    Why does everybody seem to keep cutting one of the most important dialogs of the show short?
    Legasov: Why?
    For the same reason our reactors do not have containment buildings around them, like those in the West.
    For the same reason we don't use properly enriched fuel in our cores.
    For the same reason we are the only nation that builds water-cooled, graphite-moderated reactors with a positive void coefficient.
    It's cheaper.

      @apollomars1678 Před 4 lety +17

      because the american NATO bastards opressed sovjet economy 1970-1985 so much, that we had to use dangerous nuclear plants to create enough electricity for our citizen.
      the containment buildings in the west are now outdated, badly fixed and not shutdowned for economic reasons.
      because these plants creat money, while they work (like chernobyl) and the nuclear lobby claimed, that their reactors would work "forever" or at least some hundred years and they worked more like 40-50 years, because of the infrastructure of the reactor core, the thing, that can open up and creat chernobyl, get small holes over time, that can make the core explode under unforseen big pressure (like chernobyl) and this actual happend some times allready in belgium and the cotainment building had holes too, so we ere able to see the radiation leaking out and be contained later with "more water" to fix the problem.

      If the tips were not graphite, it also would have been ok. The point of the show is, there was an entire litany of incompetencies, and any one of them fixed would have avoided the issue. But that's how incompetencies run rampant. Most of the time, someone stops a disaster happening before it happens, and the corruption that lead to that danger in the first place is ignored, until it can't be ignored.

    • @MollymaukT
      @MollymaukT Před 3 lety +1

      It would still happen. The tips being made of graphite was a bit of an oversimplification. Actually there was a full rod made of graphite attached to the boron cooling rods so when they were drawn the graphite would take its place and acts as a moderator (because otherwise the rod channels fill up with water and reactivity still goes down), but they were slightly shorter than the reactor itself and pushing AZ-5 dislocated then all simultaneously creating a gap and the difference in pressure exploded the core. Once those 200 rods were removed the reactor was doomed

      @TheDrNinjaman Před 4 lety +5

      While I agree the firefighters were heroes who did not deserve their fate, what are you talking about isotopes still radiating neutron flux from the inside? They received a fatal dose of radiation due to working in close proximity to the contents of a reactor core, but that would have been external source radiation. Maybe they inhaled some particles, I suppose, but documentaries about Chernobyl have made it clear the bodies of the injured fire fighters were not actually radioactive. The metal caskets and burial in cement was merely due to a misconception held by the people at the time, and unfortunately still today, apparently. Exposure to gamma radiation does not make things radioactive. Unless the firefighters inhaled huge quantities of radioactive particles, and one would assume they had respirators as standard firefighting equipment, they would have just been normal corpses.

    "We did everything right "
    Ironically they too botched it. But it shouldn't have been a situation with which they could. They were cogs in a machine that was "too big to fail "

      In this particular case they did everything right. Az5 was meant to stop a nuclear meltdown. However this button was the actual detonator but they didn't knew. They did everything they could. They even open the water gates manually. Terrifying knowing they would die anyway. Real heroes gave their lives and save God knows how many. Because Dyatlov wasn't satisfied with the results...

      @@alHollandi_1998 olld comment but i strongly recommend watching the podcast on the show, the guys they had in shift were NOT the primary operators, they let the reactor stall, panicked and jumpstarted it. I'm not versed enough to give an indepth explanation other than the summery

    Верно. Разумности совсем не было. Одни лишь пустые амбиции. А АЭС не то место, где нужно работать амбициозным товарищам.
    Там должны работать уравновешенные, разумные и супер ответственные люди!

    I think some details are wrong. Diatlov, chief-engineer of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, says in his last Interview in the year 1994, that there was no panic in the control room and he did not have to give words twice. There also is no delivery that Diatlov was angry or shouting at any time. Because of the movie in some scenes there is more "free rollplay" than in reality was.

      If an cief engineer in an Nuclear power plant would act like the actor in this movie or in the other scene plays that were made about that situation that night in Chernobyl power plant i think the other members of the control room would call the security.

      @anny791 It is well known that Dyatlov yelled at and threatened his colleagues, especially those on lower positions. He received multiple warnings for it. He was very hotheaded and abused his position occasionally. Nobody was blind and sometimes people would question his motives and actions. Not everything was black and white in the Soviet Union. There were many gray areas of their own
