    for anyone who wants to do the mod as well:
    *CHECK YOUR 4G NETWORK COVERAGE!*
    I am very happy with my Disco and wanted to do the same mod so I got a 8GB flat only to find out that here in germany there is almost no connection good enough except from the city surroundings, where I'm not allowed to fly anyways. Now I spent a shit ton of money for an 8GB flat and cant even use it. So again my advise is: Check if the country you wanna fly in got a good 4g network coverage!

    In Germany, you are supposed to keep your drone in visible sight range, that's rather impractical. Especially flying your drone via LTE cell connection like shown in this video thus is impossible.
    Here there are many mobile internet provider with different contracts and services, but I personally have a flatrate with 10GB of Data Volume for about 35$ every month. That's rather okay as my volume was upgraded automatically from 4GB by my provider due to technical development. Nice thing.

    • @danielharman4437
      @danielharman4437 Před 6 lety +6

    • @TKO593
      @TKO593 Před 6 lety +5

      Daniel harman The battery life usually has to include a trip back, but if you have a way to induction charge the Mavic on some sort of heli pad then I could set up a long flight. Also people have modded the Mavic with bigger batteries.

    • @RCP-1136

      RCP-1136 I won’t be at the landing site hence the land to charge idea. If I could do say a 5 mile flight one way then land on a special heli pad to charge. When it’s charged I can make the flight back. 10 mile round trip is a feat. I can think of lots of applications.

    To save on data, there should be a system that lowers the video frame rate as a function of altitude, speed and orientation change. Sometimes 2 FPS is acceptable when cruising straight at high altitude.

    Appears as if the GPS display shows COG (course over ground) rather than HDG (heading). The leeway of the wind is the cause of the difference between heading and ground track. If return to home mode was based on heading you’d end up with a curved actual track over the ground if there was a side wind. Just a guess though.

    This would work great to use with my plan. I have 2 hotspots i have through AT&T with unlimited LTE data. In most locations i get a constant 25-30MB download and 10-15mb upload with 45-50ms during the day and between 50 to 90MB down 20-30mb up with under 35ms at night. Each sim cost only 29.95 a month. I've had the plans for a year for one and 9 months for the other. The most data I've used in a single month was 1.21TB of data. It never slows down or throttles and I've never been charged more then the 30 bucks each. I can also use the sim cards in my laptop with LTE my phone and the hotspots. I'd love to do something like this. Thanks for the video. Also let me know if you'd like info on how to get the plan. It was a pain to figure out but once i figured it out takes 5 minutes. Just gotta stop by any AT&T store and pick up a sim card. Then activate it. Also don't know if this matters but i live in Utah. But works the same from Vegas or Portland all the places I've tried it.

    Whoa Dustin! Dude, this is freakin cool! Just dissappointed in the choppy video. How many reception bars did you have on your phone? Did you have the FPV video set on 720 or 480? Also wondering if you checked your data usage just before and right after the flight to determine the amount of data used...?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 6 lety +1

      I had 3 to 4 bars but certain areas the disco flew here had the lowest 4g coverage on the TMobile coverage map so that may have something to do with video. I didn't check what res I was in for FPV but pretty sure 720. I believe that flight used around 500MB when I looked at the data but record is unavailable while billing cycle is processing so I'll look later.

    • @whsbluesjam3673
      @whsbluesjam3673 Před 6 lety +2

      Not sure about this on your phone but on my Samsung S9+ I can monitor the data usage in real time. I often tether my phone to my laptop when needed for my job when I'm on the road. I just check the data usage before and after. Since my data usage is monitored right on the phone, I don't have to wait for a billing cycle to figure it out. There might even be an app available for phones that don't have this feature. This mod is totally cool and so inexpensive but I think it is better suited for those with unlimited data plans. :-)

I'm running a 7T and 8T One+Plus now. In lieu of your phone as tether/monitor/Glympse check---you have upgraded to an iPad mini for the larger screen? Or another reason? I have come back to this video a few times,,,and still trying to get my head around how the actual controller is staying connected to the DISCO? I have went to the UAVPAL website as well. I dont quite understand,,even with the Zerotier software installed how the controller is routing through the 'cellular' network,,,to stay in contact with the DISCO? Kind of picture the Zerotier virtual nics are making a 'round robbin' effect,,,from wifi,,,to LTE network,,but dont quite understand 'the workflow'. Am showing my stupidty it goes without saying.

    Question: Is it possible to change from Meters and Kilometers to Feet and Miles in the settings. My Parrot Bebop 2 is setup the same as your Disco and I haven't been able to figure out changing it or do I just have to deal with it in meters?
    Great Video, It was exciting being on your maiden flight with it with your new setup. That was a very hard landing, but it was very impressive how the Disco handled it so well and appeared to be totally fine. It will be great to see your flight with the bigger battery, I'm definitely looking forward to it, you're a great pilot 🙂

      Thanks Dave!
      I can't find the setting to change from Metric to Imperial in the Android app but it is an option in the iOS app. I should have pulled back on the throttle when landing and it will go into the slowest speed possible using it's sensors to keep it flying 👍

    • @davew5383

      Dustin Dunnill Thank you, I am using android, so I guess for now I'll just have to deal with it. It's ok I guess, I'm getting used to it.
      That's good to know for future reference, as far as pulling back on the throttle of the Disco during landing. But it definitely looked like a good crash test for it, it definitely passed lol 🙂
      I haven't bought the Disco yet, it's hard for me to find time to fly my Bebop 2, as it is. I absolutely love my Bebop 2 and definitely plan on buying a Disco. Your review on the Bebop 2 was why I purchased it.

    The biggest issue with this is the induced latency from routing through the carrier network. 500ms ping is nearly impossible to fly on when landing taking off where low latency is needed for safe control.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 6 lety

      It’s not much difference honestly. Fine for normal flying and landing. Getting close proximity to obstacles is risky though.

    • @MarcBuehler
      @MarcBuehler Před 6 lety +2

      If both SIM cards are from the same carrier, it should not relay via public Internet. I get pings (roundtrip time) of around 20 ms between Skycontroller 2 and the Disco over 4G. Latency = roundtrip / 2 = 10 ms. You won't be able to tell the difference compared to Wi-Fi in terms of latency.

      It might give the battery a little extra charge but not much

    • @MichaelNeese
      @MichaelNeese Před 6 lety

      I'd be concerned about the weight between the panels and the glue to carve them into the wings. I'm not sure the minor gain in charge would justify the weight. Then there's the flight characteristics. Even a couple of millimeters out of balance, that far out from the center if mass, and the software would go nuts trying compensate. It would probably be a disaster.

    • @tomxygen5963
      @tomxygen5963 Před 6 lety

      being in the center of mass wouldn't be a major concern since the gyros are working to compensate. My major concern is about the weight.

I usually get ti down to 10 feet on final...over the field hit the button and it senses it’s at low altitude reduces power and at 3 feet or so reverse thrusts to settle down....seems to be working though I’ve only done it half dozen times...looked like you were trying to do that manually??
