The Google Pixel 6a is finally here, shaking up the Pixel lineup. Before the 6a, the choice between the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, and Pixel 5A was pretty simple, depending on what features you cared about and how much you wanted to spend. Now, the Pixel 6a takes features from all previous Pixels, including the flagship Pixel 6 Pro! So, is the Pixel 6a the best new Pixel? Let's talk about it!

I don't understand why the Google Pixel lineup gets so much hate from the "elite tech reviewers" I have seen some reviews where the reviewer agrees that the still pics on the Pixel are better looking than for example the iPhone but still thinks the iPhone has a better camera!! WTF!

They are saying the iPhone has the better OVERALL camera system. That includes photos and videos. I value photos more than videos, so I prefer the Pixel look for photography. But it's almost like splitting hairs. Both take great photos. When it comes to videos, iPhone is King. And has been for some time now.

The average phone user doesn't care about 60 hz, the average phone user doesn't even know what 60hz or 90-120hz means. I want all day battery and a camera I can point and shoot and capture great shots of my kids.
The tensor chip giving us all the computational photography tricks of the flagships is so good for me. Face unblur is gonna be so clutch with my two young kids, halfy indoors shots are ruined with my s20fe because of any movement. Magic eraser, real tone, night sight, camouflage etc just cherry's on top. The only omission thats mildly inconvenient to me is wireless charging but I can live without it 🤷‍♂️.

Jon, have been following you for some years now, on technobuffalo, and have always valued your comments and reviews. Your review on the pixel 6A is well balanced. I don't ever seem to have the problems on my phones that others have on their phones. I guess I'm just lucky. What I like about the pixel 6A, is the smaller size, the plastic back ( I always use a case anyway), the durability of the phone, and of course the software and pure android experience. After 3 years of use, my old pixel phone had not shown any decrease in smoothness or speed. It was working just as it did when I purchased it.

I find ultrawide very handy in tight spaces to get everything you need in an image, or to provide extra context to the environment around your main subject. But it's great to have telephoto too. I use it a lot less but sometimes it's very handy (on my Oneplus 7T Pro, which I went for over the Pixel 4 XL at the time as the Pixel 4 range was disappointing in comparison). I'm tempted by a smaller phone in the form of the Zenfone 9 or considering holding out for the Pixel 7 Pro (or Ultra if it ever exists), because the Zenfone 9 doesn't have a telephoto lens and losing that would be a bit tough. That said, I've been craving a smaller phone again for some reason and it gives me Nexus 5 vibes.

If you actually go in depth in phones which is more cheaper you'll know how much should a phone actually cost. Not everyone needs camera and all that voice recognition stuff magic eraser stuff. Most people don't even use Google assistant and that is why Google phones don't sell well. They need to improve their pricing, Apple should too but they'll only listen if people stop buying them which is never gonna happen.

You forgot to talk about wireless charging and also that the 6a has got lower RAM and comes only in 128 GB variant. In my opinion the Pixel 6 is the most balanced offering from the Pixel lineup. There is minimal observable difference between 90hz and 120hz and having a waterfall display or a flat display is subjective. What you really sacrifice on is the telephoto camera which in my opinion is not worth the price difference between the 6 and the 6 pro. So 6 is a true winner here. Although needs could be totally subjective.

I'm with you on the telephoto. It's a game changer for getting great pictures of my kiddos. I hate how expensive the 6 Pro was, but that lens is awesome.
Side note: I originally had the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the photos from the telephoto lens were hot garbage. I really appreciate that there's not much drop in quality on the 6 Pro when you use the telephoto lens.

From someone who works in wireless get the 6 or 6a. Avoid the 6 Pro. That phone normally arrives dead on arrival with a software bug. Last few that I have sold have come back to be returned cause of software bug, zero cellular connections, or bricked out of the box. They failed so hard with the 6 Pro, but hit their stride with the 6. Now everyone’s experience is different, but that is just mine with working in the actual environment that sees multiple of these devices as part of their job.

I pre-ordered the pixel6a despite it's expensive in India. So I really want to know.
Since Pixel6a has the same tensor SoC as 6 & 6 Pro, can't Google update the 6a through Software update and enable 90Hrz RR, and increase the charging speed to ~30w ? Technically is it possible?
Is it possible to recover video at 360, 480, 720p as sometimes I need to record video at work, and share w/ others, and 360, 480 is good enough for such purposes ?
