- Why The Walleye? A look at how to use the Walleye in DCS and why it existed at all. Mission download available on my Discord Channel
Thanks to @HeatblurSimulations for providing a review copy. This review, though, is based on my own paid copy.

Nobody better for Air-to-Ground. Keep it coming, man! Thanks!
Thanks. I appreciate it.
I managed to hit a ship from 8NM, by lofting the bomb a bit, but they don't lock over 10NM! not even on a flat ocean... I bet I could lob a Walleye II at 15nm if this wasn't the case
Wow. That's impressive.
I think that's a game limitation - it doesn't actually model photocontrast seekers, it just has a maximum set distance at which it (or other weapons/TGPs) can lock and a couple modifiers. Like that absurd lock in the video of the bridge (which would have been impossible in real life) or the inability to lock blindingly obvious targets at 15nm.
Another great video! Thanks!
I was wondering, would it be possible to make a tutorial on the textbook employment of the Paveway III? I've seen it described as a "low altitude weapon system", which is kinda different from how it's rigidly employed from the modern jets.
More great stuff Iain.
Thanks!
Thank you Iain.
Love the content. Went into back injury purgatory a week or so before the Phantom came out so I only have a few hours in it. The Walleye should be good practice for flying carefully and smoothly - not much wiggle room picking up a target. Looking forward to some fun this weekend.
Enjoy!
Really enjoy all the history you provide!
Thank you sir!
Another great video; Thank you Sidekick!
My pleasure!
What I really want to see is how should be done properly, by the book. I've been having a lot of fun with that one allbeit in a very "I'm a clown practicing my art" kind of way
Got it. I will put it on the list to take a look at
@@Sidekick65 may i can also ask for a Dive Laydown bomb turtorial - i tried it acording to the manual several times but my cbu87 went always to far
Did pilots actually dislike it when it first arrived? Compared to the Bullpup it seems like a marvel of ease of use, and I would imagine Walleyes would lead to less return trips to the target than a bunch of dumb bombs would.
And of course, thanks for another great video! Really enjoying the phantom series you've got going
Well, I can't tell you where I heard or read that, but I do remember hearing it. I think you are right it was much better than the Bullpup, but I'll bet that it was even more finicky in real-life - especially under an overcast layer - in flat light or with ground fog or mist. And while trying to lock it you had to fly in a straight line for a LOOOOONNNNNG time - longer than a "direct" attack. And then if you failed to lock, you had to do it again - over the defenses who were prepared. I can see where it wore out it's welcome after a while...
That makes a lot of sense. I think in DCS these TV sensors "know" there is an object there, and once it's pointed in the right spot, locking doesn't seem to be an issue. I could absolutely see them being more finicky IRL. Thanks for the explanation.
@@moldy_ DCS doesn't simulate TV guidance, though I don't know of any sim that actually does. I think if it did, the bomb would not actually have been able to lock into the bridge as shown in the video. There's a tree in the way that feels like a more likely target, and not much contrast besides. I imagine in the real world they had to plan their time and even direction of attack for optimal lighting conditions.
Which in monsoon season might have been hard to come by...
