  • I have had this old Case 580b for about 8 years. I had never ran a backhoe before I got it. Only one time on a small backhoe attachment for a tractor. Which I was on for no longer than five minutes. The guy I purchased it from dropped it off and I was on my own. Therefore I am no expert operator. My intention with this video is only to share what I have learned along the way.
    These old backhoes are a bit tricky to operate in my opinion. The leavers take a while to get the hang of, but with time you will get more fluid. It took me about a year to feel confident in what I was doing. I would run the old case most of the weekend every chance I got. Mostly digging up stumps. Which was a task for a novice like myself. I learned how to do a lot, but a lot more of what not to do.
    Probably the hardest thing that I still cannot master are the swing foot control pedals. It doesn’t matter how hard I try. I can’t keep from making it creep in one direction or the other while digging. Therefore I just keep my feet completely off of them until I need to swing the bucket. The first big hole I ever dug with this backhoe I blew a swing cylinder. All because I left my feet on the pedals. Since then I have tried to master it with the same results.
    Blowing a swing cylinder was a big deal for me. It was my first real fix on the backhoe. This was well beyond my skill set. I had never even worked on hydraulic cylinders, but after some time I got it off. In my opinion it is to date the hardest cylinder to get off. I then took it to a shop to get the seal repacked only to be blown away by what their price was. I found someone else and still spent $250 getting it fixed. Since the. I have learned to keep my feet off the pedals. As well as repack the cylinders myself.
    I honestly do not know what I did before I got a backhoe. They make life a lot easier for so many different things. I have cleared a lot for our house to go one day, spread gravel, lifted boats, loaded equipment, and knocked down buildings. If you are looking to make the leap and purchase one. I would say if you can, go for it. I honestly do not know if I could go back to life without one. As long as you are somewhat mechanically inclined and willing to learn. You can really do a lot with a backhoe. Although if I had not done all the mechanical work and maintenance myself I don’t know if I could have justified it. Mechanics charge an arm and a leg to work on these old machines. Cylinders alone are $250-600 to just have them repacked. Just keep in mind you may have to diy when it comes to fixing things.
    I have been racking my brain on what I did not cover in the video. So far I am drawing a blank. I may have to come back and change that, but for now I think I have it covered. At least without going into maintenance. Which I have a few videos on already. I mainly want to cover a few basics. This video was requested and I hope it’s not to late. I have been so busy it has gotten put off. I apologize and hope this will still help. Thank you to everyone who has watched and subscribed! I hope you enjoy!

    Okay, Brother! Get OVER the transport position (or fighting it!). When you are prepared to move your 580B to the next digging position - Center the Backhoe. The Boom lever - next to the righthand outrigger needs to be pulled back right and up to when the boom is almost to the top...then force the lever forward... the boom will lock into position. It took me 50 passes to figure that thing out... now - LOCKED before I move EVERY TIME. It just takes practice and once you get it... you will snicker to yourself!

    Owned one for 20 years. 74 model. Loved it. It never let me down. And i could dig alongside most modern machines of the same size class. Ps. They will burn alot of power steering fluid. Filter is inside the ps reservoir. Mine had the shuttle. Always check ALL fluids. hytran or tch for the trans. 75/90 for the rear. Still have the shop manual. I'll be around .

    Hi there, I have a 580 C, the trick for getting the boom locked in the transport position: you have to have the dipper and boom at about 90 degrees from eachother, throttle up about 3/4 . Bring boom down to ground, raise boom ,(full pull), until it just about gets to its upper limit, and then reverse it, the momentum of the boom will continue to travel into the locked position...then you can bring the dipper back down. It took me alot trying...then I found a CZcams video on how to lock boom in transport position.

    To level bucket on right bucket cylinder there is an alignment tab also the white know you called the rear lock when your digging and spinning one tire with heel push that it will give you locked rear for more traction not for transport.

    @jakes.1199 Před 3 lety +1

    Yep, you are missing the backhoe lock hook. it is attached to a lever so when you are sitting at the controls you can unlock the boom and lower it. The other thing is............ your back hoe controls are hooked up wrong! lol, from right to left the levers should control the Boom, Dipper, Bucket. Just like the pictures that are in front of your levers, the center stick should control the dipper. The left stick should control the bucket. LOL, someone probably just hooked the hoses up to the wrong lever/spool valve. Someone that has been running a 3 stick Case backhoe for a long time would never be able to get used to yours.

      @@FishHuntCookTinker I have had mine for a couple years, and like you, do not have much operating experience. Mine is currently stuck in high range gears. Something i really need to fix because i just use it around my farm. Would much rather it be stuck in low range than high. I'm also like you, and don't rev the engine up very high when i'm digging. However if you read the manual or just ask a Heavy equipment operator, they will tell you to run it wide open or near full throttle. The hydraulic pump does not make its peak pressure until the engine is at a pretty high RPM.

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  Před 3 lety +1

      I finally had time to check out the controls, you are correct! I would have never know! I guess I’ll have to keep it that way. If I change it it will drive me crazy!
      I hardly ever take mine out of 1st. Maybe twice a year. I’d definitely take it easy till you get it fixed. Thankfully I have never had any transmission issues, but I have heard they are a nightmare.
      It may just be my lack of experience with the controls, but much past 1600 rpm and the controls get way to jumpy. I have a hard time digging smoothly. Almost like it jumps. I’m sure if I ran it hard more often I could get the feel, but for normal digging it works for me. I’m sure not having rocks on my land helps a lot.

      @@FishHuntCookTinker yes if you ever struggle with traction (hills, snow, mud) its a game changer.
      it just makes it so both tires spin together rather than being able to spin at different rates which means you never have one side slipping. Its an absolute necessity for me in the canadian winter.

    • @ourblessedtribe9284
      @ourblessedtribe9284 Před 2 lety

      @@FishHuntCookTinker another note though - just like on an old tractor, the differential lock only goes in or out while the tires are spinning. You cant just push it in when its parked and expect it to be on until you pull it out or something. theres a reason its by the pedals - so you can step on it while youre driving. Usually it takes just a bit of a tire spin to lock in place. I just stand on it for a second to get it to lock. you can feel it lock in.

    If you have a working manifold heater don't heat it if you are going to ether it. Use the about the same amount of ether as you would to start a single cylinder engine. I've been running Case hoes for 40 years not expecting it flipped one a year ago.

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  Před 2 lety

      I give it a tiny squirt of ether. I really don’t like using it, but it will grind forever before it starts or the battery goes dead. If it tells you anything. I still use the same can of ether that it came with when I bought it in 2013. One of these days I’m going to go through it and get it the way it should be. I just have to get some other projects out of the way. Thank you for watching and commenting!

    First time owner of a late 60s 580 B-Thanks for the posting. Great advice on the walkaround and fluid options. I am going to be starting the beast up for the first time, does the shuttle shift have a neutral position it needs to be in prior to starting? Or the transmission shifter have a neutral as well? Do both, either or neither of them have to be in a neutral state for turning the key? I got absolutely zero paperwork with this machine and it isn't your run of the mill garden tractor. Any advice on the actual startup procedure would be helpful and appreciated.

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  Před 3 lety

      I hope you love yours as much as I do mine. I am assuming yours is a shuttle like mine. With the shifter on the left of the steering column. It needs to me in neutral to start. Forward is forward, back is reverse, and in the middle is neutral. It should have a slotted catch for neutral. As far as the clutch pedal. The one on the left. It doesn’t have to be pressed down to start. I honestly only use my clutch pedal a few times a year. Only when I go on the road. I always leave it in first gear. Mostly because I am a chicken. I don’t want to find myself trying to dig or do something stupid in a higher gear. To replace the clutches is a big deal and very expensive. Plus I never go far or fast so it’s all I need.
      As far as start up give it a little gas and don’t wind on it for to long. If it doesn’t want to crank use a SMALL shot of starting fluid. I burnt out my first starter trying to crank it when it was cold. Although I believe it was already on its last leg. Check all your fluids and let it warm up for a bit. Especially in winter. That is about all I can think of. Just take it slow till you get the hang of it. Good luck and thank you for watching and commenting!

  • @dobetterknowledge1553

    Brother just some friendly advice. Edit down the video to under 10 minutes. There is a lot of chit chat that is not needed. Oh and never ever apologize for a video you are making.
    The only reason why I am suggesting this. If we are looking up how to do something. We need the information fast. We don't care about what else you got going on in your life.
    Also, the controls that you are moving should be camera centered. Seeing the backhoe move around does nothing for us. If we don't know which controls you are moving.
    It would have been better watching you get it started rather than starting it off camera. Because some of us might have the same issue and could've learned something from you.
    But I do want to thank you for at least uploading a video the more information shared the better. Just try and keep the videos short. 23 minutes is a long time.

      It definitely took me a while to the hang of. Those swing cylinders are a pain to get off. On mine the bolts were very hard to get to. Then again it was the first cylinder to go on mine. I was not really prepared for it. I don’t know if you have the means to repack them yourself, but that is what I started doing. You use to be able to get the seal kits for $30-40. I made a wrench to take the cylinders apart, but you can buy them online. If you just repack the swing cylinders you wouldn’t even have to take them off the machine. Loosen the hoses. Unscrew the cap and pull it apart. I will say the bolts that hold the piston seals on are TIGHT! I normally pull it apart. Then reattach the rod to the machine to hold it while I take the bolt out. My vise is no where near big enough to hold the rods. I use a 3/4 socket, pull handle, and a LONG pipe.
