  • The friendship between a boy and his dog is as old as time and dogs and boys, but I believe one still reigns supreme: the 1954 series succinctly titled… Lassie. In a time when achieving TV greatness meant lasting six seasons, Lassie aired 19, with nearly 600 wholesome, charming episodes for man and beast to enjoy. So why did that winning streak not make it to 20? And just why is the beloved Lassie not who we think she - or should I say he - really is?
    Well I’m your host Nostalgic Nick with these answers and more as we delve into the history and secrets of this sweet series. If you dig this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up and don’t forget to subscribe so Timmy will know when our next deep dive begins… but Without further ado, let’s head back to a simpler time…

    As a young kid in the 50's, my family spent a couple years renting a farm house. We had a collie called Barney and he and I spent many a day running all over! I loved that dog and was heartbroken when we had to move and leave him behind. I'm an old man now, but will never forget Barney.

    My family started our pet owning career with collies, primarily because my Granny bred them. Our two collies were tricolors, not sables, and their names were Lady and Cadpuppy. I still remember those two fondly. My hsuband and I, on the other hand, have had greyhounds for 20+ years, and have now moved on to pound mutts, since retired greyhounds have become a bit hard for us to find of late. But for me, it all started with collies.

That was one of the biggest & most beautiful Rough Collie’s Id ever seen! I think they did mention that the dog was a boy & which name, but I can no longer remember his name! My favorite episode was consequently the very last episode! Pamelyn Ferden played a deaf girl on the show and she had a surgery to get back her hearing. But it didn't seem to work. Dejected she goes home and is out looking for Lassie and can't find her when suddenly she hears a tiny woof! And louder, WOOF! LASSIE!!! She screams! And it was, Lassie running to her and she's crying and I'm crying and I suppose everyone watching was crying! She could hear. I'm hearing impaired myself and that episode stuck with me. I never got a Lassie ring, I didn't need one, I had the real thing, Lassie, or should I say a pup of one of the TV show mate Lassies. Lassie was a real lady's man apparently, or at least the one who fathered mine. I cant remember witch dog was the father but we named my pup Master. He was my best friend. My father worked in the TV industry and that's how my dad got Master. My parents got him for me to help me recover from major heart surgery when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Master was just what I needed to help me heal. I do miss him but life goes on and I'm quite sure so will the name Lassie.

    It was 1956 when my 10 year old self - and family - moved from the city to a farm in the country. The one thing we took with - Lassie, on TV. Our closest neighbors also had a 10 year old son AND a collie - just like Lassie - named Lady. We lived there nearly a year, then, like all the years before and all to come, we moved. Lots of houses, trailers, tents (a few months one Fall) and even an abandoned shack in 1958, while Dad was in Vietnam. But having Lassie as my neighbor and pal was the best.

    I remember meeting (one) of the Lassies at Eastpoint Shopping center on North Point Road in Baltimore County around '57 or '58. Rudd Weatherwax was with Lassie and I was able to talk to him. Then, I received my best gift and friend, my German Shepard Dog for my 13th birthday. (I loved Rin Tin Tin.)

    Loved them àll had a small mixed breed called lassie she had 79 puppies in her lifetime in the early to mid 60s everyone all got good homes thanks to my mother and father and price see back then no one wanted females so the sign read females 2$ yes that's right two dollars and males 4 dollars cause they were mutts tippy one of her puppies was closes to looking like a collie. I miss those times and Mom and Dad and all my pets. I hope their all with my parents as I will be someday.

    We got our first TV in 1955 and I remember Lassie from the git-go. If I remember right, Grandpa drowned in the pond, at least that's how they played it on the show. A rather profound experience for this young boy. Yes, Lassie was great with lots good moral lessons sprinkled in the plot lines. And no, I never had a collie.

    Yes I feel Timmy and Lassie was very cute while Jeff's Collie may've been just alright. It was also interesting to see Tom Rettig in "The 5,000 fingers of Dr.T."on TNT and with his lassie follow-up going to the commercials also to see how when the actor who played Jeff was the star. Also Joey Vieira who played Gramps had passed and so this was added to the show and when Timmy and his Parents showed up and jeff and his Mom moved and Lassie got to stay by an agreement.Also how interesting this was for me to first see and learn on a Nick@Nite Sequence on Dec.31,1991.

      @@QueensLadyDay I disagree with the way the transition went! Our pets are part of our family and unless someone can no longer physically take care of them they shouldn't discard part of their family. It would had been just as touching if they showed Lassie had puppies and Jeff gave one of them to Timmy and then Lassie leaves with Jeff and his mom. What child that loves dogs wouldn't love to have a puppy from their favorite dog?

    • @QueensLadyDay
      @QueensLadyDay Před rokem

      @@JustMe-ec2ph This is TV LAND! Tommy Retting was too big for the role and they wanted a "cute kid" (Jon Provost) to take over. Lassie already had pups...season 1- episode 10.. The move to the "big city" was sad but perfect. Small apartments don't suit grown collies.

    • @JustMe-ec2ph
      @JustMe-ec2ph Před rokem

      @@QueensLadyDay Did I say anything about Retting leaving the show? Nope!
      I said how I felt about the transition.
      So, from season 1 to season whatever it was when Retting left Lassie couldn't have more puppies? LOL
      Please don't give me any excuses on why it's okay to depart with a family member unless the person could no longer care for them. Dogs and cats sure can't understand all those good reasons why their owners no longer have them.
      When I had my first dog living on my own and the person I was renting from decided she didn't want pets anymore, not from anything my dog had done! Her daughter told me she hated dogs so when I was told that did I give my dog away? Heck, NO! I bought a 8 wide trailer so no one could ever tell me again I couldn't keep a member of my family.
      They could had written the story where they would take pets where Jeff and his mother moved. After all it's TV LAND! Surely there are parks in a big city where Lassie could get exercise.
      It might not be real but TV shows/movies doesn't mean they can't send the message on what's the right thing to do.

      I saw some of them. Didn't realize the show lasted so long. I watch but don't like as much when they have dogs going on their own even though it's great they have them helping people. No child or adult should think a dog can do that well on their own. They should all have the love and protection of a forever family.
