  • Batman has featured many versions of the villain Clayface. DC Comics boasts upwards of 8 different Clayfaces. However some fans feel that the best Clayface doesn't come from the comics. Where does he hail from? Some say the animated tv series The Batman. This Clayface was Ethan Bennett, a police officer and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. His transformation at the hands of the Joker was one the series highlights and his arc stuck with many. We discuss Ethan and whether he is indeed the best Clayface here on Casually Comics!

@@JanFWehThey have similar origins, but they diverge when it comes to virtually everything else. Ethan had shape shifting powers, Two-Face has burn scars and a complex when it comes to duality and chance. Ethan is a revenge driven monster who wants to kill the man who changed him, Two-Face is a mob boss that is constantly arguing against himself. Yeah, they come from similar backrounds, but their goals, actions, abilities, how they were turned into monsters and even how far gone they are all different. Plus there's already a lot of characters that are practically copycats in the actual DC comics too. Like the multiple Batman villains that are all pretty much knockoffs of him, Clue Master, that one Flash villain with a freeze gun whose name escapes me. Most comic book characters are similar to other characters in one way or another, but there's usually more under the hood to help these characters differentiate themselves.

Hot take, but I think prefer A Matter of Family to the Emmy winning Robin’s Reckoning. A) we don’t have to waste time with a framing device and it’s more concise overall. B) the Haley and John Grayson characters are merged so that Zucco threatens Grayson directly which makes everything more personal. C) Zucco is given more depth when he insinuates he accidentally killed his father in a knife throwing routine gone wrong.
We also get Kevin Conroy as John Grayson and Mark Hamill as Tony Zucco which is fun. The parents death scene is arguably more graphic than the BTAS version. Don’t get me wrong, I love Robin’s Reckoning, I just think this episode is really good too.

Sometimes it is really just a slip up and it makes you feel so much worse when you've worked hard on something and the moment you make a mistake it's like everyone looses trust in you again. More The Batman would be great, maybe on its version of Batgirl and why it works for her to appear before Robin? Maybe on some of its one shot villains like D.A.V.E. or Maxie Zeus or Everywhere Man?

I know that people really like the Mr. Freeze from BTAS, but I think The Batman's Freeze, as a purely villainous character, works well too, from what I remember. The episode of his origin was written by Greg Weissman, Young Justice creator, among other projects.

Even though I like freeze from BTAS the most
I really do like this version of freeze as well because he legit has no chill! Eh? Eeehhh?
But seriously my favorite part of this freeze is that his origin story is thanks to batman
In this series batman accidentally created Mr freeze and offered to help but freeze basically wanted his revenge and for his case specifically I think he had a right to it

Ethan probably is my favorite version of Clayface. He was my introduction to the character as a kid and has the most emotional and compelling story of any Clayface in my opinion. Also, could you do an episode about The Riddler from this series?

The Batman was the first superhero animated show I ever saw, and Ethan was my favorite character in that first season his friendship with Bruce helped humanized the billionaire. I was heartbroken as a kid when I saw him transform into Clayface and when tried to be better only to relapse that was just a gut punch for me.
I was so happy when he was finally cured and fixed his friendship Bruce.

I actually find The Batman season 4 to be one of the more emotional seasons. Riddlers Revenge is absolutely devastating. As is the moment where Tony Zucco reveals he accidentally killed his own father! Also that moment between Alfred and Lucius on the snowy balcony in The Joining always makes me tear up when they talk about young Bruce 😭

The Batman was interesting because it started off as a greedy corporation move to make more toys with all the gadget/costumes reared Batman but it slowly kept on showing a more mature and nuanced storytelling with real progression throughout the seasons. Ethan was one of my favorite characters in the show, hands down. I remember when the episode came out, it was so shocking in a very thrilling and engaging way

This video actually helped resolve an issue I had with Clayface back in the day. As a kid watching this series as it came out (pre-streaming and I didn’t have a DVR) the episode where Ethan posed as Solomon Grundy always felt out of character for me and I chalked it up to bad writing. However, after watching this video did I learn about the episode “Meltdown”, which I never watched. Thank you for filling in that gap.

For weeks I thought Ethan Bennett died horrifically melting to death, and i was traumatized, lol. What did I miss?" It was so rewarding when I finally got to see the full finale in all its glory.

This is one of the many practical reasons why I like it when original and/or expy characters are put into an adaptation of a pre-existing thing as opposed to changing absolutely anything, especially sexual orientations nowadays, of a pre-existing character that's already in that thing and ruining them because of it.

Ethan is one of my favourite adaptations of clayface aside from Btas, there’s a beautiful sense of body horror from the origin episodes and I’d love to see more Batman villains either under a different context like Ethan or the og characters are played with in future adaptations. I hope we get to see Bennet and Yin again they were just great characters overall.
