I have a scenario request.
Operation Bolo. It's essentially the greatest aerial deception move the US made in Vietnam and resulted in the destruction of a bunch of the NVA's MiG fleet (MiG 27s I believe, feel free to correct). My question is, could the F15 (C or E models) following the same ROEs as were present at that time have destroyed more or ALL of the MiG? Originally, it was MiGs vs. F4 Phantoms that were equipped with specific pods to lure them out. The ROEs included you couldn't take out Anti-air, you couldn't engage from Beyond Visual range with missles, AND you all had to use a single air way in and out of the area (The Johnson admin ladies and gentlemen) politics aside do you think the F15s could have done a better job if they were available in the 60s?

@@DasSchwarzePhantom well the F-15 has significantly better TWR, acceleration, top speed, and is vastly more maneuverable than the Phantom. The -15s radar is far better, can be used to pick up bandits flying treetop level unlike the phantom's radar. Lets not forget an extra couple decades of missile development.
Phantoms won. F-15s vs mig 17s in the same scenario would be a slaughter.
I love it when you guys do this. I'm a combat veteran and this is so much more fun for me as I get to enjoy our gear and the stuff from my childhood and not have the heaviness of the past weighing in on this. Thank you guys.

I have so many words for this.
1. Probably a good thing the Falcon wasn't in this. It's the space equivalent of trying to do this run in a B-2. It's a freighter, not a fighter.
2. Y-Wings are. outside of B-wings, the worst maneuvering fighters to ever have existed, and would be like running this on hard mode.
3. A-Wings and TIE Interceptors on the other hand would likely be a cheat code. Interceptors don't carry explosive munitions, but A-Wings do carry concussion missiles.
4. Be Gentle, I'm an old school star wars nerd.
What about the shields? I'm fairly sure star wars ships have deflectors or shields and whatnot
I think the Falcon would be more akin to a B1-B Lancer than a B2, personally. X-Wings would be the obvious choice in my opinion. You're probably also correct on the Tie and A-Wings.
@@icarus_falling They do, and it's largely dependent on the class of ship. Y-Wings would have stronger deflectors than X's and A's, but shields only matter about as much as your ability to not take a shot, and they don't regenerate fast enough to deal with any sort of sustained fire.
Far as the second comment goes, you're probably right that B1-B is more accurate for a freighter than a spirit.
The Falcon was a heavily modified light freighter, it's modifications included ones that significantly improved its manoeuvrability and speed. It's probably in between and X-wing and Y-wing but closer to an X-wing in both speed and manoeuvrability. That's one of the big reasons Han wanted Lando to fly it for the attack on the second Death Star as he knew that speed and manoeuvrability coupled with its better firepower and survivability compared to other fighters would give his friend the best chance of survival.
@@simonb4757 In Ratings, the Falcon was not comparable to a snub-fighter. Yes, it was far better armed, armored, and juiced than other light freighters, they were still not comparable to snub-fighters. While I'm aware the orig movies love to portray the fact that Lando used it to effect in Ep. 6, here's the reality of what's being worked with.
The speed of the Falcon: 75 MGLT (Megalight / hr)
The Speed of the Y-Wing: 100 MGLT
The Speed of the T-65 X-Wing: 100 MGLT
The Speed of the A-Wing: 120 MGLT
Without getting into the weeds about what the MGLT's are, or why they matter, all that needs to be known is that the Falcon is 25% slower than the fighters and bombers, and only about 60% the speed of an A-Wing.
Now, when you compare the thing that ACTUALLY matters here, as none of these ships will outrun missiles in atmosphere:
A-Wing: 30.8 m2 VSA (Visible Surface Area)
X-Wing: 157.584 m2 VSA
Y-Wing: 138.69 m2 VSA
Falcon: 889.95 m2 VSA
Why does Visible Surface Area matter? Radar cross section. For comparison, an F/A-18 E Super Hornet has a VSA of 209.66 m2.
So no, my friend, the Falcon does not fall between the X and the Y wing. In this scenario, it just falls out of the sky, as it's radar return of 'Hidenburg' would make it a sitting duck. Would it be able to take shots? Of course. A few of them, anyway. Remind me how many SAM sites and AA guns are in this particular canyon run again?

Watching this, it struck me that using flares could be employed as a weapon over enemy-controlled areas that are prone to wildfires.

What I've learned from this is that my insistence in destroying anything that moved in Rogue Squadron was the correct way to go.
Imagine this retooled into a new Rouge Squadron game. It would be amazing!
I have another mission Cap, the time the JA-37 Viggens escorted an SR 71 with a damaged engine. The Soviets scrambled 20 migs to take out the Blackbird. Not sure if the Viggens are in game but you could use Phantoms or something similar. No planes were shot down. But maybe the boys can rewrite history.

I am a big fan of a completely enclosed and armored cockpit. The introduction of laser weapons into combat aircraft will make this an absolute necessity to protect the pilot. I would not be surprised if we now have the technology to snipe the pilots with laser weapons. All you need to do is BLIND the pilot, you don't even need to kill him. A network of eyes/cameras in conjunction with an augmented/virtual reality headset will make a cockpit window less and less important, except as a backup. Also consider how the USAF is playing around with mirror coatings on the Raptors and F-117's. What do they have up their sleeves?

The Y-Wing is my favorite Star Wars ship besides Slave 1. 2 heavy blasters, ion cannon, 8 bomb bays or missiles, heavy shield generators and extensive armor around the pilots tub like an A-10.
The Entrance/exit to the Exodus canyon at Nuweibaa on the Sinai map is spectacular. Bursting out onto the sea or charging head first into a mountain range.

Great video as always. There is just one thing that has been occurring to me lately and I can not seem to shake it. Simba and Cap give me the vague impression, and I mean do mean vague impression, of Del Boy and Rodney from Only Fools and Horses. And Dark gives a very good Trigger. Why this is, I can not explain, but it does make me quietly chuckle...

Honestly, I'd consider just hitting the target a success. The ugly truth is they considered the pilots in that mission expendable. Everyone knew the mission was more important than their lives.

This damage model might be okay for a fun run... but the Y-wing has shields and armor. And adding the balancing of the engine vs. weapons vs. shield power was possible in the 90ies space combat sims for star wars - that goes to the modder. For the final attack: where are your proton torpedoes, kids. You have guided anti-capital ship weapons on that little bugger.

To be fair, star wars anti air technology is direct fire turbo lasers which is the equivalent of 20mm to ~80mm HE and flak. Not really any anti air missles, unless you get into comics lore then star wars is around 70-80s level technology but with space, hover, and laser tech

3-2) Skip bombing was used by B25s and similar to make those land base type bombers into super naval raiders… vs trying to raid ship by altitude bombing (very hard to hit moving ships at altitude)

The Y-Wing is the SW equivalent of the B1 Lancer - not exactly maneuverable.

*Addition:* Aren't the Y-Wings supposed to have a separate windshield? Also, the main canopy slides aft rather than lifting.
Can I suggest another scenario?
Run the canyon with 6 to 10 pilots in various aircraft. Offensive against the AAA and SAM’s
BUT…. IN SERIES. First guy takes out several of the defences. When he goes down second guy destroys what he can. Ect…
See if you can run it all the way thru with the last guy destroying the target.
