ENA's visual identity is so strong that half the reason this video leaves an impression and is enjoyable to watch is merely its use of footage from the series. I can't get over the design of ENA herself in particular.

This is the perfect place to put my latest spontaneous observation about her design, the thing that might be the secret key to why she's so cute - Her face is like the most extremely simplified representation possible of what gives Drew Barrymore's face it's incredibly specific appeal: A mouth that's always subtly skewed off to one side and one eye that's a little bit squintier than the other. It's like a hyper-primitive portrait of her.
i actually found ena with animation memes, i thought she was an original character but turns out it's a animation series, i really really REALLY love her design and hope to make something like it!! One day..

i remember watching Auction Day in June of 2020. It only had maybe about 100K views, and it was very confusing to me and I gave it no thought. So when recently it began to pick up popularity, i decided to rewatch it again and man...Its now my hyperfixation

i don't think there's any game ive not had that issue with whatsoever, old or new, but particularly the games that posses the aesthetic qualities i find the most interesting in games are most often the /most/ tedious

hey guess what? this is actually based off a game Joel G. made to my basic understanding, the game's called somnium if you wanna check it out. it was really fun, but also really short it took like 20 minutes to beat

I have theory that when new content draws extremely heavily on intense nostalgia for arcane elements of an era when the viewer was already an adult, it elicits a very specific kind of irritation, like the whole aesthetic is one of a thing that says, "You are entirely too old to understand this completely intuitive, basic emotion shared by a number of young people you can't possibly comprehend a justification for. That is literally how fucking old you are."

It's like the series was born out of love for internet culture.

Great video Kor! I'm so happy ENA is getting all the appreciation it deserves now. When I found ENA for the first time a few months ago I rewatched Extinction Party over and over it appealed to me aesthetically in a way no other animated series had before. AHHHHH I love it so much

Fun fact actually ENA is gameplay according to joel g he "uses Blender and the final project is made in Unity, I do a gameplay of all you have seen and record it"
The first time I watched Ena I fully doubted i actually watched it. It’s qualities matched that of my dreams. And the unexplainable awe, nostalgia, and confusion I get from viewing it, still makes me doubt how the living essence of a dream is possible to exist. But then here there is this video talking about the wonders I claim as recorded dreams.

honestly ENA is the best animation that i've watched so far, even if i lived for 13 years. it gives out a webcore, internetcore or dreamcore aesthetic which i really like, the designs are amazing and i'd never do such amazing designs, and the community is not toxic too which im happy about. i am waiting for more episodes everyday hoping that ENA will have a full series on other apps like netflix.
Been there when the animation called Action day was the only Ena animation so far, never thought Ena would of been as popular as she is now

Just a comment for a correction on something, ENA isn't actually over! Joel is still planning on making more ENA animations and he is planning to have the next trailer out for one of them by the end of this month or next month I believe.

Joel G actually rendered the world of ENA on unity, a game creating app! Which definitely helps to add to the game like charm!
It's interesting that you brought up the environment being reminiscent of video games, because the environment itself was made in a game engine.

But ENA as a series is how I feel when tired. I have intense mood swings, feel like the world is distant and crumbling into madness chaos and nonsense, and generally just feel…insane.

Banger video! You explained almost everything that made me love the series, how it pulls inspiration from distant, almost un-related artwork and niche (Picasso to 90s vid games and if I can add the use of different cultures and languages) making it a unique blend that works together. The character designs are weird cute, but I especially appreciate the broad variety of inspirations.

Personally, when I first saw ENA I found it so strange and alien I felt... repelled by it. I was scared it'd be some weird-for-the-sake-of-weird kinda stuff. I think I should give it another shot
EDIT: I watched it and tbh, I love it. Feels really nostalgic and I found the abstract weirdness that repulsed me strangely appealing
It is fairly weird-for-the-sake-of-weird, yes. But that's not all.
It still has its patterns and logic, just never at surface level.
It's witchery. You get creeped by it then keep coming back.

I think why it is so interesting because since the artwork is more abstract it can focus on story telling it isn't blogged down by detailed sake. Compared to other indie animations on youtube. Ena has so much diversity and contrasting moments whilst other animations look like you are watching the same thing throughout. I find Ena series comforting because it has made retro CGI to be more appreciated. Some of us may grown up on this type of graphics and have some nostalgia to only find there is no references to this style in todays world. It brings back the feelings you seen from pixel art and early CGI
Beat me to it! I also have a video in the works about the weird mix of contemporary design motifs and surrealist influences of ENA - but it's great to see others pick up on this and talk more about the artistic and visual merit of Joel's work! Smashed that mf sub button ;)

Ena herself is a shining example of waifu material
The series reminds me of the first Spyro game on the PS1 and the intro theme from Eyewitness. Despite their dated visuals and graphics I can't help, but feel sucked in, I even have dreams walking around in that setting.
It's like stepping into another dimension.
