During the new year's holiday, I went back to my parent’s house and I decided to clean my room using the Konmari method along with my own method too.
Actually, I cleaned it last year as well, but I found that I still have many things.

I've gradually started to declutter lately. I filled 9 large trashbags with things I didn't use or care about. It was a wild experience finding out how little I really need.

@@murielhecquet8823 My older parents just went through this 'decluttering' when it was time for them to downsize belongings and move to a smaller house in Florida {a popular state for retirees in USA}. As a result they have given a lot of their stuff to me to own. Their stuff is in my house now and has become my clutter. I feel guilty getting rid of it, especially since they have asked me not to do so.

Hello mr. Aki. Im a mom of 2 from the philippines. I like your videos about minimalism. Im also a minimalist & environmentalist ( still struggling with the latter). My special daughter taught me (unconsciously). Because she needs physical therapy at home the doctor told us to have a large space and to keep away all things that could harm her. So we remove most of our things. Not only do we have more room for her to crawl but there's less clutter and more air to circulate. Less cleaning and no need for fan/aircon. Our goal this yr is to lessen or even stop buying things except for food & other essentials. We try to reuse, repair, recycle what we already have & try to find alternatives or borrow from people we know rather than buy. We either donate or sell the things we declutter. We lessen the things we threw as much as possible coz according to an environmentalist the things we declutter/threw away did'nt disappear but still existed somewhere in the planet. What's important is not to declutter but to stop buying things.

    • @jangtheconqueror
      @jangtheconqueror Před měsícem

The last part is very important and I'm glad you say that. Once we make something, it has consumed resources for its materials, transportation, storage, etc. So even if we were to destroy all of our garbage, or send it off into space, we still damaged the environment in the process. It really is important to stop buying things, buy things secondhand, and be more content with living with less and focusing more on the things that bring us true joy.

I used to be an impulse buyer. I would buy things just to make me feel better if I got depressed. These "things" didn't make me feel any better, they just added chaos to clutter, I came across minimalism after reading Marie Kondo 's books. I came to realise I didn't need as much.
I still regularly declutter and I feel more content with what I have 😊

Writing from USA, this is June 2022 & we're still in the pandemic.
I've culled my bookshelves several times, thinking, "Oh, yes, I want to read or reread this in the future"...
    Well, then the pandemic happened
and I had plenty of time to read, but I didn't even read 1 book !
It was much easier to donate books after that -- realizing I'm not going to ever read most of my books.

I like how you present the KonMari method and minimalism. Many people who make videos about these subjects present themselves as better for doing them. Instead your videos show how you may feel better and have a better life without as many things. The difference is your meekness in presentation.

I’m in the process off minimizing and this really put me at ease. One additional tip I might add is to turn things into art! My grandma made me a quilt with T-shirt’s from my college career, clubs, events, achievements, now I can use them rather them sit in boxes collecting dust. I’ve also had ideas to make memory shrines. Dedicated areas where I can revisit all of my little trinkets and sentimental items that I can’t yet part with. This helps me avoid the toy story effect where I feel as though the items are being disrespected being unappreciated in boxes. Lastly I have begun fire ceremonies. When I have something very meaningful to me that I no longer wish to carry I have begun burning them, this is similar to a flag ceremony for US flags. I feel this process honors the memories and feels better than hocking something sentimental into a trash bag.

I have gotten back into decluttering lately. I don't usually use the KonMari method, but her book is still what started this journey for me in 2016. I went back to almost hoarding recently, so now I've been decluttering and it feels so good.
I like your technique of envisioning the room first. It was hard for me to do when I was drowning in stuff, but that I'm closer to minimalism again, it's getting easier. I tend to be overwhelmed by clutter quite easily, so I want to be more like an extreme minimalist (though not too extreme) so I can take care of my remaining things without being overwhelmed. So thank you for the inspiration!

Thank you for the tips you gave in this video, it was truly helpful. When I was a kid I used to collect many coins and place them in odd places so that I could make a game to find them as treasure once I forget where I put them. Fast forward to some years later I did a clean up and the accumulated amount of money surprised me( it was a lot than I thought it would be). However I decided to donate it, and how it had helped other people and looking at their happy faces: truly sparked me joy even if it's for a little while. Hope this was helpful aki

One thing I will say about clothes that don't fit but used to, it's helpful to put them up in a suitcase if you're someone who frequently fluctuates in weight, like I am. I once lost weight, bought new clothes and got rid of the clothes that didn't fit anymore, just to gain the weight back. Then I had to buy more clothes.

This also makes it hard to clean and keep my space organized. This could also help me find things that I do like but donr wear anymore because they have gotten lost in my closet.. I always try to only buy things I really like when i go shopping (and mainly second hand) but i still have a hard time of getting rid of older stuff which makes my closet become overwhelming

I have been decluttering my bedroom for weeks now. What I do is I start with one portion of the room for a day, e.g. my wardrobe or my desk because doing it all in one day is super tiring and I can easily get distracted without finishing anything. For coins I find in random places, what I do is keep them according to denominations in separate jars. I live in the Philippines, and there's this church we go to once a year. They have this huge basket where you can get repurposed PET bottles and they only accept 25 cent coins as donations in the PET bottles. For the others, you can also keep your coins, organize them and deposit to your bank account. It feels like having *magic money*.
Thank you Samurai Matcha for this great video. I now have more ideas about decluttering and hopefully find the motivation to finish this tedious task. :)))))

I think getting rid of sentimental childhood toys is especially hard for people who grew up with movies like Toy Story 😂. I really like what you say in the video: "Memories are not in things; they will always be in your heart." Whether you get rid of something or not, it will always be part of your history. I think a good technique is to visualize where the item would be most useful right now. You may imagine an item being recycled into something new, or an old toy being played with by a child instead of collecting dust in your attic.

7:36 I had to look twice on the item I saw there. I could not believe my eyes at first when I distinguised the $500 COP coin. I have not seen all your content yet, I will take a look and see what other Colombian memories are around your vids. Greetings from Colombian teacher :)

For coins, I make a point to use them as much as possible when I go out to the store to buy things that I need. During my first declutter, I put the accumulated coins into a jar, & whenever I went out to the store, I would take a few & make a point to use them with paper cash as well. I was worried about burdening the cashier at first, but I realized that if I take a few each time, then they are more than happy to count a dollar or two of coins. Eventually they were all used up, & I ended up becoming more mindful of the importance of money in this way. Marie Kondo also says in her first book to make the policy for coins "Into my wallet!" I just followed what she said but used them up quickly over time! I hope this can help in some way or give some inspiration for what to do, as I know coins in Japan are so much more widely used. I did the same when I moved back to the U.S. from Japan without too much trouble though : )

In airports there are usually boxes where you can drop international coins in

Thank you for this. This will help me to declutter a lot from my room this weekend. I really appreciate it.
Also, the picture idea is great for sentimental. Then you don’t have physical baggage.

I know of this method, but have not put it into practice as of yet. Hopefully, soon. I loved seeing the Pokémon Cards, my son would have a field day just going through them all. He is quite the Sensei master when it comes to that game and has been to many tournaments. Anyway, loved seeing your little visitor he was so cute.

I keep all my cards and photos etc organized in an accordion file folder. That way they're easily stored in one spot and not all over the place. I also scan a lot of documents and papers and put them in my Google Drive instead of having the physical clutter in my house.
