Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn talking about working with Orbison during the Traveling Wilburys sessions were repeatedly shocked at the ease of his vocals being laid down. Several times they thought he was just mouthing the words as a warm up, then on the playback, it was a flawless full power song on the tape.
    He was special for sure.

Amber is describing what we who sing for a living do. We need to switch from chest to head, from low to high register, pretty much immediately. The best singers of pop music do this effortlessly. Why? Because they have been TRAINED that way.

Roy Orbison claimed in interviews that the lyrics for this song came to him in a dream; he wrote the music once he woke up. Typical of many Orbison songs, it's a heartbreaker: asleep at night is the only time he can be with the one he loves, as when he wakes up, she's gone.

In 1966 I had the pleasure of watching Roy Orbison sing this song live. It was in Lethbridge, AB, Canada. That was a day I will never forget because I took a 'first date' Adele to the concert with me. It was such a beautiful night, Adelle was flat out beautiful and attractive on every level... and I was nervous as hell not to screw the date up. I had never even seen her this close before, I had only passed her in the hallway at high school and as I recall I had never really noticed her before. Eventually I started hearing that she had eyes for me. And since that's always a welcome piece of gossip... I phoned her and asked her out. And 4 days later here we are. At the Roy Orbison concert.
We heard him actually sing all the way up into that "airy falsetto"... in real time. Holy shit, although it was in 'real time" it was also *unreal*... at the same time. Roy Orbison live was almost a "spiritual" event. Because at some point you start to realize that "I'll never get this opportunity again for the fest of my life to hear Roy Orbison sing 'live'. Sooo........ after the concert I just didn't know how to act with the lovely Adele... So
I took her home. Besides, I was bumming my dad's car and by then it was already ancient. So I took the beauty Adele home and I've never seen her since. I'm sure she's still a freakin' knockout though, LOL Sorry about the not-so-happy ending, but you know how it goes. You're the one freakin' out about it, not me. 🤣 😂 💗

Elvis might have been "big" of the 50s and 60s but to me, Roy Orbison was the greatest singer of our times. Even said, "he was the greatest singer. Why? He had a voice that could do vibrato and sustain the notes even as he changes the notes in the song. He can sustain the vibrato each time. That is what Wing Pegasus who can determine pitch of a voice. He claimed this man was "unique" and strong voice to maintain his talent in vibratos. I love his voice and the higher the notes go you hear his unique talent that not many singers can do what he does. Check out "Blue Angel" as well as the song he wrote that Linda Ronstadt made it her own, "Blue Bayou." Wow - check how Roy Orbison wrote it and sang it to perfection.

To stand there and hardly move or open his mouth to produce that sound particularly when he was young was magical. Never will be another like Roy Kelton Orbison. You must be pretty good to upsatge the Beatles for them to ask him to "go home Yankee"!!. Of course it was all in good faith, but for the crowd in England to keep asking Roy Orbison for encores and forget about the Beatles who had been on before is pretty special. This concert was recorded in Jan' 1988. Roy died that December. Musicians who had recorded with Roy, and Elvis P' play on this: James Burton, Jerry Sheff, Ron Tutt, whom you are less likely to know, by sight, rather than by ear. A number of friends and admirers joined: Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne on guitars, Tom Waits -keyboards -and a trio of Women on vocals, talents all: Bonnie Raitt, k.d. Lang, Jennifer Warnes. Roy recorded with the Traveling Wilbury's in April-May of that year, the album came out in October, so, he knew success in his final months with us. He worked on his last solo album, "Mystery Girl" during his final months, with his friends co-writing and playing on tracks. He died of a heart attack, at only 52 years.
"In Dreams" was from 1963. It was a top 10 hit. Roy toured England, with The Beatles as his opening band. The Lads were all fans of Orbison. (Why George H' could call him into the Wilbury's.)"In Dreams" returned to the minds of many, when it was featured in David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" in 1986, a disturbing misery into the dark personal corners of American small town life.

This was an amazing concert just one year before his very untimely death. At that time this song was over 20 years old and Roy just crushes it. Of course that’s also the best backing band ever created, just ridiculous. I have this stored on my DVR. ✌️

Definitely “I drove all night” ❣️❣️Blew me away the first time I heard it. “In Dreams “is my favorite song of the Legendary Roy Orbinson. One of the greatest, and most iconic voices of all time.♥️ The Bee Gees my favorite band of all time . Barry spoke a lot of the influence Roy Orbinson had on them. There will never be another three part harmony like them; and their songwriting is pure brilliance ❣️❣️🎤🎸🎶🎵

This was a tribute concert for Roy called "A Black and White Night". You need to find it as a whole concert and watch it. There are some Huge artists performing with him and they all admitted they were starstruck and really nervous about performing with him. One Crazy fact is that there was a big 5.9 earthquake the morning after this concert. The building the video and audio recordings were in was damaged burying the tapes. When the rubble was cleared the recordings were not damaged at all.

Ahhhh, my favourite Roy Orbison song! In Dreams parted with that voice is ethereal. It transports me to another world. The song is featured in a film by David Lynch called 'Blue Velvet'. The dream like quality of the song juxtaposed with the dark subject matter gives me chills. The studio version of In Dreams is worth a listen too.

"Pretty Woman" is more famous. Also, "Cryin" is amazing. He did a version with kd lang, two voices that were made for each other. She did a solo version that I prefer. You need to react to her a lot more. "Constant Craving" is one of her absolute best. She has done some country songs in her own style. Check out "Trail of Broken Hearts" and "Pulling Back the Reins." She's also covered "Crazy" by Patsy Cline who was a big influence. Live or recorded, she's gold. As flawless a singer as I've ever heard.

I totally agree with you about KD Lamb's version. The duet is crazy good, but I feel like KD holds back in the duet. Her solo version, especially at the tribute show, was heartbreakingly beautiful and soul stirring.

This is from a recorded concert, A Black and White Night, done sometime in 1987. Everyone in the band are famous in their own right: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Brown, Tom Waits, J.D. Souther (You're Only Lonely). The lead guitarist on the more rockabilly songs was James Burton, who was the guitarist for Ricky Nelson; then Elvis. The background singers were already listed by Stefani.

Roy’s songs speak to the soul. They’re either reaching down to the depths of our pain in a love that’s been lost, or he’s taking us to the heights of ecstasy in a love that’s been won or redeemed. Either way, no matter what human experience you’re going through, Roy makes every word count.

Personally, this is my all time favorite Roy Orbison song. Not only does he show his incredible range, but he also revolutionizing the structure of the song. There's no regular chorus, or refrain. His voice is just constantly rising. To be fair, as wonderful as his voice is in this video, its even more amazing as a younger man. Magical.

I saw Roy at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1977. If I remember correctly, he had been away from live performances for a few years, and it was a part of a comeback tour of sorts. He was in somewhat of a melancholy mood because Elvis had died just a few days prior. He had a full compliment of strings and backup singers, and he put on show for the ages with his voice. I also was extremely fortunate to see Little Richard at The Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood in 1969, and Jerry Lee Lewis at The Palomino Club in Los Angeles in 77 or 78. You should also listen to his studio recording of In Dreams from the early 60s. You guys do a great job.
