The expression Losing My Religion in the United States means "losing patience" or "losing your mind", nothing linked to religion. Furthermore, the band's song is about unrequited love and not a departure from religion.
Well said
Gracias!! 👍👍
Mostly correct, but in the south where the saying originated, something that made you cuss made you lose your religion. So yeah, it had to do with religion. Also, it doesn't make sense if it doesn't have anything to do with religion.
R.E.M. is the most 90s band of the 80s.
Great point!
Depeche Mode
@@thoru4367 Ah, well done. Another solid entry to the concept. I think you are right, they are even more of that.
@@thoru4367 You should check out skinny puppy
I like how that's Phrased
I was a teenager in the 90s. When MTV came along, i never switched off the TV for 3 years.
''Everybody Hurts'' and ''Shiny Happy People'' are some of the greats from them
Thanks for the suggestion ❤
Kate Pierson (of the B52s) does backing vocals on Shiny Happy People. (Both bands were from Athens, Georgia.)
Shiny Happy People ain’t a great, try Orange Crush..
Basically two songs on the opposite emotional spectrum. But Everybody Hurts is a beautiful and powerful song.
@@thrusta100 Shiny Happy People is incredible, but different strokes and all that
"Everybody Hurts". Thats one of the best of REM. I remember seeing this video for the first time in MTV. I was in my first year of high school and I was mesmerized by the art.
I might know it but ill check it out ❤
I played Everybody Hurts on repeat after a girl broke up with me.
@@BisscuteReacts The song "Everybody Hurts" by REM saved lives, without exaggeration. But definitely watch the Official Video of it. The impact is more keenly felt.
My my, more than 30 years ago. I'm getting old.
R.E.M. had a huge influence on pop music. Ushered in the the age of introspective indi pop. Old time rockers still resent them for that.
I'm definitely looking forward to discovering more from them ❤
R.e.m is a Georgia based band who has been playing for 35, 40yrs and another great song for a amazing reaction is called orange crush,or what frequency Kenneth is a good one one for a reaction video 😮❤
Absolute classic; definitely deserves to be a part of your music journey. ❤🔥
Couldn't agree more❤
"Drive" and "It's the end of the world as we know it" are great songs.
thanks for the suggestion ❤
Oh alright! R.E.M. (pronounced as reading the letters separately and not as word) is a good band! They have lots of good songs, but "Everybody Hurts" is one that's really popular to react to, but you have to do the official music video version. Or if you want an older, more up beat song of their's "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" is a personal favorite that's been used in lots of movies and TV. Or "The One I Love" is another favorite.
Its really true
@@jordipedrenymassague3317 and "Orange Crush"
Yes, yes, but come on: number 1 music video she has to watch is of course: "Shiny Happy People"!
Thank you for the suggestions ❤
@@BisscuteReacts actually... As usual, after I comment, I think of other stuff, but I don't want to overload you with too much because I'm sure you're already getting so much from everywhere, but just this one thing for now. So, I'm pretty sure R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement BTW), eventually migrated to New York, but they're originally from Athens, Georgia, which I believe is just a little college town in the American South. I just bring it up because so is another famous band the B-52s, and it's just funny that they both came out of what must've been such a small scene in an unexpected place. The B-52s also have a lot of songs, but if you're curious, "Love Shack" is a fun one that's one of their biggest hits that I think you'd dig.
Everybody hurts is REM greatest song
Eres, desde ahora. La N° 1..👍👍👍
"Losing my religion" is a Southern USA expression meaning "losing my calmness/cool/sh..t". The dance is likely awkward on purpose based on the motivation and meaning of the song (easily googled). Everybody Hurts is a great video as well.
I see, thank you for the info ❤
Yes that is milk in that jug, this reference is likely due to the english expression 'don't cry over spilled milk' (which means don't get too worked up over small things you can't change) as that appears to be what it's symbolizing.
Oh I see, thank you ❤
I think I recall reading once that to say you're "losing your religion" is a way of saying that you've become very angry, an expression in the southern U.S. I think this song is about him being excessively jealous in one of his relationships, nothing to actually do with religion.
They sometimes call those deep stages of sleep REM SLEEP, when one is dreaming.
REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and it is what the eyes do, when one is dreaming (moving side to side as one dreams).
That song is based on a story by Gabriel García Márquez called An Old Man with Wings.
“Losing My Religion,”
os an expression used in the southern US for losing faith in someone or giving up. It is when you are at the end of caring about something or someone.
One of my favourite songs
oooohhhh... this song is masterpiece
Other songs i think youd like: “radio free europe”, “you are the everything”, “its the end of the world as we know it”, “man on the moon”, “everybody hurts”, “perfect circle”, & “orange crush”.....but there are a ton of great ones from them & u kind of cant go wrong with anything from them pre-1992 ... i think after kurt cobain died, something inside michael stipe died too (the lead singer & lyricist), they were quite close & had plans to make an album together, but it never happened.
Oooh, i just saw another person’s comment, a song called “night swimming” 😭😭😭😭, they were too good.
Talk about “feels”
Noted, thanks for the suggestion ❤
It’s the End of The World or Stand…those are 2 I recommend.
R.E.M. Everybody Hurts you will love the song and lyrics!!!!
Noted ❤
Watching somebody listen,,,,,, I waited all my life for this ,,,thanks
Beautiful song beautiful reacction
This band sings one of the saddest but also greatest ballads of all time called "Everybody Hurts" Very emotional song
You pronounced the band name great! No worries! R...E...M.
This is my favorite of many R.E.M. songs. A rock song that has no electric guitar, but a mandolin, an amazing bass line, and a bopping beat. Add a lyric that really can be open to fun interpretations...it's awesome!!!
The phrase "Losing My Religion" comes from the southern United States (specifically Georgia, where R.E.M. is from). It basically means losing one's temper or feeling frustrated or desperate. The song itself is mostly about romantic feelings and needs.
The official video won all sorts of awards and the song was everywhere in the 1990s...a huge hit.
Thanks ❤
would love to see your reactions on........
1 - Amanda Lear - Follow me
2 - Grace Jones - i've seen that face before
3 - Kate Bush - Wuthering heights
all unique female singers with a unique voice
Thanks for the suggestions, maybe someday ❤
One of my favorites songs of all time, and yes, you said it well (R.E.M.), an alternative rock band from de later 80´s and 90´s, the time of their best successfull era. You must to react to "Happy People" or "Everybody Hurts". Nice react. Kisses...!!!
Thank you, ill note those down ❤
The best collab he did was with Kristin Hersh, the song your ghost, is incredible…
Oh? might have to give it a listen ❤
R.E.M is great, noice choice🤌
Thank you ❤
It gets you in a deep place.
REM stands for rapid eye movements which is something everyone does when they sleep
"Fall on me" and "Driver 8" are great songs :)
People have taken the title too literally for years, but as Michael Stipe explained, the title is a US Deep-South phrase (the band is from Athens, Georgia) meaning to lose your temper or run out of patience. Which makes sense given that he also said it’s about having a crush on somebody.😊
Being from Atlanta, hearing my grandma saying she was so angry at my poor & disgraceful lifestyle that she was close to losing her religion! (Like "you're doing such bad things that I, who loves you, is losing my Faith over it.)
She said it only once. It was dire. But I got straightened out in my life. Her Faith held.
It doesn't help that the video is so full of religious imagery, especially the fallen angel. I personally prefer to take it literally, as a person losing all hope, or losing their faith, fits better with the tone of the song.
R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement... also called "rem") were an 'alternative' rock band formed in the early 80's in Georgia (in the USA 😁) They were signed to an indie label and released a string of fairly successful albums... They were signed to a major record deal in 1988 for a multi-million $$$ contract and delivered the album 'Green' that sold 4 million copies worldwide.
'Losing my religion' was a massive hit single in 1991 that set the whole 90's scene for the 'alternative rock' revolution... R.E.M.'s album 'Out of time' became an international hit, selling 4 million copies in the US, 12 million worldwide... and thrust the band into the spotlight w/ newer bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, Blur, Oasis, Weezer, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, etc.
R.E.M. recorded 'Out of time' and the next album 'Automatic for the people' (1992) acoustically and both albums were huge hits... 'Automatic for the people' sold 15 million copies worldwide & delivered hits like 'Drive'... 'Man on the Moon'... 'Everybody hurts'... 🔥🔥
Their 1994 album 'Monster' was a return to electric rock, followed by a tour and was R.E.M's biggest to date... more hits like 'Bang and blame'... "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" ... However, the band was wilting under the spotlight.
R.E.M was originally - Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (lead guitar), Mike Mills (bass/ keyboards) and Bill Berry (drums)... As they became international superstars, Stipe was revealed to be gay under scrutiny, and he suffered a loss when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain (who was a close friend) took his life in 1994 ... Then drummer Bill Berry began suffering health problems... R.E.M. released 'New adventures in Hi-Fi' in 1996, but sales dropped to 4 million worldwide because of the decline of 90's 'alternative rock'.
In 1997, drummer Bill Berry left the band and R.E.M. became a trio, using session drummers. Subsequent albums like 'Up' (1998) and 'Reveal' (2001) sold well, but not as much as the previous albums... After a few more albums, R.E.M. announced in 2011 that the band was ending after their 15th album 'Collapse into now'... Michael Stipe has stated that he has no plans to bring R.E.M. back.
Other R.E.M. hits - 'Stand'... 'The one I love'... 'Orange crush'... 'The great beyond'... "It's the end of the world..."
Thanks for the info ❤
R.E.M. was founded in Athens, GA, the same college town that gives us the B-52s, Widespread Panic, of Montreal, Drive-by Truckers, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Glands, Olivia Tremor Control, Azure Ray, Reptar, Dreams so Real, Love Tractor, Ravenstone, Japanncakes… REM’s album Automatic for the People was named for the slogan of a local soul food chef, Weaver-D. Weaver catered my fraternity house back in the 80s.
Yeah, we know.
@@dougdougw There is no "we"... you speak for you only... 😈
Also, definitely, check out, The Great Beyond, and also, Man in the Moon!
Your rolling "R" is soooo cute.
You are doing great, Young Lady!!!
Deep dive into this massively talented group is a must bisscute
Absolutely!
Got it ❤

Pink Floyd Another Brick in the Wall
must watch for sure!!!
R E M, Rapid Eye Movement! I think this is where their name originated from? The part of sleep when you dream.
Stipe's as you said "awkward" dance here it's just on point! It fitted just perfect. It's been 30 years already since I saw this masterpiece for the first time. Those movements amazed me so much then. And they still amaze me. They just catch you once and forever.
My & my kids loved that dance 😂
R.E.M. were such a talented band, not the best musicians in the world, but capable of crafting some of the finest alternative rock songs of the 80s 90s 00s. Check out Fall on me, The one I love, Man on the Moon, What’s the frequency Kenneth, Imitation of life
automatic for the people an all time great cd

My mom said onced this song is literally a painting in a video .. a work of art posssibky from centuries ago ...
Hi Bisscute! I came across your channel. Losing my religion is a term used to describe how you are acting or thinking against your personality or beliefs.
Great Band
This inevitable theme in my playlist
Greetings
This song from the album Out of time was their breakthrough song. You could hear it everywhere. From the same album Shiny happy people is a happy catchy song.
The followup album Automatic for the people has brilliant melancholic songs. I like most Man on the moon.
Michael Stipe has this thing they call "aura" . Saw him live 3 times, and he is a way bigger than that he stands.
"Man on the Moon" should definitely be the next one you're going to listen and E-Bow The Letter feat. Patti Smith
Oh? ill keep that in mind ❤
I cry when I hear this song 😂❤
Radio Free Europe, released in 1981 is their first hit. Give it a try
REM's music spans many sounds and generations, truly one of a kind band!
Plenty of their songs have been recommended here. Have heard of the band “Ra” song is called “Do You Call My Name”
Don't think iv heard of them ❤
This is a classic song thanks for playing this not many no the band
„R.E.M.“ (each letter pronounced individually) is perfectly correct. The three letters are an abbreviation of the term „rapid eye movement“, which happens in a phase of sleep, when you dream.
Thanks ❤
R.E.M everybody hurt.
Another good song.
Added ❤
This is later R.E.M., and their most popular mainstream single. Their earlier stuff is good, more rocking. Try "Orange Crush", "Radio Free Europe" & "Driver 8".
Wow there is so much, dont just listen to the hits but explore deeper - Uberlin, It Happened Today, Accelerate, Nightswimming, Man on the Moon, Bad Day .... there is so much to explore from this fantastic band
You are a star!!! I would change your nickname in a-thousand-time-cute! 😊
R.E.M. Live best Music DVD i ever had
Hi girl, my name is Pistonburner, and welcome back to my comment! Or if you're here for the very first time: welcome!
You definitely, absolutely, without any shadow of a doubt _must_ watch R.E.M.'s music video Shiny Happy People!! And absolutely with the original video! You will love it so much for sure! It also has guest vocalist Kate Pierson from the B-52's.
Also: hurry up and watch the original music video of: Dee-Lite - Groove is in the Heart! It's one of the best songs and music videos in history!
Both of the above are peak 90's, and 1,000,000,000% full of positive energy! Groove is in the Heart has the most amazing cool groove, and you have to see the dance moves!
Noted ❤
REM shyni happy people. Buen video, Bisscute. Saludos

Haha ❤
this song is evergreen...awsome
Just watching again,,i love watching good to hear❤️❤️❤️
Thank you❤
Everybody Hurts and It's the End of the World as we Know It are definitely required listening from this band. These guys were pretty much untouchable during the 90s.
Amazing, hopefully someday soon ❤
I’ve been listening to R.E.M. for a few years, and a couple of songs that you could try:
What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?
It’s The End of The World As We Know It.
Lotus.
The One I Love.
E-Bow The Letter (singer Patti Smith does backing vocals on this).
Perfect Circle.
Try Not To Breathe.
Thank you for the recommendations ❤
I always thought this song was about religion as a kid. Its about him struggling with a failing or unrequited relationship. "Losing my religion" down south has the meaning that you are desperate and dont know what to do anymore. He coupled that with his sudden popularity "thats me in the spotlight".
It's been a minute since I heard this. "Stipe has repeatedly stated that the song's lyrics are not about religion. The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression. He told Q that "Losing My Religion" is about "someone who pines for someone else. It's unrequited love, what have you." Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" (1983) by The Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.'"

I see, thanks for the info ❤
You said it all just fine! I dunno who is giving you grief? You nailed it.
I love your accent, so even if you say something "wrong", it's endearing and adorable. 🙂
Thank you so much, glad you liked it ❤
I love the "rennaisance'ness" of the visuals, the colour palette, it's very cool, along with the funky tune and movement, it's great.
You will probably like "The world I know" by Collective Soul
Another great song if theirs "Man On The Moon" a song about the late legendary comedian Andy Kaufman
“Losing my religion” is an obsolete southern (U.S.) slang term meaning getting angry. If someone says “you are about to make me lose my religion” means “you’re about to make me too angry to let me not lose my temper and do something very bad”
I think hearing you sing this song would be the most beautiful version ever.
Just learn the words, the music.
I love this song and this video.
This was my favorite song for 20 years
In the 19th century the Comte de Toqueville observed that in order to have intelligent discourse it is necessary for the parties concerned to first define their terms. You might be repulsed by, or you might be indifferent to religion, or you might be enamored by your particular brand of religion, but this is how I understand religion:
‘re’ - a prefix, indicating a repetition, e.g. re-member, re-turn, re-lax. To go back to.
‘lig’ - ligare, Latin, ‘to bind’, ‘ to tie down’. e.g. lig-a ture, lig-ament.
‘ion’ - a suffix, ‘an action or condition’.
‘re-lig-ion’ - to repeatedly go back to a state of bondage.
“Everybody Hurts” is a banger and has a great music video.
Looking forward to listening to it ❤
REM - Leave is the one of most tragically sounded song you ever heard and will hear in your life :P
I believe that was a Mandolin not a guitar. And yes, for me it is the highlight of the song.
Ahh I see, thanks❤️
I recommend also another R.E.M. song 'Shiny Happy People' with vocalist from B-52.
Orange Crush & The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite are another two masterpiece songs & videos to boot.................
The three albums that stay with me from the 90's are R.E.M. -"Out of Time" (with this song), Hootie and the Blowfish - "Cracked Rear View", and Alanis Morissette - "Jagged Little Pill." I enjoy them just as much today as I did when they came out. Thanks for this reaction.
Agree with George Nox, Everybody Hurts or Shiny People. I lean towards Everybody Hurts but both are great REM songs.
Great, great band. I consider myself privileged to have had the opportunity to see them live. One of the greatest concerts I have ever seen.
REM one of the great American bands.nightswimming is a classic.everybody hurts I guarantee will make you cry.they are an amazing band
Hopefully in the future ❤

Hello, you're welcome. I liked it too ❤
Definitely check out It's the End of the World as We Know It. A song hard as hell to sing along to.
So many great REM songs to try, I envy your journey - Imitation of Life, Bad Day, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, It's The End of The World As We Know It, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts, Shiny Happy People, Stand, Night Swimming, The One I Love,
R.E.M.'s songs are so great, sometimes catchy, sometimes melancholic or both. That's why they are one of my favourite bands. I'm glad that you give their music a chance. You should listen to more of their songs, they were quite rightly famous.
I remember reading that they chose the name out of a dictionary because "they liked the dots" in it.
Also, I always wanted to see more of that weird but fascinating dancing in the video.
Hey ! This is the End of the World (as we know it) and Everybody Hurts : 2 major REM tracks you might enjoy !
This is their best song for my money. Drive maybe a personal favorite and End of the World the most popular..
