  • Interview expert & journalist Andrew Gold breaks down and reacts to Tom Cruise's scientology meltdown on Matt Lauer's show. Formerly of BBC and HBO, he analyses the shocking infamous interview between scientologist Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer, when Tom Cruise calls the interviewer glib for disagreeing about the use of psychiatry (the enemy of scientology) in mental health. In particular, they argue about actress Brooke Shields' use of Ritalin and antidepressants to treat her. Katie Holmes watched from backstage, as Tom Cruise made this one of the most famous interviews of all time. It will have been appreciated by scientology leaders and high-ups, including David Miscavige and John Travolta.

I remember this interview from the day it happened at the time I thought he was crazy, he'd jumped on the couch, attacked Brooke Shields for the medical treatment she received for post partum depression and was so aggressive in this interview and I have never been able to separate his acting from the real him ever since.

My dear sister is Schizophrenic, and times when she stopped taking her medication, she was so paranoid, delusional, hallucinating, hearing voices, etc. And then when she would get help to get back on her meds, she was sooooo much BETTER! So in terms of someone who suffers from a mental illness, there is NO WAY POSSIBLE they can be off meds! You can not cure Bipolar or Schizophrenia! And it scares the crap out of me to think that Hubbard told his followers that you just lock them up in a room! Now that's barbaric! People who are suffering from delusions and hallucinations and so on, NEED medication. Now regarding giving kids meds for A.D.D and ADHD, I do believe that sometimes kids could be wrongly diagnosed. But sometimes not. I do believe that some kids who might have behavioral issues will get diagnosed with ADHD. But might not truly have it. It does happen. But then there are cases where kids might really need meds for stuff like that. But regarding psychiatry, scientologists are completely wrong about their way of thinking. The ONLY reason Hubbard don't like psychiatry is because they thought that Dianetics was a joke! So that's what got him hating them. Not because he truly feels like they harm people or whatever!

Oh Andrew, I really cried laughing when you did the 'tongue' thing - that was beyond funny. Here's the thing for me. I have been taking powerful psychotropic medicines for over 20 years as a result of my life being a living hell for a decade before that due to mental health issues. I am happy to say that I have had years of stability and functionality in my life as a direct result of using these meds. I haven't got a clue about the history of Psychiatry and my story will not necessarily reflect the experience of others but for this twisted little fucking leprechaun to get into a huff and pontificate about all psychiatry and psychotropic medicine just being plain wrong and masking a problem makes me want to throttle him - and not for the first time. Didn't I hear you say something in a podcast about how a Scientologist at a high level like Cruise despises being told 'well done' by a subordinate? Because when Matt praised him that was when he really lost the plot along with the tongue thrust. He is so good at making blanket statements about his beliefs and what he 'knows' but when questioned about any of it he hasn't got a clue. He is a total charlatan imo and when you ask 'what you should look at next' I think you have allocated more than enough of your very precious and valuable time to this nut. Thanks for the video Andrew, Andrew, Andrew. You clearly know the character of Cruise way better than Cruise does 🙂 I love how you broke this down!

There is a difference between learning about Ritalin and psychiatry and reading and believing scientology propaganda about Ritalin and psychiatry. An interesting question would have been to ask Tom how much has he read about the opposing point of view. What does he know about the opposing point of view? Does he understand that the positions he advocates are not accepted by the medical profession? What studies has he read based on statistically valid data? Does he know the difference between anecdotal evidence and statistically valid data? I wager Tom Cruz would be incapable of dealing with a challenge like that and he would storm off the stage. Might not be a good interview but it would be fun to watch. And I'm pretty sure Cruz would never do an interview with Lauer again. Not much of a loss.

This is a PSA : if you are not medically trained in psychiatry do not shame people or judge them for using psych meds for their mental health!! You should be proud of someone for taking responsibility for their illness!!! If they’re having problems with their medication, encourage them to talk to their doctor and do not quit psych medicine without talking to them first! You can have a relapse if you quit those drugs cold turkey.

anything he read or studied was given to him by scientology, and completely one-sided. but he's an expert now 🙄🤮
it would be funny if it wasn't so disturbing.

@@thomkatt3385 It would be nice if we could just laugh it off, but as you said, it's disturbing. I've always looked on Hubbard as pretentiously ridiculous. Tragically, there is also ruthlessness.

the one thing I can say about Tom and his "expertise" is that it is an indicator of how unhinged he and scientology are. still disturbing, though, because people will blindly follow and believe famous people.

@@thomkatt3385Cults tend to keep a low profile & stay out of the limelight to keep the members isolated & controlled. Being basically a con-man, Hubbard saw the potential draw celebrity members would have for recruitment. He just had to make sure they were well educated in all things Scientology.

I feel like “Get Out” among other things is an allegory for how cult/group think can imbed itself so much, so deeply into your psyche that you become a different person. TC got “Get Outted” and he needs to GTFO.

Tom’s really got that manspread going on, along with his mansplaining. We are all still very primal.
