  • The Sony 70-350mm lens is my favourite lens for shooting surf photography from the beach with Sony apsc cameras.

    It's the perfect combination of excellent image quality in a relatively small, high quality package.

    I just purchased the Sony 70-350mm for $677 like new condition, should arrive early next week. I’m soooo excited for it! 😊

    Budget wise, a good 70-350mm lens for under 1k, is a bargain! Factor in the compact size, and it's a no brainer. It is a slow lens and the fs varies, which is why it's not more expensive, but all things considered, silly good for the $... Personally, it makes no sense to me to put FS lenses on a compact APC body negating the entire benefit of the compact APC body.

    I waited a lot of months for a used unit. Finally got this lens for around usd650. Really happy with the purchase.
    I tend to close down the aperture to f8 at 350mm (It’s ever slightly soft wide open) I’ve set the button on the lens for high shutter speed (I don’t shoot action often), and sometimes use clear image zoom for extra reach. From my testing, this can result in better definition compared to just cropping very aggresively in post.

      That's a great price, and thanks for the tips. I'll have to try out clear image zoom, I've always assumed that cropping in post would be better, but interested to compare the two based on your feedback

    Really good informative video and straight to the point. I am trying to decide which lens for my a6500 camera, and I shoot mainly watersports like surfing, windsurfing and foiling it sounds like you really like the 70-350 lens.....liked and subscribed, cheers!

    Fantastic! Finally got good advice on stepping up my reach. I have just bought ( 6 months ago) an A6000 with an 18-105 lens. Am loving but desperately looking for more reach. Are you aware of any gadgets (budget) that could boost the 18-105 G lens?(the £419 one lol). Or would I need to get the kit 210 zoom and then add Olympus gadget on end? Sooo grateful for these videos!

    • @Learningsurfphotography1
      @Learningsurfphotography1  Před 2 lety

      I'm pretty sure the 18-105mm's filter thread is too big to accept something like the TCON 17X unfortunately.
      It's a great lens in the right place though, I shot in the water with it a bit.
      I expect the kit 55-210mm is the best option, even that on its own might be enough, and there are lots of them around second hand for good prices.

    Thanks for the review, can you test the new tamron 18-300 mm ? And what is the zoom len that we can use with a full frame a7iii?
    Thanks

    • @Learningsurfphotography1
      @Learningsurfphotography1  Před 2 lety +2

      At the moment I'm not too interested in the Tamron 18-300mm.
      It's very similar in size and weight to this lens, but I'd rather have the extra 50mm at the long end than at the wide end.
      I've also tried the Sony 18-200mm, and it wasn't as useful as I thought it would be.
      For surf photography I'm generally either shooting with a long lens, or a wide angle, so having both in one isn't super useful.
      I don't know about full frame zoom lenses, I only shoot with aps-c bodies, so I concentrate on lenses designed for them.
      I'm sure there are a few options out there for the A7III.

    Hi I currently have a 210 telephoto kit lens with the Olympus 1.7x tcon attached to it and i mainly use it for surf videos. I wanna upgrade my video quality and reach. What do you think about the new sigma 150-600 vs the Sony apsc 70-350 lens with the olympus tcon 1.7x . Essentialy they will both have.a reach around 900mm so I’m waying out if it’s worth buying the sigma that would cost around $1500 or jus buying a second hand 70-350 for $750 second hand

    • @Learningsurfphotography1
      @Learningsurfphotography1  Před 2 lety

      If you're not shooting with a 4K capable camera body, I'd think about getting one of them first, as that'll make a difference to video quality.
      If you're already shooting 4K, I think either option will offer similar video quality at full zoom.
      You'll have more versatility with the 70-350 _ converter, as you can shoot at 70mm if you're close.
      It's also much smaller and lighter, which is a big benefit if you shoot somewhere that's not close to a car park.
      I'd go for the 70-350mm personally.
      The only reason to get the Sigma would be if you're being paid by someone to shoot the video and they care as much about how professional you look on the beach as the quality of the video. In that case, the Sigma is going to make you look like more of a pro videographer.
      By the time the video is edited, graded, encoded for CZcams etc. I doubt you could tell the difference between the quality with either set up.

    Great info, just bought the lens and used it for bird photos yesterday. Do you have the link to the extra piece you screwed on in the beginning? (converter?)

    • @Learningsurfphotography1

      It's called the Olympus TCON 17X , but it's no longer being made, so it might be hard to find one, used ones pop up on Amazon from time to time: amzn.to/3PDi6YX
      I'd also check eBay or similar sites.

      @@fishnmusicn you need an adapter, a step down ring to go from the end of the lens to the back of the teleconverter, I found one on eBay.

    Hi, I recently bought the converter (I already had the 70-350) and it doesn't focus very well, how do you use it specifically?

    • @Learningsurfphotography1
      @Learningsurfphotography1  Před rokem

      I didn't have any issues with focussing. Try changing the settings, if it focuses in manual focus mode you know it's not the converter, if it doesn't, then you might have an issue with the converter

    • @Learningsurfphotography1
      @Learningsurfphotography1  Před rokem +1

      I wouldn't bother with the adapter unless you really need the extra reach for video, where cropping isn't possible.

    • @Learningsurfphotography1
      @Learningsurfphotography1  Před rokem +1

      @@richardjulianperezperez362 I can't remember to be honest, it will be smallest when zoomed in furthest, which is the only time you need the converter, but I'd still only use the teleconverter if you absolutely need the extra reach. And if you're shooting professional video, consider a 150-600mm or similar lens, I've got a review of the sigma version on my channel.

      I've never checked the firmware status, so I can't tell you if there's a new version.
      I'm not sure what a firmware update would offer?
      Would it be something to do with more recent camera bodies?
      Mine still works great if that helps.
