      when i taught english in Akita shi Akita ken (largest city in that northern prefecture) i would immediately plop my backpack down at the front door of the grocery store, dept store what hav u knowing it would still be there when i returned from not having to lug it around,; always warmed my heart.... Also dont hav to lock ur bike up, it will not be stolen in a world where high-trust society has all but vanished from the west, shout out to Japan for keeping culture homogeneity 💖

      Japanese culture is for Japanese. As foreigner, it's a strong learning curve, and they do not take the general western ideals of "stealing" by our wonderful diversity imports since the 19th century, as something to be hand waggled away. Because they don't want to destroy their culture and heritage.

      I've seen people leave their phone and wallet lying on the table when they used the restroom in Tokyo, it's pretty normal there.
      But yeah, I would never do that her in Amsterdam, I never leave my bike unattended without locking it.

    As a Dutch person, I enjoyed this! Nice job. About rare Japanese products: They are available here I think mostly because there is a Japanese expat community living in Amsterdam hence they want/can afford high quality Japanese products. The Dutch "ninjas" also take icecreams! This happens mostly close to the seaside though ;)

    I would love to ride around Tokyo on a bike but not knowing the etiquette and rules, when to ride on the sidewalk, when to ride on the road, makes it a bit of a non-starter.
    Luckily public transport is super efficient in Tokyo, it would be nice to be able to do it in Kyoto though as the busses tend to get stuck in traffic a lot.
    We did bike through the countryside near Kurashiki ... that was super nice, got a bit lost, but it all worked out in the end.
    the bike rental people, an older couple, didn't speak English and we didn't speak Japanese, but we managed to understand each other nonetheless. They refused to let us leave unless I wore a hat to protect me form the sun :)
    It's kinda funny how Japanese mom's bikes and Dutch oma bikes have a lot in common

  • @TheMennomilist
    @TheMennomilist Před 5 měsíci +2

    Many people struggle to pronounce Dutch names, but for future references, Rijke rhymes with Bike so it is more like "Rike" how it is pronounced. :) (My mom is half Dutch).
    I loved this video and am so very sorry that things were stolen there of yours. That is awful. I have never tried any drugs or alcohol so I too would not want to have those cookies. You did fine in not trying them.
    That is so interesting how Japanese products are sold through the Netherlands on the road and are a good quality.
    There are definitely racists in the Netherlands, but I am so glad you did not receive bad treatment at all. Most Dutch people are very respectful and enjoy learning about cultures.

    as a drunken pot smoking Canadian that is not used to bicycles everywhere, I almost got killed by bicycles everywhere lol... entirely my fault, I of course would.look for cars but then would forget there's also bike lanes packed with people driving around.
    it was also shocking to see so many Dutch people asking if I was ok due to drinking too much -- in Canada, I don't think I've ever been asked if I was ok. don't get the wrong idea I drink maybe once or twice a year, and am not a troublesome drunk or anything.
    The Dutch people are very kind.
    edit; Amsterdam is expensive but I would have thought Tokyo would be worse.
