- 35mm Film Cameras are making a come back it would seem! Way to go Hipsters!
So here is a short video to help you understand how to use your new(old) film camera effectively. Going over your shutter speed, aperture, ISO/ASA, where to load the film, the archaic self timers, and much more.
I demonstrate the basic principles of how to shoot on Full Manual Mode with this Olympus OM-1. The features should be the same on most any other camera you can get your hands on. After all, this, the OM-1 was the model that redefined a generation, and everything that came after it, at least in some small way.
If you have any questions you think I should have explained in the video - ask away in the comments - I'll have a response for you real quick!
The "DOF" Preview - I know I forgot to talk about this bit. Its a little button usually somewhere near the bottom of your lens close to the body. What it does is close down the aperture to match your setting so you can see the Depth of Field, hence DOF Preview. This simulates the amount of focus each item in your frame with have if you record a frame with that aperture.

You can use 675 (blue) hearing aid batteries as a replacement. They're pretty cheap with how many come in a pack
what a great tip you've shared Spencer! thank you.
That's not the lens release. It's the rewind release lever so you can rewind your film back into the film cassette.
I can second that statement.
Rock on. Very helpful
You can get batteries for it. I got one at Batteries + Bulbs. Its the MRB625, I don't think they make the mercury ones anymore but any kind should work so long as it fits.
good to know, thank you!
Yeah, the lens release statement kind of ruined his credibility. I didn’t finish watching it after that either.
There were many interesting parts like the one you talked about a way to get the right focus but although it's a video it was way to quick for me 😪
sorry it was too fast Nina. any specific questions you may have? are you using the same camera as this? it's a beauty. i love it.
you skipped some important details here, f.ex how to apply the aperture and get the line between + and - to balance. Otherwise really good! thanks for sharing
hey Em, I had to double check, but yes I do include that! around the ( 5:13 ) mark I show where the needle is, although I couldn't show its operation anyways, as I mentioned I have been using this camera without batteries.
I believe some other commenters mentioned that batteries are indeed still available though - I just didn't have them at the time.
Thanks for watching and all the best in your photo endeavours.

50 seconds in is not the lense release. its the wind release. The lens release is on the lens.
Thanks for pointing that out Darryl. Someone had done so in the comments a few months ago too, but I neglected to put an annotation into the video at that time - just did now. Thanks again.
Chris Gardiner Photography no worries! great video all the same. cheers!
Chris Gardiner Photography Can’t see any annotation..?
I have one my self. A gift from a friend yrs ago. Thanks for breaking it down, but you forgot one thing, how to pop the film out. I've ruined two rolls already :/
me too..
See that little R switch on the front of the camera? That's the rewind switch. Point the red dot on the switch to R. After hearing the rewinding sound, turn the turnplate on the top left corner of the camera CLOCKWISE, keep turning until you hear clicking sound. That means the film has finished rewinding. Now open the cap and take the film out.
me too. i just got them back today and they’re all blurry. i had it set to the wrong shutter speed :(
I just seen this camera for sale for $200 on amazon. Now I’m here learning if it’s worth it
DomVHarris thanks for having a look! Don’t forget to factor cost of developing these photos now! I don’t shoot with it as much as I’d like.
Chris Gardiner Photography how much is Film, and developing photos? (On average)
@@TheDomoniqueharris $12-$16 if you want them scanned and uploaded.
@@amanir1387 where do you get yours scanned and uploaded at?
@@DH_Artist local shop, Color Services in Santa Barbara.
I found one long ago but and it came with everything but what type of flim does it need?
it uses standard 35mm film. Google image search for "35mm film" and it's the roll you'll recognize and quite likely the only film that would still be relatively easy to find these days in all but specialty shops. (i would think anyways, I don't pay too much attention to that).
Good luck and enjoy!
Isn't the knob with the R on the front of the camera the film rewind release?
So it is! haha. thanks for your attention to detail. when I made this video I hadn't rewound a roll in probably eight or more years so I was a bit rusty as it would appear.
+Chris Gardiner Photography Its cool. Its a lovely camera man very nice.
U can still get batterys
can you take double exposure with this camera?
sooo i just bought one and it’s missing the asa sticker… should i just guess? or is there a way to figure that out
Sorry that is not lens release,;That R button is for rewinding your film!
R for Film rewind
2:14 does the light meter require batteries?
And what kind of batteries?
Hi Ji, Yes it does.
Good Gremlin Pictures mentioned above something about this battery ID "Its the MRB625" I've not gotten batteries for this camera, so I can't verify. Thanks for watching and for your comment though!
I use the wein cell 625. Works well
What if your f stop is 1.8 how will the focus ring work? How will you know what's going to be in focus?
YAHOO the focus ring will always work as per usual regardless of aperture. when you're wide open on any lens the main difference is your depth of field preview button won't appear to do anything when you hit it.
Chris Gardiner Photography thanks. I'm kinda confused like for example if the aperture is 16, from 2m to infinity it will be in focus, but how about if the f stop is 1.8 cause there are no markings at 1.8. Sorry i'm new to film haha. Thanks!
Oh I see what you mean better now. so there are a few things you can do - understanding hyperfocal distance is very useful. there are many free phone apps that can calculate that stuff for you. also - the depth of field preview button when pressed will show you what will be in focus in the viewfinder before you expose the frame. so if you press the DOF preview and it's blurry - it will be blurred on your photo too.very handy tool.
i have a question to ask. do i have to hold down the Aperture preview / lens release and adjust the meter to the middle and take a picture or should i not do that?
are you using this exact camera?
does a OM-1n counts?
well, i never seem to have the battery i need to keep the meter working, so I can't test it for you right now - but - the meter should work without holding the aperture preview.
The best way to test it would be composing a scene with light that won't change (like point straight at a lightbulb indoors, locked off on a tripod), choose an aperture that isn't wide open - and then checking to see if the meter changes at all when you press and release the aperture preview. Otherwise, I'll see if I can get a battery for mine and test out my theory for you and update here when I can.
Good luck and thanks for your comment and for watching!
the manuel for the camera doesn't say to hold down the preview button. It only says to pick your settings, ASA(ISO), shutter speed, and aperture and it should work. I very recently got the my OM1 and haven't had a roll developed yet so I can't say for certain if you do or do not have to hold it down. All I can say is nowhere in the manuel does it say to hold down the preview.
@@Nathan-un6rb If you hold down the aperature preview button the light meter does adjust. So if you're using the light meter in your camera, make sure you use it. If you don't have a battery in your camera to use the light meter it won't make a difference either way.
I have an om10 and the lady at the camera store told me to use auto mode, the aperture has to be set at 22 which is highlighted in green on my lens. Is she correct? Bc I feel like if I’m shooting in dark places with f22 the pictures will just be black
thats a good question,
it makes sense to me though I haven't tried it. i tend to use the light meter and adjust manually.
its not that you're setting to f22, it's likely that the lens needs access to the full range of aperture adjustments, and if it were set to something like f/8 it wouldn't be able to stop down any further when it has to. just guessing again though, worth a try on a few shots anyways.
happy shooting!!
can you shoot video with it
Sure can. It does about 1fps, and only about 30 seconds max recording time.
hahaha.
i am new to this stuff so i actaully can't tell if you're joking :( and do you know if any 35mm film cameras can actually shoot video? like the cannon ae-1 or that cheap nikon one? thanks for the reply!
oh my bad, I saw your channel and I thought you were joking too. But yes, I'm joking - 1 fps is about as fast as you can film advance and fire a frame and about 30 frames to a roll of film, so that was my idea of a joke.
To be more serious - you wont find video on any 35mm film SLR. Video capture only made it's debut to SLRs once they were recording in digital.
If you want to record video onto 35mm film it's going to look more like an older fashioned movie camera than an SLR and I couldn't even guess at a price for that either but not likely to be cheap. Good luck Jake!
hahaha okay thanks Chris!
jai la même apareille mais il marche pas si il ya quelqun qui le veut
the film release not lens. release is it not
Would be a good idea to learn the camera before trying to talk about it
A bit Sour today Peter? If it’s about the film rewind, I got it all sorted pal! I prefaced the video by explaining how I had it jammed and out of commission for a few years so the film rewind would be the one piece I hadn’t used in the longest time. Everything else is valid. Thanks anyway for watching and leaving a comment though! Have a great day.
If you want to know how to operate the Olympus OM1, watch ANY other video.
I still dont fucking geti itttt
