Wreck of the RARITAN off Cape Fear, North Carolina

Footage of the laker RARITAN, which ran aground on Frying Pan Shoals in February 1942. Originally built as the LAKE FAIRTON in 1919 by the Detroit Shipbuilding Company at Wyandotte, Michigan, the vessel was later converted into the dredge DETROIT WAYNE. Finally rebuilt in 1940 as a cargo vessel, the RARITAN , the would operate for less than two years before coming to grief on the treacherous shoals off Cape Fear.
