HP Laptop survived the war in Ukraine and saved my friends life. Now I need to save it's life.

- Not many of my usual jokes here, just a more laid back, serious video that details the story of how I saved this HP Pavilion Gaming laptop that was responsible for keeping my friends phone charged while he was in a bomb shelter when Russia first invaded Ukraine. This doubles as a very basic "how-to" on upgrading the NVMe and replacing the thermal paste on this model laptop. And dealing with the absolute insane partitioning scheme that HP gave it.
Leave your politics at the door. The facts are as follows: My friend was 17 years old when Russia invaded his town. He had minutes to grab his belongings and evacuate his home into a bomb shelter (and almost taken out by shrapnel on the way). This HP laptop literally saved his life by trickle charging his phone for 3 weeks so he could arrange transportation out of the country.
Now it's here in my shop, and I'm going to fix it. - Věda a technologie
I wanted to keep this under 8 minutes so you wouldn't get with mid-roll ads as I didn't feel it appropriate given the subject matter. I apologize for completely forgetting to record some parts like the Diskpart process, taking out the fans, removing the paste, and taking the bottom cover off, but you can just check out my DIY laptop cleaning video to see most of that.
I might have nearly 650k subs but I'm still just 1 guy with a phone juggling all this social media stuff and running a busy repair shop full-time, so my production quality is not quite there yet 😅
I do truly appreciate each and every one of you, and I hope my videos help make your day better and maybe motivate you to do something nice for someone you know, or don't know.
I offered to work for you for free, but your discord mods are hypocrites and I never got a chance to tell you. My repair business basically ended during Covid and instead of trying to restart my business here I figured I'd just move to another town, seeing as I had nowhere to go I thought you might have a parking spot somewhere you knew of that I could inhabit in exchange for my labor.
Nah man it's completely fine..
Thank you for making great vids like this
@@TheGreyLineMattersmann try to get a little something started cos parking spot don't seem too convenient
Was wondering because this isn't as LONG FORM as I was expecting but still loved it and you don't have to apologize for shit like this you're only human, just keep trying to get better like every one of us and you'll definitely get better, plus you could work on getting a dedicated room for filming or just someone to help with camera stuff, editing...
@@toperaheem Well, I spent the rest of my money on converting a van to live in and buying a bunch of solar and other equipment. As long as I have power and my tools, I can work anywhere. Just need a parking spot. Someday I'll make enough money to get another apartment or something but for now, I'll be living in a van.

Well, i have to disagree about that just because of ONE specific story of a TURBOCHAD bartender who snuck onto military operations to bring free beers to his clients on war time, aboarding even a battleship and getting stranded in the enemy country in the process. I don't remember how he got out but i'm pretty sure he did fine.

@@RustieFawnstfu ivan go back to frontline will ya?
@OrthodoxyPalestinian "just"? Are you dumb perhaps? It arranged for his phone to transport him out
My buddy, who's on disability, was having random crashes. We walked him though a few quick fixes (reseat ram, check power connectors, ECT) all to no avail. My dad had just built a new PC, so I told him about my buddy's PC problems, and asked how much he would want for it. My dad ended up giving it to him free of charge, I helped him move his old SSDs, and I got him a WIFI card.
See man, that's what it's all about.
Your father is a good man.
For a moment I thought your friend was hooked on a computer due to a disability and thus he himself was crashing.
@@YabaiModdingwhat 😭
Me and my dad were both on SSD. He broke his back, falling off a rail car, and hit the steel tracks. I didn't break my back, but I have spinal degenerative disease. I have literally lost like 5 inches in height. Walk all slumped over and shit. It's so embarrassing.
Sadly, I lost dad a year ago in Dec.
But we both enjoy working on computers and would buy parts from the local estate sales. Thrift shops, salvation army, and eBay. I donated 3 full pcs last year I built from the parts I got out of Dads house.
I personally want to thank u.
I know how hard it is living on SSD. It alone is IMPOSSIBLE. If not for a few side streams. I wouldn't ever make it.
I'm very lucky to get the satisfaction of helping others when I can.
I saved money for 4 and a half years. I finally was able to buy a gaming computer from Craig's list. I met with the guy and while I was grabbing my phone from my car, he took off with my money and the computer.
Be careful out there. There is all sorts. I am just heartbroken over it. Over 4 years down the tube and some of that money came out of my dead fathers wallet. As u can imagine, I've been very hurt by this and it almost stopped me from donating to others. However, I've chosen not to let it define me.
Donating to see if you can read this!
Man, I love your videos, I love your work and your humor.
I really want to be like you when I grow up, that's simply my dream.
Again, thanks, and please please please upload more videos, this one made me cry.
Thank you so much man. It's not difficult to do what I do. I know the joke is that I'm the greatest technician, but I'm barely average. My success is from treating people fairly and not lying to them for the sake of money. The relationships you make from being honest will end up being more valuable, both financially and personally, than charging a lot of money for repairs. Just start taking stuff apart and putting it back together, that's all it takes to begin your journey!
Find yourself an older busted computer. Take some time to figuring out what’s wrong and how to fix it. I can’t speak for anyone else, but that’s how I got started learning how to fix PCs. Had two broken ones as a teen. Parents couldn’t afford to pay the only local shop to fix them - they charged outrageous prices - so they told me if I wanted to, feel free to do whatever. From two busted PCs I made one working one. Been fixing and building them ever since.
I feel the same too, tbh.
this is such a deep story for a laptop. Im blown away.
Yeah I hope other techs or mechanics, or anyone fixing things see this. Sometimes you're fixing someone's life.

@@SalemTechsperts Have you tried using free version of partition wizard and moved the partition that way? I tried it and it worked. What do you think of third-party software? Do you use it in the business?
@@SalemTechspertsbro you did a good thing thanks ❤
Keep paying it forward! Thank you for everything you do.
Thank you so much, this will be getting donated.
Nothing wrong with doing a solid for a friend, and with that kind of story, it makes it even more heartwarming.
The greatest technician that's ever lived.
No, really, I *absolutely* admire your job and your humor, I honestly want to be like you when I grow up (having a repair shop and being the second greatest technician that's ever lived). Thanks for uploading these videos, they've honestly been my favorite entertainment for over a month now!
A little tip: a lot of technicians can replace an ssd, add new thermal paste and clean out swamp gooch. But soldering, is a different beast and a much rarer skill. Get some soldering skills and you can give Salem a run for his money.
3:33 Btw, windows ALWAYS does this, order is:
- 260 MB UEFI partition (was 100 MB or less for older systems or Win 10 32 bit)
- 16 MB reserved partition (invisible to disk management but can be seen in diskpart)
- Main partition (C drive)
- Arbitrarily sized Recovery partition (can be from 250 MB minimum to even 1 GB or more)
So if you clone the drive to a bigger one, the new partition will always be a 5th partition after the recovery one.
Oh and btw, if you update windows and for some reason the new recovery wim file is bigger than around 100-110 mb less than the recovery partition size, windows will shrink the C partition putting a bigger second recovery partition to the left of the older one, WITHOUT deleting the older one. It can do this several times in a row. I have an old disk with four recovery partitions lmao.
edit: there's actually a way to do the resize process way faster than how you did.
All you had to do was to disable the recovery partition with cmd so it moves the wim file into C:\windows
ecovery, then you can delete the recovery partition in DISKPART, and resize freely the C and D drive, then you can recreate a new recovery partition, set GPT attributes to it, and exit diskpart. Then you can re enable the recovery with cmd so the wim file is moved back to the partition instead of being in the C drive.
Thank you for taking your time to comment this, I've been basically learning all I know about being a technician from CZcams and it's comments like this that really help
I keep my windows installs on 100GB dedicated partitions for easy cloning / backups / repairing, etc. and all programs, applications, data on a dedicated storage partition.
In the event Windows goes belly up (which is extremely rare for me), I can just nuke and re-deploy, or run an in-place repair "upgrade".
Gives easy piece of mind and allows me to run with all native Windows backup and restore functionality disabled.
Which soft do u use to move a system from smaller ssd to bigger one?
While I can't get enough of the gags you do, they're always a highlight of my day, this case is one of the reasons why you're not only a heccin' real one, you truly are *THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN THAT'S EVER LIVED.*
Pro tip: If you need to extend or move partitions, GParted is your go-to tool.
While it's a Linux application, it's included in most live distros, so you can simply boot from a USB drive and let GParted work its magic.
(I don't know if it affects Bitlocked devices, but non bitlocked works perfectly)
Won't do bitlocked stuff but since that's windows 10 (I think) that's not enabled by default. Win11 has bitlocker enabled if the machine supports modern standby but you can remove it
gparted live exists
If it has bitlock, your best bet is to remove it and hope to fking GOD it doesn't sh1t itself.
Also clonezilla is a huge helper when cloning drives. You can do partition to partition or disk to disk or who knows how many other things. I've used it only to move data as-is from a smaller drive to a larger drive and then I can extend the partitions or add new ones.
@@TheMoonWatcher That's how I first cloned a drive. Used Clonezilla then used Gparted to extend the partition
I gotta appreciate the legend that you are. You make funny videos, willing to help your own friends out and even call out the inevitable haters and beggars with 0 remorse yet still believe there is good in the world. There's a difference between saving a life like I do as a firefighter and making a life better like you did for your friend, i like what you do more as you're not someones worst day like we are. Keep it up and glad to have someone like you on this planet.
As a Ukrainian that was in one of the most dangerous parts in the war, respect to you THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN THAT HAS EVER LIVED
For the partitioning - I use AOMEI Partition Assistant to move and resize partitions when I have to and it works great, it's a lot less tedious than manually doing it.
I use MiniTool Partition Wizard which does the same. But as I mentioned at 3:37 the program still has to move all that data after you resize and click Apply, and I've had many experiences where it's taken hours for seemingly no reason to resize a partition (I'm guessing since the app has to move the data to the new sector after it's been resized). So in this case, Diskpart it was.
@@SalemTechsperts Yeah that's fair, also if you delete those pesky "recovery partitions" with Diskpart it makes things a lot easier too, as they're pretty useless and just get in the way lol
MiniTool PW is my go-to more often than not as well.
AOMEI sucks, you won't be able to 'reset this PC' after using it.
Man, been watching your stuff for a while, love every moment of it. But this right here was touching.
The closest I can even imagine what this kid has gone through on a personal level are the few stories my grandmother told me of her being just a child herself living through the Blitz in England. Glad to hear he's safe, and his rig that has likely saved more than just his life, will see him through whatever comes.
Kudos to the lot of ya!
Gotta give props to the greatest technician that's ever lived, you manage to make me laugh even when I am going through shit. Keep doing these

I grew up with a father who worked in Panasonic. Yes, That one. Yes the same one that collaborated with Nintendo as they were being dragged kicking and screaming into making disc based consoles.
But beyond that, That gave me an utter fascination with technology and explicitly the business behind them. I look forward to doing business with you soon, as unusual as this may be.
To try save some headache, you can image the drive with Macrium Reflect then change the partition size one at a time with the restore vs moving stuff around a whole bunch to get around Windows nonsense. That's really cool what you have done for your friend - inspiration and always enjoy your videos!
I hope your business will be more successful because you helped a fellow friend who needed help
You are awesome bro, Happy Holidays to you
How awesome of you. The kindest technician that's ever lived!
Love your content and your work ethic, just thought you should know that when selecting partitions to clone to a fresh drive, Macrium Reflect has an option to reorder and resize partitions when moving from a smaller drive to a larger drive (at least when I run it on Windows). I've used it to upgrade from a smaller SSD (250GB) to a bigger one (1TB). Not sure if you were aware of it or if you just have other reasons not to use it that I'm not aware of since I'm still new to the computer repair space (I've only worked on 3 computers so far) but I'm certain that The Greatest Technician That's Ever Lived gets a good job done regardless. Working and recording is tough. I'm surprised maybe only you two or just you, make the videos. You're alr busy with something, he's alr busy with something...
Yeah it's a tough balance that honestly isn't sustainable for me. The videos are all me. Out of the ten repairs we get a day, I choose one that's interesting, record it during the repair while bouncing back and forth on the bench / phone calls / walk-ins. Then go home, eat, write the script, edit the video, release, go to bed. Lupe's a real one and helps me at the shop where he can but he's got his own life as well. I'll have to hire a full-time tech eventually, but damn, cost of living is rough out here.

Yeah, yeah... I see your shorts all the time. But the "shorts" version of this story made me subscribe. You're welcome... and also thank you. Good people are too fuggin' rare these days.
Not bad, and huge congrats for being able to do this free of charge to the customer. Sadly, the Russia/Ukraine war has been devastating in many ways, so I'm glad you were ale to help out!
As for the laptop itself, it looks decent, although being a HP I'm not surprised of the overheating, since my HP gaming laptop did the same thing!
It might have been cheaper (and easier) to just add a 1TB Crucial MX500 (or similar) 2.5in SATA SSD into that empty slot that HP left, make that the G drive, then extend out the C drive to fill all of the 500GB SSD that was already preinstalled. But at least the laptop had dual channel RAM! And at least it'll run cooler now!
Oh, I had the exact same laptop. HP pavilion is such an amazing laptop lol. It lasted me 5 years and I gave it to my cousin for his college work 2 years ago. Still alive and kicking.
