Fantastic seeing 1rm squat back in strongman, hopefully it’s going to become a regular across the big competitions. It’s currently lacking quality a little bit in comparison to how far developed the deadlift is but within a couple of years we could see crazy figures if these guys are training specifically for it regularly 👌

100% i wanna see somebody beat Donnie Thompsons 1300lb squat. or even the deeper 1200lb one. if anybody can do it, it'll be in a strongman event since it doesnt have to be a conventional bar or distance, just the weight and strength tends to matter and its more entertaining for the crowd than powerlifting straight is perhaps.

When I saw JFs opener, I just laughed. There is something comical about mogging the entire competition that you can not have any other reaction, but a good laugh.

I don't understand what th strategy was for this event for the Stoltman's coach. I understand Tom not going all out in this event because it's the worst event for him, and if he can place in the middle of the pack he should save energy for later. But why did Luke waste 2 attempts under 816 pounds, then jump all the way to 906? Luke clearly could've done around 861-880 and at least placed in the middle of the pack.

Can't fathom why Luke did such low opening lifts. Maybe match your bro for the opener but then get something competitive in the bank for a second lift. Really poor tactics to let Maxime and all the rest sneak ahead by going for such a big jump. Totally blown his chance at a decent standing in an event he should've at least been mid table in.

I agree, Luke was strong enough to hit 870-880 but poor tactics cost him massive points on this event

Ed Coan squatted 1,038 lbs on a regular barbell at a bodyweight of 220 lbs under the same conditions. I think if the squat were emphasized more in strongman we would see 550kg+ squats regularly the way we see 1000lb+ deadlifts.

Well walking it out is just so different to the powerlifting style thing where you can just unrack it and be ready rather than waste any concentration or energy. which doesnt sound important but when its nearly a grand on the bar every second and every inch counts.

This might be a stupid question.. but I really wonder how the competitors choose these weights for this max squat event - do they just pick 3 weights by themselves and that's it or do they all sit around and discuss it? Or how?
