i fucking swear everyone is making "what if austria-hungary..." videos
the monarchy was a last resort for both austria and hungary. hungary lost an independence war against austria and didn't want to lose all its extra autonomy that it had before. austria got excluded from germany (which formed at that time in the 1860s) and would have lost all of its significance and power. teaming up (as equals) was a compromission for both and now that we're both independent, no sane person would think this is a good idea
