In the Expanse, being progressive means different thing, Earth, Mars and the Belt working together like the Rocinante crews. That is also what diversity means in the Expanse.
People are no longer discriminated due to their race, genders, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. Therefore, in the Expanse point of view, having 2 female candidates as Secretary General is not considered a progressive. It's just a normal thing.

Leave it to the normies to inject contemporary identity politics into a story set 200 years in the future. I was especially annoyed when they went on about terrorism and "brown people", "representation" based on skin color etc. None of this would matter to the people living in that setting, just like it shouldn't today. We are just not evolved enough as a society yet.

Another way to look at it, is that no matter how much you stamp out racism over things like skin color, hair, etc., new racism emerges over things like bone density, and humanity still has an innate need for an "in-group" and and "out-group". i.e. you can never eliminate racism in society, you can only change what it's racist about.
The only exception is if there's a challenge so great that humanity *has* to come together, because the external force can take the place of the "other".

regarding the discussion you guys had about the ship sojourner. That is an Earth settler ship that was waiting to go through the ring when it was attacked by Belter pirates. Later during the Belter discussion or trial, Marco told them that the ship was already sold for scrap. Which is what Drummer told the Earth forces. That is why when they ID'd the ship, Avasarala realized that either the belters lied to them, or were lied to themselves about the ship. In either case, the ship was compromised and no Earthers were on the ship anymore (we saw their bodies spaced). That is why they fired on it.

Avasalara's argument for maintaining power is the same as Julius Caesar's: "I saved you from the enemy years ago, so I deserve to have all power from now on." That's not a winning argument.
And Avasalara has indeed been handling things as though she were an absolute monarch. She should, for instance, have chartered a portion of Illus to the Ganymede Belters along with a science team to investigate the Protomolecule. Instead, she gave the lithium mining charter to an Earth corporation. If she expects the OPA to enforce the blockade against their own people, she should have thrown them that bone, because they have no benefit right now to show for their alliance. But she's in absolute monarch mode, she's always been bureaucrat, not a politician.
Murtry is about the same as Errinwright, just on a smaller scale.

Thing about Gao though is that even if she were to win, she would find herself in exactly the same position once she has all the information, making the opposite judgements of Avasarala so far could potentially cost thousands of lives. The home front wouldn't change at all significantly because well, change needed always moves at a snails pace..she would be just like any other figure head who gets push back from her opposition that would probably last her entire installment. No different in the real world honestly. Doesn't mean she shouldn't run, but the realities are...doesn't quite mean anything.

They were at the low end of 2nd tier at best. When the series was announced, I have very low expectation because they simply don't have the money... commitment to make good sci-fi wasn't the issue. I think they left it out because Basia's actor was only used in one scene from season 2, so it would've been a stretch to get him back or give him a role as big as he has in the book - but I do agree, it made more sense that he'd be opposed to Felcia getting educated with his experience with Doctor Strickland.
Also thought it would've been so good to get Havelock on the Edward Israel, there could've been so much more action in space - but we did get Avasarala, Bobbie, Drummer and Claes between scenes... Could've been nice to keep the aspect ratio consistent too - but it was nice getting the extra context while this season went on.

      @widget3672 Před 4 lety

@Roya Even so, I feel like finishing on book 6 wouldn't be too bad - but I worry that by then we'll have the final book and somehow we're going to end up ruining it... Maybe they could change the time frame, I know in Cibola Burn, James Holden is supposed to be greying up, but the series so far has kept that pretty tame... It's possible they'll change the time frame and carry on with the main plot points - but I was kind of looking forward to seeing old-old lady Avasarala... She also has a thing for Pistachios so kind of was looking forward to seeing her leave shells everywhere when she's so old she has stopped giving even less of a fuck...
Even so, I thought ending on season 3 would've been a good "open book" kind of finale, but looking at it, Babylon's Ashes wouldn't be a horrible place to call it all to an end... Still, quite the sci-fi series to cover an entire lifetime of a crew from start to finish spanning the biggest shift ever to face humanity (I can't think of a better idea than exactly what happens in the books - but hey, the show has not been too disappointing so far and with the original writers on the staff, they could only go so wrong...

Chief Murtry has done nothing wrong. The actor (Burn Gorman) may have villainous facial features, but Morty has been justified in all of his actions thus far.
Is he a bit harsh? Sure, but the Belter terrorists killed many of his people and Murphy's job on the RCE mission is security and he has done what needed to be done. And he is right to call out Holden and the Roci for harboring one of those terrorists. Marty is just being pragmatic.

The issue is about escalation. Murtry uses the situation to further his personal goals. He constantly increases the violence. Once he had audio evidence of who the terrorists were, he ambushed them and killed them. If Holden was in his shoes he would of released that information to everyone and try to make an arrest.
Murtry is not pragmatic, his end goal to remove every belter for profit. Even in times of need, he refuses to help anyone and uses provocation and violence to assert more control.
This whole season tackles the idea of frontier justice and whether you can ever think of it as "justice".

I actually understand Murtry and why he is pissed, but that doesn't give him the right to go around and shoot people. Holden and the Roci crew did the right thing by letting Lucia stay on the ship because Murtry would have killed her.

It's really cool how this season exposes the petty fascists amongst us with the "murtry did nothing wrong" bs

But don't forget what Amos said, he knew people like Murtry. He is a killer. And he will give excuses to justify his killing. Like some psycopath cops, that kill someone just because he was a thug or has criminal history etc etc.
So no, what Murtry did was wrong. He can't be a judge, jury and executioner (Naomi's line). He has no right whatsoever. Yes, what the Belters did was wrong, however, by doing another wrong thing cannot be righteous. 2 wrong things cannot be right. It would make the situation worse.

Murtry should have used his army to arrest all the suspects, instead of acting like "judge, jury and executioner". He is very wrong for killing people like that, even if he is the victim of a bomb attack. He wasn't being attacked anymore when he started a killing spree. There was no imminent threat, what he did wasn't self-defense, like some people seem to think. It was pure murder and revenge.
