I wish there are more games like this, where they recreating world inside the game, not just copy paste but heavily inspired and capture the aesthetic closely.
I'm sure there are others but not as dedicated as Unleashed.

I think Genshin is the closest thing to what I feel when playing Unleashed, these two games are recreating world with striking artstyle while keep it realistic. one is Pixar , other is Anime.
heck If you switch their hub theme music each other, it feels like home. Chun-nan = Liyue especially and the upcoming Natlan which going to be like Mazuri.
I hear some people doesn't like Adabat hub world music, kinda understandable bc Gamelan song tend to be repetitive, both day and night is almost exactly the same just different tempo. -but not always repetitive tho..
I used to play Gamelan for 6 years (specifically Saron, the appergio you hear in entire night stage and the lead instrument in hubworld)
I think the composer doesn't really utilize it much. Gamelan is a very niche and not known by much. a lot of them are towards Gothic side. so it is hard to make them blast feeling.. that's why they only use it as sample most of the time, and use other instrument for the lead melody and drums.
But despite that, having to hear a genre where I lived in the most iconic video game, It makes me feel joyfull

I believe the holoska flag is based on the Alaska flag, not because of the coloration necessarily, but because of the big star in the center, which I believe represents the North Star

Mystic Ruins is definitely based on South America. Sonic team literally took a plane and went on a vacation to there and took pictures of it and used their pictures as textures.
Sonic Team took a vacation to Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru to get inspiration for the Mystic Ruins for SA1. I MIGHT be wrong about that, but that’s the factoid that I’ve heard the most.

I'm taking an animation course for college and for one project I based the environment off of Adabat, so I also did a little research on the real world locations. I looked up the name of the type of houses in the hub worlds then studied why they were designed that way so I could understand better what I was making, and even learned a little about the culture there.
Let me tell you, people, my project looked ass. Unfathomably ass.

I would LOVE to hear more about the history behind Sonic locations, this is fascinating and you present it so well! Very easy to digest, and great humour. Also, as a British, the fact they tried to combine England with France and other EU countries is utterly hilarious. I've probably seen that clock before, but I don't think I'd have ever realised it's Big Ben because, I mean...Big Ben in ITALY? Or even worse, FRANCE?! NOOO 😂😂😂
Honestly, the different enviorments of Unleashed were always ome of my favoeite aspects. Being able to actually talk to people in each location and just goof around between stages in the hub worlds, makes Sonic's world actually feel *alive*
Them being inspired by real world places is also a great touch.
If and when we get the sequel to Frontiers, they NEED to give us something like this to make the "open zone" gameplay a little more meaningfull than just solving mostly boring puzzles and climbing platforms that pop into existence :V

I've actually eaten Surströmming. I bought a 1lb can of it and it didn't smell as bad as people say it does. When it dried it smelled like a strong cheese, like an 18 month aged gouda - my favorite cheese. And the fish itself tasted like raw white onions. Which I personally don't like, but if you like onions, you'd like surströmming.
Basically strong onion + strong cheese. Did not taste like fish at all. Kind of like how sauerkraut does not taste like cabbage.
I’d love to see a more detailed video on each of the locations in unleashed as they do contain a ton of history in them

Oh man it just makes you wish that Sega would use these locations in there's cyberspace stages and I do like it when Sonic games having diverse locations other than Green Hill or chemical plant or sky sanctuary again and like you said it makes the world of Sonic feels more alive because when you're on the islands in frontiers it just feels more lonely and the only people you talk to is Sonic's friends and like there are no other residents at all except for the coco I hope Sega can touch upon these locations again

It’s pretty amazing that today people are really going dept to a game that was made 14 years ago and it’s inspiration of the real world it shows that one of my favorite and one of my first and nostalgic sonic games has aged well 27:20

Really cool video. I like geography a lot and I played Unleashed again recently after several years and it was easy to pinpoint which exact country the levels were based on. You can tell some are definitely hybrids of multiple countries like you pointed out and it was a fun time trying to distinguish the influence of one country from another.
I thought it was funny you said you learning Russian was a "long story", then you showed your home country was Azerbaijan and it wasn't such a long story in my head anymore lol. Shamar is my favorite level in the game, too.
I will say, although I do love Unleashed I would have loved if we had gotten a level based on India, Latin America or Russia. I personally would have traded Holoska for a Sonic-ified version of Russia where you would see all the way from architecture inspired by Moscow/Petersburg (st basil's cathedral, kremlin, etc) all the way to edges of east Siberia. It would basically just be replacing half of Holoska and the first half would show off even more wonderful landscapes and architecture. The new take on architecture and old designs is what makes the setpieces in Unleashed so amazing. Empire city if OK, but it's probably my least favorite of the levels in terms of how much it stands out. I would have replaced Empire City with the chaos of Uttar Pradesh or a mishmash of Brazil anyday. Or heck, a more colorful and fanciful city like Tokyo

To be fair, Eggmanland isnt actually based on a real country, but rather, locations from around the world with Neon Lights and Amusement Parks, like Las Vegas in America and Disneyland Japan.
This is a incredible video Keep it up. I have a little bit of a bonus for you. You know how the best part of Every single sonic game is the music? Well...... several months ago I became a Massive Eurovision fan and one of my Absolute favorite songs of all of the contest is Spirit in the sky which represented Norway in 2019. When i first heard it I Instantly fell in love with it. it was so good. now why does all of this have to do with your video you may ask? well KEiiNO the artist behind it has a Sami in their Band and he does something called Joik which is Basically the Sami's indigenous way of singing and KEiiNO purely specializes in Super catchy Electric based music. And i LOVED it. It Quickly became my all time favorite song in the entire contest. It is Just a incredible song and has a Super important message inside it. And then i heard Monument and it was all over for me. X_X I just could not get enough of their music and They are now my all time favorite artist and has been to this very day. There have been some strong rivals (Ollie for instance is a Incredible artist from Estonia Please check him out when you have the chance, Heck Kellen Quinn is rapidly giving Keiino a run for their money as all for sonic songs he did were going so hard on me now that i had sonic frontiers) But Nothing will top Keiino as my all time favorite artist. Did i just make a super long comment on How much i love Keiino thanks to you showing me just one small mention of the People Keiino were Inspired and Has in their band? Yes, Yes i did. Wow, I learnt so much from this, thank you! This made me like Sonic Unleashed even more now! This just shows how much effort the developers put into this game, and the amount of cultural references is just impressive! Compared to now where we just have green hill and generic environments! I can’t imagine anyone calling this a bad game. Ooh you like history, you’d get on well with my brother who’s at Oxford right now (I’m a maths person, so not sure I can cope with a more in depth video like this!). You also seem to travel a lot! Do you like geography? Also, I think the closest flag to Holoska is San Marino.

I saw a wax painting of Brad Pitt, and other things, but the most stand out thing I remember to this day is when I saw a homeless crack addict couple singing on the sidewalk or bench. Also my Dad's ex's family had Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for Wii U, so Sonic kinda does fit in this story. Also for American joke ideas, you could have used Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z or a plane joke.

Don't know if you'll se this but i feel like spagonia also represents the italian city of Siena pretty well with the tight path ways and height difference of the houses. Siena also houses a clock tower in the main square. You should take a look at it

Who says this series needs to be constrained to Unleashed? I’d since other Sonic games also use real life locations and nations for stage design, we can bring in 3 and K, the Adventure games, and 06. I’m especially curious to how Station Square and Pittsburgh PA are linked since I’ve been to that place many times and not once made the connection.

also the name of the tower is usually called the elizabeth tower and its been called that since 6th of feb 2012 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee
