I agree pretty much with your take on the movie, but I highly disagree about the Oshii's book. Yes, I read it. I think it is a pretty bittersweet work, I see its narrative "problems" as mostly intentional, all of them, its anticlimactic ending, its pointless narrative, the absence of Saya. In my perspective all of this was Oshii saying that the real story, the one you saw on the movie, it's not what you're gonna get, the big narrative, the close to mythological story that is happening is not yours, this, added to the fact that the main character is a revolutionary, is conveying a kind of deep message about hopelessness and the inability of changing things. At least this was my take on it. But it's good to notice that I'm the biggest Oshii bitch out there, so this could be making my view not the most impartial

I like your interpretation of the novel!
I want to add some facts about the book that people should have in mind: Oshii wrote the book because he saw story problems with the script of the movie. He asked them to be changed but that didn't happen, so he created his own version of the story and Blood-mythos. Furthermore the book has biographical influence. Oshii names characters that are portraying him "Rei" (the protagonist in Talking Head is also named that) and portrays things in the book he saw when he was part of the student protests in Japan.
I think all this sheds a new light at the intentions of the book and what maybe some of his reasons are.

hey, Kor. I came here from your Azuki-chan video. I love your detailed breakdown of my childhood anime from back in the day.
there's another underappreciated anime that I think you might want to have a look at.
"Idaten Jump", basically an MTB-themed sports-Isekai from 2005. It was very popular in Indonesia, India, and the Middle East.
It's just too bad it didn't get the recognition it deserves. the music tracks in it are just complete banger.

hey if you wanna watch another of the iterations of the franchise and have it be decent, watch the 2005 one, NOT the 2012 one with CLAMP, that's the evil cousin
the 2005 one is NOT perfect and is also kinda silly in some ways, but it is pretty entertaining and respects a lot of the attractive points of the movie

Man I didn't want to be this harsh but...constantly jumping the zoom level on your face was as an unnecessary an effort as reading the book sequel to this now obscure film. At least for the later it had some comedy value in how bad the book was, for the zoom jumping it was just distracting as hell.
I like the idea of covering more films.
