@SJones My knowledge of Poe is restricted to the classics. The Raven, murders in the rue morgue,pit and the pendulum,tell tale heart,masque of the red death. And I couldn't use a Ren pun with Poe.
Fisher "Losing it" is the Base Track for this Re-Take (but it's also heavily cut EDM Song)...
Anything that says Re-Take is a rap on a song that wasn't a rap, anything else is played, produced & made by Ren.
Love Music 1, 2, 3, is the most underrated raps he's done.

Fisher is an aussie house DJ and producer who won a grammy for the original track in 2018. I had never heard of the guy until this retake.

If you want to get to know Ren, then his song Hi Ren is literally an introduction to how he got to where he is now. It might help give you some context to the variety of songs you have ahead of you with him.
As a bit of background, Ren spent most of his life chronically ill and bedbound, while also being treated for psychosis. But most of his symptoms were actually being caused by an undiagnosed autoimmune disease. Lyme Disease has left him with brain damage and severe chronic health issues which are currently being treated in Canada (he has a go fund me on his Community tab). He has PTSD from being gaslit by doctors who dismissed his physical symptoms as psychosomatic for so many years. (This is explored a bit in Sick Boi.)
He's had to leave his home, family, and bandmates to undergo 6 months of intensive treatment just at the time when his music is blowing up.

I don't have a problem with the angle 🤣 bit of a cheeky chap isn't he ? Red light green light is a squid game reference and the number on his tracksuit was the number of days we were in lockdown in the UK. The trilogy Jenny Screech and Violets tales are what Ren calls bardcore, musical story telling but I can't give it away you need to listen to it.

I'm still finding new gems every day. Only encountered him theough "Hi Ren" which is a must BTW. And I've never been so surprised, blown away and endeared to an artist ever.
Apart from Hi Ren my fees are 'chalk outlines' ( live version) for his singing voice. 'Humble' for something different yet again. 'I shot the sherif, road to zion and hip hop' from his busking days, 'love music' parts 2 and 3 and 'money game' parts 1 and 2 for some reality checks on society.
But I'm still digging and still finding more...ans still saying.."thisnis my favourite yet" to all of them.

Ren was bed bound and stuck in his room for years with his misdiagnosed illness... He watched a lot of tv and movies and I would imagine read a lot of books and listened to a lot of music ... Hence the
originally from wales, moved to Brighton at an early age, got a record deal with Sony who then dropped him when he became ill, originally diagnosed with ME but later was found to have lymes disease! He was big on the busking circuit in Brighton and coalbed with a lot of other singers eventually joining a band called the Big Push He's currently in Canada getting 6 months of treatment but has pre recorded a number of tracks to release while hes over there, next track drops later this month on his birthday! Thats a brief history songs like Hi Ren go deeper into his illness and there is an underlining theme in many songs about it and his treatment/mis treatment. The thing with Ren is he's an independent, he makes music for himself and his fans, you never know what style he's going to pull out of his tool bag next, all you know is every one is a banger!
I can see your starting to grasp the accent now, you have a new subscriber ;) Oh his live versions......there completely different! you've already done Genesis so check the live version, on a roof top, an acoustic guitar and a rude boy kick to his vocals......it like many of his live versions feels completely different! Oh and check out Ren & Liv Sangster live where the pair of them just jam and the song just goes all over the place as they freestyle it, no ones reacted to this but it's not rap so not sure if your ready to go that deep down the rabbit hole just yet ;)

Can't wait to see the future reactions. I myself have said "this might be my favourite about 15 songs from ren by now". Very nice reaction. I think there is also beauty in enjoying the music and also in disecting the lyrics. It just comes down to each listener's preference. There is no right or wrong way to do it. People mostly have stopped analysing lyrics because very few songs nowadays are worth the effort as they are quite poor when it comes to depth, ideas , lyricism etc

He has said that Chilli peppers and Eminem are 2 artists he admires, as well as Fat Boy Slim . He has successfully tapped into and experimented with many genres . He is a chameleon, and a bad-assed guitarist as well!
Fisher, as far as I can tell, is an artist that just mixes beats. He doesn't rap or write lyrics. He just clips samples and mixes beats, and Losing It is not a name that Ren came up with. It's the name Fisher gave the beat that Ren used for this track.

In his music he references everyone from zack de la roach, Kurt cobain, the beastie boys, Leonard Cohen, eminem, plan b, and many others, and just listen to his intros on guitar in jenny and screech and hi ren, it's pure django reinhardt. This guy is a god dam genius. A chameleon. And he was born in Wales but lives in Bristol in England now I think.

Fisher's Losing It is an EDM track with no words, except Losing It. So Ren put his own words over the track for his "Fisher retake." And he's from Wales, but has lived most of his adult life in Brighton, England. And has been in Canada all year getting treatment for his Lyme disease that was misdiagnosed for years and years.

Jenny and Screech (full version) is actually three songs, each one performed live and in one take. It's about how bad decisions lead to bad consequences. It's a tragic tale, but the delivery is a masterful performance. It's not Hip Hop. It's a bardic style performance where he tells a story with his acoustic guitar.
Also, if you really want an homage to the Beastie Boys, Ren made one. It's called What You Want.
