  • Leicester Tigers have the best rugby academy in the World. This is why. Over the last two decades, they have produced some of the best rugby players on the planet and their identity is the embodiment of the English rugby ethos: hard-nosed, fast-paced and at times ruthlessly brutal.
The club has a strong tradition of producing home-grown players. Tigers legends Martin Johnson and Graham Rowntree were developed from a strong youth structure and Tigers recognised very early that an Academy system was needed to develop players capable of playing professional rugby. In 1998 the Tigers Academy was established with players such as Harry Ellis, Sam Vesty and Louis Deacon among the first to successfully come through the system. In 2002, Tigers were rewarded for their pioneering work with RFU Academy status. The programme has produced more than 100 age-grade internationals as well as producing British & Irish Lions caps Tom Croft, Dan Cole, Harry Ellis, Ollie Smith, Manu Tuilagi, and Ben and Tom Youngs.
RugbyPass goes behind the scenes of the programme to see what it takes to become a Leicester Tiger; going on a journey with Academy hopefuls over the course of their championship. We see the laughs, we see the pain and we see what it takes to make it at the highest level. RugbyPass presents: ‘The Academy’.

New Zealand doesn't really have academies per say at least not in the European sense, because they don't really need them to be honest. The players are produced by the schools system which is the best in the world, only rivaled by South Africa. Then guys will play in the NPC/Currie cup to prove themselves. There's a lot more competition and it's better for developing players.
In Europe they have to use an academy system because the schools/clubs system for youth is not up to par. They have to centralise the development system so that high potential players can develop alongside similar level players. The schools system in Ireland and England for example has far too many soft private school boys. So when you see European players "dominating" at schools level it's not much of an indicator of anything.

Iluvmusicqwe agree with you mate apart from the “soft private schools” The reasons that we have academy’s are because we have such a large population but very few in comparison of boys playing rugby. So what I’m saying is that hardly any of the state school system boys play rugby which is fair enough if they don’t want to no one can force them or anything but I’m just saying if rugby was played in schools in England like they are in the schools in New Zealand then are playing level would be much more up to par. We also have schools like sedbergh and wellington which are British public schools who are well up to the standard of playing rugby. This is proven by how many international players come from these types of schools because they are given scholarships in the sixth form but they mainly develop their skills and learn to play at a higher level in the sixth form. However I respect your opinion and I mainly agree with it.👍

It currently loses 40 million each year and this was brought in to make sure it wont be 100 million a year in 10 years time. Why should this apply to Leinster? And I doubt players like Doris Kelleher Degan or Will Conors are on big money they probably all still get the bus. The internationals and James Lowe are on big money but a lot of the squad only have development contracts.

    • @badgie08

Leinster’s wage bill would barely make it in to the top 10 premiership wage bill. 95% of Leinster senior squad are homegrown players. Add to that the fact that a further 30+ Leinster grown players are playing pro rugby and it begins to paint a picture of who has the best academy in the world.

You cant tell how good a player will be until their in their early 20s I'm sure you have seen players when playing rugby who where amazing at 16 or 18 but absolutely average looking by 23. A good example is O Driscoll he couldn't make his schools starting 15 team at 18 but 3 years later was the best center in the world. Also if your from Leinster ( If anyone's still buying that ) or have any knowledge of Irish rugby you will know the Leinster Accademy train with the first team their not segregated most of them have played professional rugby. Oh yeah and do you know what a Sub Accademy is probably never heard of such a thing being from Ireland and all that 😁

there is no doubting the rich heritage of leicester tigers ... that said, the past decade has been very poor by their previous high standards .... i would agree with much of the previous commentary that this is a nice 20 minute segment but the likes of quins, london irish, gloucester, sarries and leinster in the uk and ireland generate a much better quality player that then progress through to the premiership teams and national honours .... ALL of the kiwi and sa acadamies would put leicester to the sword in an open competition so no, the are not the best academy in the world.

Leinster have produced more Lion's, More International players, Way way more Professional players past and present. More World player of the year and European player of the year winners.
