  • OSCAR WINNER:Best Actress - Joan CrawfordWhat Veda wants, her mother Mildred Pierce provides. Even if Mildred must end her middle-class marriage, climb atop the male-dominated business world and marry a wealthy man she doesn't love. "I'll do anything," Mildred says in explaining her love for her daughter. But does anything include murder? Just when you think you got this nominee for five Oscars, including "Best Picture," figured out, along comes a shocking twist ending! Directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca), and featuring Joan Crawford in an Oscar-winning performance, as well as TWO "Best Supporting Actress" nominations (for both Eve Arden and Ann Blyth), it's no wonder Mildred Pierce remains a classic.

One of my all time fav's. Jack Carson was never better than this role and Joan was at her peak. Ann Blyth as the spoiled, brat daughter is a brilliant turn.

I saw this years ago and forgot the ending. What's sad about this is that there are actually people in the world this wicked. Sadly, the mother had a speciality for love and sacrificing for the very people who couldn't give it back to her in return.

AN ABSOLUTE BRILLIANT MOVIE ! From Crawford at her Best and the subtle sarcastic humor of Eve Arden, this picture is so entertaining. The spoiled, lying, treacherous daughter that has nothing but money on her mind played brilliantly by newcomer Anne Blythe. If you look closely in her eyes, there are $ where the pupils ought to be. It came out the year I was born in 1945 and a yearly watched ritual. Sad thing today is the young generation doesn't even know who Crawford is, or even Betty Davis for that matter.

Film noir isn't even offered on American platforms, while the Russian platform have all early cinema from the silent to pre code &film noir...and it's free to watch...in so many ways America has lost its values & does not cherish its past history....😢

A great movie...Veda was a spoiled rotten bi&ch but, she owned it, when she told her mother, "if she came back, nothing would change"...... Can't relate b/c I have 6 children that I would give my life for w/o hesitation. However, if any of my children ever got physical with me, they have crossed a line you can't come back from, I would tell them just that, along with we are no longer family, pack your sh@t and, leave my house, we are done (All my children know, i say what i mean & mean what I say. You can't get anymore disrespect than raising your hand to your parent).

"Your mother's been practising and practising. You know how perfect she always wants to be. Well, this time she MUST be perfect. Do you understand?" "She wants everything to be perfect." "This time it's even more important. They're making your mother take a SCREEN TEST. Do you know what that is?" "When they're not sure they want you?"
"And you know how shameful that is for her? She wants this film. She knows she's right. She IS this character, Mildred Pierce.
We HAVE to help her. We will, won't we?" "I will. I WILL!"

The detective work at the beginning was terribly bad. The cop claimed that her first husband was guilty simply because he had a motive and didn't deny it when asked. Even if the murder weapon did belong to him, it's still tricky. There are so many problems with that logic, it makes the head spin.
