  • Will we still be able to afford that Bicycle? Do these complaints only come from the Princes of the Universe? How we all unite in One Vision over an issue so minorly, even barely devicive? With Fried Chicken and appreciation of the Ogre Battle series, naturally. I dunno, I just wanted to talk about this weird barely-there controversy

    When we tally up all the battles and different versions of them, there are exactly 12520 units in the game in total, and their skill loadouts are tweaked manually. Considering they changed the skill system, some poor sod probably had to go through all of those and adjust them one by one.

      @Nick-hi9gx Před 2 lety +3

      Willing to bet it was more like...3-5 people, and then someone went over afterward to make sure they fit a schema. That would take a fraction the time, and thus cost, and...Square Enix, yknow? Has Matsuno EVER gotten to releasea game by them under his own schedule? Pretty sure every time it has come to "whelp, get it balanced-ish, let's ship this damn thing". VS, FF12, and TO PSP fell prey to that.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  Před 2 lety +1

      @@Nick-hi9gx Huh? Can't speak for 12, but for the others, stacking and exploiting complicated armor mechanics was the game. Interestingly TO PSP's balance has a lot more going on than most gave it credit for, often times misattributing a broken title to the few units they optimized. The great thing is that everything can be broken.
      Even when testing multiplayer metas, there was only one weapon that was truly in need of a nerf, and even then it had a slow start that had to be built around. Did you see what it was?

    • @Nick-hi9gx
      @Nick-hi9gx Před 2 lety +1

      @@CoffeePotato Oh, no I am saying all of his games get rushed at the end, because SE gets tired of his perfectionism. So all of them have a couple glaring balance issues that would be easy to fix, but then Matsuno would have done another iteration of the entire thing to get it "right". He did this with VS, with 12, and with the PSP release. Like the bow damage double calculating would have been an easy fix, make them not use str, but then he would have done an entire review of the whole system. Because he is notoriously meticulous. And SE are...not.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  Před 2 lety +3

      @@Nick-hi9gx But....they don't double calculate. It's a long story as to the how's and why's, but the simplest answer is that it all boils down to the armor mechanics and years of wrong information circling around from no official source explaining them. Even the guide doesn't go into it.
      Bows, for example, do scale at a higher rate towards Dex than Str, but do not double scale. Dex is easier to stack because it gets bigger bonuses. Str doubled as extra soft armor, so it's not as available. This by itself means nothing, it's a minor advantage.
      The bow can fire at end game shield units, and hit 1. It all comes down to armor. Bow skills, Augs, and Racials all stack Attack value, weapon and skill Attack goes vs enemy armor, minus any skills nullified from having matching skills. So stats basically decide advantage, skills and gear determine the number that gets scaled.
      Wherever it lands, that's when bonuses kick in. These are all those numbers over your weapon, minus the corresponding numbers on the enemy armor. This additionally has it's maximum raised or lowered by Prevailing Element status.
      The amount of crap flying around more or less amounts to "if you penetrate armor, your numbers go to the moon. If not, you will do nothing or just low numbers."
      Bows get their pick of targets, meaning even one early skill rank can snowball into a lot of extra damage for them. Any weapon can do this, though.

If it sells 100,000 copies we will never get another Tactics Ogre, if it sells 300, maybe, the more it sells, the more likely we are to get a new Entry in the series. I mostly agree with everything you said, people do look at the price of games weirdly and for potentially hundreds of hours of content 50 is a good deal, not to mention what's changed with this version. Two points:
    1) While the upscaled sprites have grown on me too, it's just disappointing that at the end of the day they are fundamentally the same sprites that were used for the snes version almost 30 years ago. I'm not sure how much it would have cost to redo them but think of this game from a new players perspective, they'll look at the screenshots of the new game, compare it to PSP, and say "it's just upscaled," and maybe they'll think it's not worth buying it, the sprites are what your going to be spending your time looking at and new ones, imo, should have been the top priority rather the voice acting. But again no clue what the budget/costs would have been.
    2) I just wanted a new recruitable character at the end of the game, nothing that's relevant to the game plot wise, throw something in talks, give us a battle or two and then they join. Just something they could advertise as "new content."

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  Před 2 lety +1

      For both of those, I'm assuming it's down to the butterfly effect. I should have elaborated on this more, but they had to make space for Coda, it was tight, I mean the coda chapters don't even get JPGs to show the guide. There's only so many slots and spaces to put stuff within the game, something that the One Vision mod has been reporting on for years. It's very likely they simply couldn't do it without far deeper changes that they had no possible time to test. Raics even mentioned earlier that there's already 12500+ individual units that had to be updated for the new balance. Now imagine if each one had to be tested for oddly specific visual bugs. Like how there's one golem on POTD that makes a tile look out of place for no apparent reason. Or on San Bronsa where a tile stripping effect hitting one of the platforms can make it look weird.

    As for the graphical complaints, I think the issue is that Squenix is caught between just redoing all the sprite work to match the higher fidelity of the music the UI and the voice acting and avoiding outrage from the old fans over replacing the classic sprites... so this is the compromise. Given how much voice acting work has to be done it seems like they certainly could've worked over the sprites... but that's what they did with the classic FFs and wound up having to remaster those games twice.

Hammers have higher Atk in general, Fusils have the most Atk and least scaling, while the rest are strictly scaling damage. Once you get past rank 5 or so, any weapon type can do that, it all comes down to what they're facing. Bows, Fusils, and Crossbows also benefit from faster training due to getting their pick of targets, making them often seem stronger than the rest. Funnily enough the best weapon in the game is still a crossbow, but one that often gets forgotten: The Damasc Crossbow.
      So daggers and bows scale really well, but part of their strength is their outlying status. Another part of the equation is nullification, where having the same skill as another unit nullifies it's effect, just like fort and strength cancel out. So more units will carry swords, therefore having sword ranks, therefore swords may be numerically far stronger than the bow, but that cancel out effect leaves them looking like they're bouncing off, because they lost penetration value vs end game armor.

    The problem I primarily see as a fault of SE and Matsuno basically telling people "Hey its a budget remake" but then people see basically regular game price, (Originally $60-$70 on steam, mebbe a mistake?) they're going to be upset. The hours to price argument really doesn't hold up for most people because as you are aware, even among your viewers, most people don't even finish the game, much less the additional routes and dungeons. The perception I think for folks has become that this is basically a lazy port of a game that has already been ported many times since SNES. The price doesn't bother me, but I could understand players being hesitant to see if it lives up to "feeling" worth the price tag post launch, because SE has more or less sabotaged their pre order phase in my eyes by making the game sound cheaply done with placating additions aimed at folks who don't like to read...playing RPGs XD.

This is especially an issue when I know I can just, all for free, grab the One Vision Mod, which has more love, time and effort put into it than this port seemingly, but that's based on not seeing the new game play. I would have liked to see some other additions, like new sprites for the demi human classes, a couple of added classes from other Ogre Battle games like Paladins, Dark Knights and Cataphrats would have been neat, I'd have also loved a way to kill Vyce, being the horrid character he is, as well as a lot of the other guys that turn on you when you start 2C, always pissed me off how everyone only joins you if you choose to slaughter innocent people.
    The element system in PsP was also kind of bad, because it was very unbalanced, Fire was just really good compared to say Ice, and using many elements on a team was actually a terrible idea, and when there's 8 elements, and only like 3 are good, meh lol.

    1. Remake the crafting portion that was on the PSP version
    2. Keep the non gender class. PS1 version was gender class based.

    Finally finished watching video, so I late to the party.
    Price point is always annoying question especially nowadays. People devalue games thanks to constant digital sales and steam especially. Then you add on top of that if game doesn't look "AAA", like it's 2D hence forth it "should be cheaper". Or hell, even if it's 3D, but uses deformed styles like SD Gundam - therefore it's "for kids" or "not serious" and also should be cheaper.
    Game prices nowadays are plummeted, while developing became more increasing hell, yet still people will always complain about prices regardless and then wonder why microtransactions and endless DLC exists.
    So yea. Niche games nowadays have it hard. Only select few managed to remain for one reason or another. They have literally no choice but be full priced regardless how "main" public will see it. That's probably only way to break even, and maybe make a bit of profit.
    It's too in style today to bash all corporation for sake of bashing, but ignoring circumstances why something the way it is - is dumb.
    Like personally, my problem with Reborn (and as been said I never played any other game) is just visuals. I like my crispy sprites with squares you can cut your finger off. But I know that unless it's heavily stylized like Triangle or Liva-A-Live with a lot of additional effects on top - it will (probably) never sell in HD age, or even go thru preproduction greenlight.
    So while I would prefer just having option of original sprites, I can see why they smoother them over and probably touched them up a bit. Even if it's not up to my liking, originals won't go anywhere, and as you said, it's another entire version of the game, not just port.
    Like I'm not happy about sprites looking as they are, nor I'm happy looking how SRW degrades compared to how it was, or how Disgaea became relying on 3D models, and I'll continue to not being happy about it cause I'm stubborn like that, but what can I do, these games are not made for me anymore, but for people who can't stand square pixels by people who can't afford to hire 2D artists cause working in HD is insanely pricy nowadays. So while I continue to eat my cactus, I at least aware why things like this, I guess? Sorry about rambling load of text.
    The more I learn about Tactics Ogre is more I want to get to play it eventually, regardless of version or visuals. So thank you very much for your videos once again, love hearing you talk about it.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, this whole topic is a whole rabbit hole of endless tunnels, it's all good, that's what we do here 🤣. I hear you, I always love a game being able to focus on mechanics over visuals or other cosmetics. If they can pull it off, great, but if it ain't in service to the game, what's the point? Like XCOM 2C is a weird outlier in that the 3D was a legit part of the mechanics, and through some bizarro magic, it not only got the AAA treatment, online, patches, an expansion, free DLC, 3 free soundtracks, and was 3d, but it pulled it off excellently. Meant to have more, but stuff's happening in the background, gotta get back to this.

    • @ksenolog
      @ksenolog Před 2 lety +1

      @@CoffeePotato As much I would love to put mechanics above everything, I still think presentation matters. Like for example Disgaea 6 after switching to 3D now has cutscenes of all attack animations displayed on separate loaded space not on the battle map - it breaks a flow of the game to speak. As well as 3D models from above way harder to locate and more boring looking than 2D sprites.
      Or constant blacking in and out in SRW 30 during animation attacks.
      For me it's all about them working together well. Reborn in this case is just an aesthetic issue which doesn't affect game too much for me thankfully.
      XCom is weird cause it hit mainstream really hard. Basically being the only turn based squad tactic game out there and everyone tried to be like it.
      It's about as weird as FE going full mainstream because of relationships.
      Neither one of them had complains about full price either, nor about DLC. Yet other SRPG do.
      I seen what 3D is a part of mechanics in XCom and it does look good, but I yet to play it, so can't really say much. It's not really about 3D being bad or something, Disgaea uses 3D maps from the beginning, it's really just my aesthetic taste for 2D sprites.
      Sorry to take your time with all the text, but really thanks for even just reading it. Just hardly much people to talk about SRPG usually.

      @@ksenolog All good, I love reading these. Disgaea is a really nice setup aesthetically, the weird just hits right.
      For XCOM, the 3d works because environmental nonsense is part of the strategy. You don't manual aim with your gun, but you can use your limited grenades to blow the ground out from one unit and line them up for an AoE with another, or remove mechanical units entirely. It just makes really good use of it's 3d. The best it'd been done to that degree before then was probably how Silent Storm handled it, allowing you to use everyone's senses as a sort of radar for blind shots through walls...but it's balance on both entries was really hard to follow at times. Like one grenade would one shot units, while the bigger one next to it wouldn't even take out an unarmored grunt. Or, by S3, Stealth was just broken entirely. Damn fine games though.

    • @ksenolog
      @ksenolog Před 2 lety +1

      @@CoffeePotato Disgaea hit really good balance of 2D sprites on 3D environment, especially before they gone HD sprites. HD was good but it limited a bit some animations and look in some places. 2D on 3D was good aesthetic, it's still out there thanks to Triangle and Digimon Survive, but quite rare.
      Yea, I've seen Xcom gameplay, as much I generally can't get to it cause I prefer OG, I will absolutely agree that they made urban battles make sense and use verticality and level destruction. Also aware of Silent Storm, but never really sat down and played it. My PC back then when I was obsessed over JA2 couldn't handle it, but when it could I mostly started playing console games.

JA Rage being this hilarious thing where you're basically doing a lower key mission based version of the decrepit old versions of some of the JA2 folks pulled out of retirement with a bunch of age debuffs. Gave me a chuckle, anyway. JA Back in Action was absolutely garbage in my book, though. Awful controls, stuff just broke randomly, and what should have been a cool pressure mechanic meant that a random villager could squad wipe you because your machete broke.
      XCOM2 Collection is absolutely just a fantasy game at this point, and I love it. You're playing a SRPG version of an 80s cartoon, which kicks absolutely all of the ass. When the teleporting ninja shows up with her army of GI Joe nonsense artillery guns and robots to shoot down your airship, you know you're playing a fun game.
      Side note, if you want a more modern OG XCOM experience but have done FMP and XCOM Files to death, the X-Division mod for Xenonauts is also a damn good time.
      Disgaea really did hit it right with the aesthetics, I have to say the 2DHD thing from Triangle really started rubbing me the wrong way over time. It's just hard to look at for longer periods, too much bloom and blur. Disgaea I could look at for ages, hell, Fell Seal nailed a similar esthetic on a budget, and while it lacks the visual polish, the amount of details just sells it to me.
