If a submarine has to surface, then it will surface at night unless there is an emergency, it is entering a port, or crossing the Suez Canal. Black paint is good camouflage at night. North Korean submarines rarely submerge and are mostly used for propaganda purposes. It doesn't matter what you paint your submarine if you never use it for anything.
I will explain this as a submariner, now we have submarines, in WW2 and around there were no subs, these were DIVING BOATS, traveling fast at the surface but slow downstairs.. now it is 180 around fast downstairs but quit slow surfaced, subs are waterdrop shaped, not sharp with a bow like a fast ship ;)

Yeah, it's around 4 months or so, depending on how much you cram into the ship. The bigger bottleneck is the crew as they can go stircrazy locked in the ceamped ship for too long, so usually subs spend much less time fully submerged.
once heard a story about a sailor. he died because of heart problems, one week into the trip. No't allowed to abandon the patrol they where on the rest of the crew stuffed him into the freezer. They had to eat a LOT of ice cream that day.

NK subs have no rubber coating to absorb sonar waves. They are easy to detect by surface ships and are noisy. Coffins for their crews. Food is probably not that good either.

chinese ones used to be blue before the 2000s, and those not retired ones were later painted black. to be honest, i am quiet fond of the blue color, it has this strong cold war vibe.
It can be opened for ventilation. It's the copy of a Soviet design, all Soviet subs have windows in the conning tower because they operate north of the Arctic circle quite often and standing out on the unprotected conning tower is a recipe for severe frostbite.

The Royal Navy experimented with painting nuclear submarines blue at one point. IIRC it was a Trafalgar class.
