This guy has no clue what he is talking about for the simple fact he believes blowing black smoke is spending more money somehow. When you see black smoke from a diesel it means it’s running rich “unburdened fuel” which isn’t wasting anything only thing it’s doing is hurting the performance of the truck and might get 1mpg less but it’s fun to roll coal on Prius drivers like Glynn Powell.

I wrote custom software that uses machine learning and an algorithm to anticipate when you're about to take off. It uses the power braking and the electronic throttle to starts pre-spooling the turbo for you, so when you actually do step on the gas pedal, the turbo is already spinning and the manifold is out of vacuum. Ive got it tuned so good that as the driver you can hardly tell it's happening, and most of the time by the time I put my foot on the gas pedal it's not only out of vacuum, but it's already got a few lb of boost, making accelerating from a slight roll feel just like a light passenger car at first, but since ALL turbo lag has been eliminated, if you bury the throttle you instantly have enough torque to pull a house off it's foundation and the thing is a BEAST! It makes driving a heavy tank feel like you're driving an electric sorts car!
Its not perfect, and it's not instant.. so if you act like you're about to take off, but something causes you to hesitant for whatever reason, my software shuts the program down (for obvious safety reasons) so then if you DO decide to go again immediately after you just hesitated (which is a VERY common situation) then it feels like a gutless slug, since it's dumped all that boost, the turbo(s) have spooled down and the fuel mixture changed automatically (as it should).
In a nutshell the way it works is the system monitors a handful of onboard sensors, like the brake and throttle position, an onboard accelerometer to determine the relative movement of the vehicle, onboard inclinometers to tell what the current "pitch" of the vehicle is (to tell whether you're currently rolling up or down a slight incline, like the one you might find when exiting a parking lot when pulling out onto the roadway), it even uses some limited GPS and geo data for when you might be stopped somewhere in order to assist the program in anticipating whether you're stopped just to stop/rest/park, or whether you're stopped in a lane of traffic, and if you're at an intersection, is it a stoplight? Or a controlled, 4 way stop sign? This way it knows whether you might be about to transfer from brake to throttle because the light just turned green? Or whether you're only stepping on the gas to move forward slightly..as the traffic in front of you slowly progresses closer and closer towards the stop sign.
It takes all of this data and it looks at what you (the driver) has done in the past during each of these situations, and it makes a "best guess" as to when it should start to spool up the turbo(s), and to what degree it.
If it thinks there's a high probability that you're about to take off because you're exiting a shopping center parking lot turning onto a 45mph, 4 lane, divided highway.. it senses you're rolling down a slight decline, lightly riding the brake pedal, with your RH turn signal on.. then, the accelerometer feels the "bump" as the front wheels hit the transition out onto the roadway, the steering position sensor reports you starting to turn the steering wheel to the right.. and then you suddenly lift your foot off the brake pedal completely.. the algorithm knows these inputs are all just further indicating that you're about to step on that throttle pedal and pull out onto the highway, and as such, it has been "preparing" for this inevitable, almost foregone conclusion, by slightly increasing the RPMs while simultaneously and proportionally applying more and more braking power in order to cancel out any slight forward motion you would normally feel as the torque converter starts to "grab" and the increased RPMs want to start propelling the vehicle forward. But since it is automatically applying the brakes at the same time, you (ideally) don't experience any unexpected forward motion, and the net result is, the increased RPMs is causing the turbo charger to spool up!
The "smart" aspect of the program is that since it's also monitoring how hard you're pushing on the brake pedal, it "knows" when you actually WANT to roll forward slightly, so it adjusts the amount of hold-back force it's applying as it's fighting off the forward torque being created by the increased RPMs, so.. if you had your radio turned up so you couldn't hear the engine RPMs increase, and you weren't watching your tach increase.. you'd never know the system is working, it would just feel like a typical roll-out from a normal parking lot..
That is, until.. you actually get a gap in traffic and it's your turn to go.
You let off the brake, transfer your foot onto the gas pedal and push it towards the floor.
Since your turbo is already spinning and your manifold is already in boost, your big heavy truck TAKES OFF like a rocket ship!
Its almost like using AI controlled, smart, launch control every time you take off!
And even though we're still testing the system out.. in over a million road miles and over 100k "assisted starts", we have noticed NO appreciable wear to the brakes, transmission, engine, not even to the life of the engine or trans oil! When the system is active, there is only a slight increase in temperature on a few of the components, (5-20 degrees F, and only when it's in active operation) and there is a SLIGHT impact to fuel efficiency, but even that was only noticable when averaged out over 5 complete tank fills. The extra fuel you "think" you might be using by spooling up your turbo in advance, is offset by the fuel you end up SAVING by not taking off from every dead-stop with a vacuum in the manifold.
Its like accelerating from a dig with a 100hp engine (until your turbo is up to speed). This sucks a LOT of fuel.
When your turbo is pre-spooled, you're getting instant access to all of that extra HP that your turbo provides your engine!
You also notice a LOT less black smoke when taking off from a stop when your turbo is spooled ahead of time.
Anyway. Your video just reminded me of the project I'm working on, so I felt compelled to talk about it.
Hopefully you'll get to see it in real life someday soon (the next few years). And who knows.. maybe it'll even be built into all OEM diesel engines some day!
