks again! And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one supporting Schroeder for maintaining his integrity!
Fantastic job, Rich! Adding the kids was a wonderful choice and they all rocked it. Very cool to shout out the musicians and call attention to their sites. Loved the episode.
Thanks! And thanks for helping me connect with some of the kids and their parents. For those who don't know, Dan is the director of The Cookie Crumbles, the horror short I edited in 2022: czcams.com/video/UEODOdr5bKc/video.htmlsi=dc0wrfAr6pM65I22
I'd like to see all the Peanuts commercials. That would be like a trip back into time.
There are some fantastic compilations on CZcams. Search "peanuts commercials" and you'll find them. I had NO idea the Metlife commercials went on so long!
It would be cool to see you talk about Peanuts lost/found media such as the 1960’s integrated sponsor tags and the original 1965 version of A Charlie Brown Christmas
I've been delving into that in my research! I got the 65 version of ACBC thanks to the Internet Archive, and it figures prominently into the discussion of Snoopy "speaking..."
Good to have you back! Checked in a week or 2 ago for new content I may have missed
Thanks! Sorry it took so long - between reading all those strips, and trying at first to do a followup that covered all three rules PLUS the extra ones, I got a little behind.
A great follow-up video that was thoughtfully curated and worth the wait. I don’t think I ever realized just how much Peanuts content there is out there to sift through. Bravo for the effort!
Thank you! One of the pleasures was, like I talked about, how each new bit of knowledge would open up *new* things to learn about. I read up on Bill Melendez, I learn about Bill Littlejohn, the artist who singlehandedly animated Snoopy's best moments. Wrestling with the lawn chair? That was Littlejohn. The Masked Marvel arm-wrestling Lucy? Littlejohn. We're gonna get into him. Or other singular personalities like Vince Guaraldi, the composer of most of the classic music. Or getting curious about who actually *played* the trombone, which led me to this amazing thread: trombonechat.com/viewtopic.php?t=7369
Your videos are so good! I can't wait for those videos on Franklin and The Little Red-Haired Girl. As a matter of fact, in "It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown", The Little Red-Haired Girl's name is revealed to be Heather, and in " The Peanuts Movie", her full name is Heather Wold, as revealed on the test scores list.
That's true! But...it's also complicated. Better than anything, the Little Red-Haired Girl illustrates how the strip and the cartoons could be very different entities. Well, It's The Pied Piper, Charlie Brown illustrates that too, but not in a good way... 😅
Great video, and I can't wait for the sequels! I assume showing coloured photos of the child narrators during the end credits is an intentional reference to the end credit sequences of A Boy Named Charlie Brown, Snoopy Come Home and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (even though they actually show all other crew members except the voice actors). I guess the phrase "Graphic Blandishment" at 27:23 is a Melendez reference too. If so, I loved that little touch.
Thank you! And well-spotted - until I was assembling this video I would have sworn on my life that they presented the kids that way in at least one of the movies. Even though my memory was playing tricks on me, I still thought it would be the perfect way to present the real stars of this video.
Also nice to meet someone who appreciates some Graphic Blandishment!
You’re in the Super Bowl, Charlie Brown is my favorite of the bunch.
I can honestly say I've never heard anyone say that before. Please, say more!
16:10 to 16:34. Linus finally puts Lucy in her place 😁😂🤣
Right? Linus is on point in that one - and note that he doesn't have his blanket in that special...
Yaay!! Love my boy in this! And he is only 4
He did a fantastic job!
Fascinating! Great editing & I can't wait to see the rest. 👏👏👏
Thanks! More on the way!
You're alive!!!!
Also, I'm 1000% not going to win but I'm down to try
Ha! I wrote a *really* long first draft, then had to cut it down to what you see here. Plus, y'know, reading all those comics...
Love your videos! Glad too see a new one!
Thanks! There are more on the way!
Great video! Thanks so much for doing all this research and sharing it!
Thank you! I appreciate all the images you've provided - plus, I just love seeing the amazing stuff you find!
Great to see you again!
Glad to be back!
I always wondered why Marlon Brando pronounced Krypton as Krip tin.
Honestly, I think that was about the time he ran out of F's to give. Legend has it he would have his lines written on cue cards just off camera, and allegedly asked in Jor-El could be a bagel, and Brando just do the voice.
Thanks for thinking of us, but these days I wouldn't touch twitter with a 10 foot pole. So I'm going to drop a link on Tumblr instead.
Hmm...I'll allow it, but I don't have a Tumblr. Can you send me a screenshot of your Tumblr post on Facebook? I'll make sure you get entered.
@@cynicaladult Nah man, it's all good. I'm sharing because I think it's worth it for other people to see, not to get a contest entry (also I try to avoid Facebook almost as much as Twitter). But again thanks for having the contest in the first place, It's really neat that people can get some well loved vintage memorabilia.
Good news - you're a winner! What's the best way to get hold of you?
@@cynicaladultI just followed you and sent you a DM on your Insta. (Also, I was just this close to flagging this as spam out of reflex, but according to YT, you're actually you.)
