- Interview expert & journalist Andrew Gold breaks down and reacts to Tom Cruise's scientology meltdown on Matt Lauer's show. Formerly of BBC and HBO, he analyses the shocking infamous interview between scientologist Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer, when Tom Cruise calls the interviewer glib for disagreeing about the use of psychiatry (the enemy of scientology) in mental health. In particular, they argue about actress Brooke Shields' use of Ritalin and antidepressants to treat her. Katie Holmes watched from backstage, as Tom Cruise made this one of the most famous interviews of all time. It will have been appreciated by scientology leaders and high-ups, including David Miscavige and John Travolta.

You should look at the long interview of LRH that's been Technicolored. There are several places where it looks like he stops to smell how own BS and does he ever LOVE the way it smells!!!
He is not a MD to say that that seeking out medical professional counseling or therapy is destructive! He is forcing his own opinion which could cost somebody to not go and not get the help that they need. By his words he is actually causing damag.
There was another "tongue-lashing" around 15:19-15:20.
Have to put this on full screen, there is a big picture of the tiny COB and a scientology ad right under your video. Accidental??? Doubt it. Talk about not knowing your audience

It seriously makes me wonder just how scared his wives became of him and of Scientology. I remember this interview from the day it happened at the time I thought he was crazy, he'd jumped on the couch, attacked Brooke Shields for the medical treatment she received for post partum depression and was so aggressive in this interview and I have never been able to separate his acting from the real him ever since.
Well said, TC is just an obnoxious little creep, who thinks the world revolves around him..
Totally agree 👍
Right!!??!!❤
Goo goo ga ga
Off with his head!
The more I learn about Tom Cruise the less I respect him. His acting may stand up for itself, but the public knows better about him as a human being. Johnny Depp is a great example--he had his substance problems, but he is a genuinely good, kind, and generous person, always has been. People LIKE him. Tom Cruise? Not so much.
Haven't paid to see top gun 2 as my own personal protest. He is the epitome of GLIB
I wouldn’t even give Cruise the time of day! Depp is quite different!
@kib1455 I’m not crazy about Tom but I don’t think Depp is that ‘good’ any more. Not exactly classy.
@@storey8965 we see many more examples of empathy and empathy with Depp.
I was SHOCKED when I heard how both he and Amber spoke to each other. I feel sorry for them.
Cruise can’t act for shit next to depp. No comparison! With depp you know he’s himself most of the time, but for cruise everything is an act. Marriages, children, everything
Oooh where to start….
Tom is clearly projecting he is superior to all mentioned and the interviewer. He gaslights, deflects, talks down to (Matt, Matt, Mmmmmatt…) and tries to physically intimidate.
Wow. A whole psychopathic narcissist lecture right there….. love this Andrew🙌🏽🙌🏽
Yes, and I wondered if he is more aggressive towards men. He was so different in Oprah's interview..

@@michellemooresings well he was up against another master manipulator. I feel like this is just as much about Matt as it is Tom.
@@michellemooresings She never posed a real threat to his sense of control... seen from the HG tudor perspective...lol.
With Matt being the interviewer poking Tom with tough questions, you can see what happens when that sense of control is touched upon. Reactions come quick as if having switched the light on.
I use this now when i suspect someone of being an anti social person.
You question them carefully about something they are sensitive about and you get an INSTANT reaction, usually passive aggression, or openly... or deflection but it is instantly.
@@alainvosselman9960 interesting. So sad they use a false psychology.
I’m horrified at what I witnessed here. I had Post-Partum Psychosis after my third child. It is like being awake but in a parallel world of nightmares while everything seems normal but I was in a nightmare whilst awake. Receiving messages from dead relatives, voices in my head telling me to kill myself as my children would be better off. It was psychiatry and medication that cured me. I wouldn’t be here now.
I am so happy you got the help you needed and deserved. To think there were times when that sort of thing wasn’t known or spoken openly about!
My spouse is one month in on antipsychotics and even though the side effects are tough on him, it’s so good to see the actual him again.
I will never forget the first time I watched this interview, it made me so unbelievably angry! I have not watched a Tom Cruise movie since this interview and I never will.
Same.
Andrew I worked as a psychiatric nurse for over 25 years, yes psych meds can damage absolutely. But I've also witnessed extremely psychotic, delusional and very violent patients throughout my practice, that unless they were on meds would be suicidal and or homicidal. Tom Cruise lives of course in his own matrix of criticism, narcissism and ignorance. This I don't see him changing anytime soon.
I agree with this. I think there's an overdependence on psych meds sometimes but they're absolutely necessary in other cases. Not a bad idea to talk about the dangers of prescribing them carelessly, but that's not what he was doing. He doesn't believe in any mental health treatment....
I never get sick of watching this interview, hysterical

Imagine if Lauer had actually said to him "you have no education, never researched for years and years with medical professionals of various fields, and you're only a actor!" And "Will you agree to come back Tom and debate LIVE ON AIR a group of medical professionals on this complex subject?" By the way, don't you think that all of us are "wogs" and "degraded beings"?
People like him have a terrifying capability of speaking their opinion in ways it seems like it were written on some stack of holy tablets... And there is no way you can even argue with 'm. I find those particular types of individuals very dangerous.
@@alainvosselman9960 it's called pathological narcissism, stubbornness, righteousness mixed with massive chip on the shoulder.. I truly think he has mental illness of various sorts and varying degrees. 1) what person like him needs a "self help religion" for over 3 decades? 2) what kind of person chooses said "religion" not once, not twice, but three times over their wives? 3) what kind of person thinks their "religion" documented kissing their butt 24/7 for over 3 decades is not only normal, proper, decent, appropriate, but even DESERVED? 4) what kind of person again and again and again risk their lives for JUST a scene in JUST a movie?

Great Video Andrew, I just want to say, there's good and bad in everything, and I would like to tell Mr. Cruise, that I watch my brother's mind, sink into Schizophrenia, and if he didn't have a good physiologist and keeping his meds balanced. I would be dead, because the voices told him I was bad, he should kill me. Which he tried a few times. And there are many people out there in the same boat. So Tom. Until you have watched someone become a completely different person, as their mind is lost. You know nothing and should be quiet.

Great point Aimee!
Excellent observation!!
Agree. It's actually bizarre since cruise has for decades given scientology 100% credit for his success ( minus that personal life of course!), when the truth is? HE WAS A SUPERSTAR BEFORE HE EVER HEARD OF SCIENTOLOGY!... What they helped him a bit with his alleged dyslexia ( a story in itself that changes so much), helped him with his mean daddy issues (another story way overblown) and kissed his ass? And still need it 3 decades plus??
@@tomschmitz261 I think it's crazy that these people, Scientologists, including Tom Cruise, look at L. Hi Andrew 👋. That was a fantastic video. One of the BEST of yours, in order for the audience to get to know you, your thoughts, your opinions. I thoroughly enjoyed that insight. ❤️ Re Tom, it's hard to believe he spent a decade married to a woman who's father was a top psychiatrist, and someone Nicole was very close to. Anyway, once again, great pull apart and commentary Andrew. Loved that.
The rules are bent for celebs - especially of that caliber.
Wow, thank you Lisa! I will hopefully do some more like that if it proves popular. I certainly enjoy it, it gives me the chance to edit a bit, and be creative, rather than only interview others (which i also love doing).
I ABSOLUTELY agree.

Freaking unbelievable - I remember that mother in Texas suffering from serious post-partum depression with psychosis and ended up drowning her children. Her doctor and husband failed to help her. It was deadly and horrible for everyone involved and no one intervened to help her before she killed her children even though there was already a history from the prior births. Also as a mother who tried everything to avoid medication for her son with serious ADHD and failed, I acknowledge that it was the medication that turned things around for him at school and with his friends. He is a great kid and future looks bright for him now.
I think Suri is so lucky not to have him running her life. Good for Katie getting her out of that Scientology BS
You’re REALLY great at breaking these interviews apart, Andrew. The one other thing I noticed in his manner of speech is the way in which he gets all “breath-y” when he’s emphasizing certain condescending words. Does that makes sense? Lawd, he bugs the hell of out me. 🙄

I will not watch anything with Tom Cruise. He is nuts. He is the demigod of a cult. I love your analysis of him.
Thank you Betty !
I’m fascinated by your take on cults. I wish I had a resource available to me like you, when in the 80s my ivy League educated sister was enmeshed in Woerner Earharts cult EST. Out of curiosity I went to a three day training, lasted two days and found it terrifying, no one was allowed to use the bathrooms unless it was an appropriated time to eat or drink (which never happened) and we were locked in for 8 hrs. I watched a very pregnant woman empty her bladder on her metal folding chair and not able to clean up, because you had to follow the rules. Someone admitted to the group of @400 ppl murdering a family member and getting away with it. We were all told that “it stays here,” “GET IT.” I would appreciate your opinion re: this cult because it destroyed our family for many years. Their secrets out because there has to be many others that have experienced EST and it’s left nothing but pain.
Ah man! Sorry you had that experience penny !
You experienced a close encounter with Scientology. EST is an off shoot of it. But Scio doesn't stop you from going to the toilet, or make you tell your transgressions in a group setting (unless you work directly under the leader - who reveled in humiliating his staff to the degree he would make staff admit to shit they never even thought of doing in front of each other, then give them derogatory nick names revolving around said transgressions).
And did someone teach Tom pointing in someone's face is rude?!

My dear sister is Schizophrenic, and times when she stopped taking her medication, she was so paranoid, delusional, hallucinating, hearing voices, etc. And then when she would get help to get back on her meds, she was sooooo much BETTER! So in terms of someone who suffers from a mental illness, there is NO WAY POSSIBLE they can be off meds! You can not cure Bipolar or Schizophrenia! And it scares the crap out of me to think that Hubbard told his followers that you just lock them up in a room! Now that's barbaric! People who are suffering from delusions and hallucinations and so on, NEED medication. Now regarding giving kids meds for A.D.D and ADHD, I do believe that sometimes kids could be wrongly diagnosed. But sometimes not. I do believe that some kids who might have behavioral issues will get diagnosed with ADHD. But might not truly have it. It does happen. But then there are cases where kids might really need meds for stuff like that. But regarding psychiatry, scientologists are completely wrong about their way of thinking. The ONLY reason Hubbard don't like psychiatry is because they thought that Dianetics was a joke! So that's what got him hating them. Not because he truly feels like they harm people or whatever!
Would love to hear someone say to him, “Now Tom, Tom,Tom, Tom, Tom, listen Tom, Tom, I need you to focus. Tom , Tom? TOM!, listen to me , Tom! Listen, Tom!

Oh Andrew, I really cried laughing when you did the 'tongue' thing - that was beyond funny. Here's the thing for me. I have been taking powerful psychotropic medicines for over 20 years as a result of my life being a living hell for a decade before that due to mental health issues. I am happy to say that I have had years of stability and functionality in my life as a direct result of using these meds. I haven't got a clue about the history of Psychiatry and my story will not necessarily reflect the experience of others but for this twisted little fucking leprechaun to get into a huff and pontificate about all psychiatry and psychotropic medicine just being plain wrong and masking a problem makes me want to throttle him - and not for the first time. Didn't I hear you say something in a podcast about how a Scientologist at a high level like Cruise despises being told 'well done' by a subordinate? Because when Matt praised him that was when he really lost the plot along with the tongue thrust. He is so good at making blanket statements about his beliefs and what he 'knows' but when questioned about any of it he hasn't got a clue. He is a total charlatan imo and when you ask 'what you should look at next' I think you have allocated more than enough of your very precious and valuable time to this nut. There is a difference between learning about Ritalin and psychiatry and reading and believing scientology propaganda about Ritalin and psychiatry. An interesting question would have been to ask Tom how much has he read about the opposing point of view. What does he know about the opposing point of view? Does he understand that the positions he advocates are not accepted by the medical profession? What studies has he read based on statistically valid data? Does he know the difference between anecdotal evidence and statistically valid data? I wager Tom Cruz would be incapable of dealing with a challenge like that and he would storm off the stage. Might not be a good interview but it would be fun to watch. And I'm pretty sure Cruz would never do an interview with Lauer again. Not much of a loss.

Just a quick question that I'm not sure if you've covered already. And if you have, I'm sorry, as I'm still going through your videos. Good analysis of the Matt Lauer interview, including body language. Cruise is so adversarial. He has a serious issue with "I am right, you are wrong" syndrome. He projects such a superiority complex. Just like school yard bullies who have such an inferiority complex, they must act superior to everyone else. Although I love many of his movies, I have become more and more distrustful of him as a person. Very sad to me. 😥
Thanks copley!
Short men always seem to have this problem.
Reading a book doesn’t make you know everything about psychology, it takes a hell of a lot ie analysing, statistics, evidence, past works etc. my daughter is working very hard towards her masters.
i bet! congrats to your daughter, Adelia, and thanks for watching :)
Great job Andrew!!! You are spot on!!! Tom Cruise is nuts!!!
thank you carolyn!
I laughed at Tom Cruise's comment about a particular drug being mind altering. Isn't scientology a mind altering cult of which Cruise is drowning in? Also, Andrew's side tongue looked much better on him than Cruise!!
haha it is! and thanks jacelyn, i'll try to wear the side tongue more often
Great analysis! New subscriber here. Decided to subscribe after watching your talk with Emily (?) Green. Hearing from people who have escped such horrible situations is so important. I had forgotten that Tom is such a reprehensible, arrogant and vile person. I actually flipped the bird in his direction when he stated that chemical imbalance is not real. I have bipolar, which is generally a chemical imbalance. It has been treated quite well, thank you, with medication and counseling. What a douche!
hi angela, sorry to hear about the bipolar, and sorry that the likes of Cruise claim it doesn't exist! Hope you enjoy the channel, and glad the medication and counselling has worked well!
Except that is has now been admitted by the psychiatric industry that chemical imbalances in the brain actually AREN'T real....
Your tongue wagging made my tongue wag! 🤪
❤️Andrew Gold ~Happy New Year! ✨
I feel like you'd have to train for a marathon before interviewing Tom Cruise. So aggressive, overwhelming, defensive and willing to be insultive of the level of intelligence of who he speaks with. He's like a one track programmable robot. I bet it's mentally and physically exhausting just getting his breakfast ready in the morning 🙄
Yeh it’d just be impossible. Still, I’d love the chance
I'd love to see that! I have a feeling he would completely choreograph the set before hand when he finds out how tall you are 🙄 Would be a great show! 😁
It's just bizarre how Tom calls antidepressants "anti-psychotic". It's like Amber Heard's interchangeable use of the words "donate" and "pledge".
Very weird !
"Drugs aren't the answer. The answer is to hold on to soup cans and let someone tell you what happened in a past life or pull thetans out of your body." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
New subbie. I appreciate your work and humor. There are times I just laugh, then my eyebrows are raised. I think I am going clear, lol.
Hahahaha made me laugh maple leaf
Wow.. Literally biting his tongue!!😳 He's livid!!
He's so unstable and has been for a very long time but ppl are so vain they just think about his looks and job and fan out over him. I've never found him attractive and his ego and narcissistic ways is why him and David are so close. In his head he'd be next in line to run Scientology 😅
Matt is not paying so he gets no explanation!
exactly that!
It is scarily impressive how good scientology is at warping people's minds to the point that they become unhinged at the drop of a hat instead of acting like they normally would in a particular situation. Scientology purports to teach people how to be in control of their emotions but it's the complete opposite! Tom is obviously being driven by righteous rage here. It begs the question of whether he would act like this if he weren't in scientology 🤔
Good points Megan !
First time I saw this interview I felt sick. Thanks for the great video, Andrew. Here for the comments too.
Thank you Lemon Baked !
I am " yelling at the screen " answering and agreeing with all of your comments ❤️❤️❤️brava
Haha thank you , that’s what I aim for !
@@AndrewGold1 I let off some steam and you were SPOT ON! The whole commentary ✌️🤘🏻💯💯💯so I only had to disagree and yell at TC 🍆....and laugh with you!!! Great job! GOOD ON YA MATE👋✌️🙋♀️🎶

And again!!!!! I absolutely love your commentary on this interview!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😜😜😜✌️👋🤘🏻😉🫶🏼💯
haha thanks!
...I wonder how the holidays went when Tom was married to Nichole Kidman. Her father was a very well known psychologist (?)
Has Tom got a biochemistry, psychiatry, pharmaceutical degree or a trained doctor? All he knows is an abstract bias and brainwashing method.
Haha he certainly believes he does
Just like Hubbard. They're all carbon copies of Hubbard, as designed by Hubbard.
@@AndrewGold1 it is of my personal belief, from personal experience that the therapies work. Yet I know for some they don't, like I used to be a big fan of Tom but his brand of crazy has sent me on my way.
'Reasonable' is a very bad word in Scientology. Its an insult lol
Strange how society chooses to idolize people who pretend to be other people… that’s their talent. That’s what we idolize. Weird
So what happened to the girl that was locked in a room for many days, and then passed 3 or 4 hospitals whilst on the way to a scientology doctor?
She died.
Janet Reitman wrote a very good book about scientology, with an entire chapter dedicated to what happened to Lisa McPherson. if scientology didn't do anything else that was illegal/immoral, what they did to Lisa would be enough to make you revile it.
or course, I also say the same thing about what they did to Paulette Cooper.
Like a reptile about to pounce😂
it did look like that!
HAHAHAAAAAA!! Nice tongue and lip add in ANDREW!! Laughing out loud!! Thankyou! As always perfect timing 🫶🏼it's evening and already dark🤗🫶🏼💯
"You're the guy from Risky Business.... "
🤣💀
I wonder if Peter Overton had to pay for the 4-Hour course he had to take
Haha good point
This is hilarious thanks ...
Just found your channel and subbed. Interesting content!
Thanks robin !
Great content Andrew. Subscribed
Welcome aboard!
When i hear, "I've done the research.", i get a vision the person taking a few personal notebooks out of a desk & rereading what they wrote themselves & then calling it done & dusted. Something written explains & supports what he's been saying, so it's got to be legit.
anything he read or studied was given to him by scientology, and completely one-sided. but he's an expert now 🙄🤮
it would be funny if it wasn't so disturbing.
@@thomkatt3385 It would be nice if we could just laugh it off, but as you said, it's disturbing. I've always looked on Hubbard as pretentiously ridiculous. Tragically, there is also ruthlessness.
@@animerlon hubbard was all kinds of bad things.
the one thing I can say about Tom and his "expertise" is that it is an indicator of how unhinged he and scientology are. still disturbing, though, because people will blindly follow and believe famous people.
@@thomkatt3385Cults tend to keep a low profile & stay out of the limelight to keep the members isolated & controlled. Being basically a con-man, Hubbard saw the potential draw celebrity members would have for recruitment. He just had to make sure they were well educated in all things Scientology.
@@thomkatt3385 He's learned his lessons well. As disturbing as the whole thing is, i can't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of it sometimes.
I feel like “Get Out” among other things is an allegory for how cult/group think can imbed itself so much, so deeply into your psyche that you become a different person. TC got “Get Outted” and he needs to GTFO.
Love that film!
Tom’s really got that manspread going on, along with his mansplaining. We are all still very primal.
Love ❤️ your analysis 🧐
