    I had debilitating mental illness most of my life including chronic depression and anxiety, suicidality, bipolar II, ADHD, OCD, binge eating, and borderline personality disorder. At 41, I couldn't go on and started planning my permanent departure including urn shopping, service details, final wishes etc .. But something told me one of the treatments I haven't tried was a complete diet overhaul so I made a deal - if I clean up my diet and it doesn't help me, I'm outta here. I chose the Ketogenic way of eating. It's been over 4 years now, I've never had any medication nor any bipolar episodes since. Nutrigenomics and metabolic interventions, not meds or doctors, saved my life. If I listened to doctors, I wouldn't be here. I was recently on BipolarCast in CZcams.       Congrats. I wanted to check out with panic attacks 30 years ago. Wish I knew this info back then. Keep up the good diet. Staying busy helps too. I'm fine now btw.

      Mia, I just watch full episode that you mention above. First of all I want to tell you that you are incredibly beautiful woman, big eyes, lips, curly hair…just wow! That was my first impression when i started watching the video, then I cry when you talk about your childhood and your brother, I have strong emotion when I imagine any kids having any kind of pain, or any problem that instantly tears my eyes. Then you mention chronic pain in the body on keto, thank you for that, until now I believe got some virus or something, thank you for mention that. I’m in that stage at the moment, ever bone in my body hurts me, last night I had very strong pain in back of my head and in my neck, I forced myself to sleep as long as possible since I sleep very little on ketogenic diet, after 12h of sleep I wake up tired my head and neck pain stoped but my body hurts still, I have this feeling when I got very high temperature like 39,5 then I feel like this, every bone is in pain, even skin hurt me when I touch it, but now I don’t have any temperature but still in pain. I want to thank you for mention that and help me understand what’s going one. Can you tell me how long you were in this phase? I’m fasting for 20h at this point and feed myself in period of 3pm to 7pm. Thanks God you find your peace, world is much better place with you I’m sure, look how many ppl you influenced and how much of us relate with your story! Wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart and congrats to everything you achieved, you well deserved that!

      This is literally me! Even down to the age and making plans to take my life. Decided on the diet over hall too! Things already improving. Ketogenic like you but last night I had dairy and felt AWFUL. Stomach hurt, anxiety through the roof again and couldn’t get to sleep. Do you eat dairy or have you had the same experience with it? Also what carbs do you eat if any? Thank you x

      Thst plastics, @@tagaway6173 are such a toxic material it will keep polluting our air and waterways for many years after we're dead and most 'non-food' products sold at supermarkets are wrapped and over wrapped in them; mostly unnecessarily . Some of those plastics leach into our food and goes into our systems with dire consequences.

      @@MetubeCZcams when people live to be close to 100 years of age, they almost always say they have a sweet tooth. Betty White who is nearing 100, apparently eats hot dogs and french fries often (daily) and her favorite treat is red vines. There are emotional causes for inflammation.

    GREAT interview! I am a cancer patient in remission. Was diagnosed a year ago. After going through chemo and radiation I suffered terrible depression. Consequently, doc put me on depression medication. It sucked! I started researching food as healing. I’ve been off medication for 5 months, completely cut out ALL sugar, eat 10 cups of vegetables a day, fish 3 times a week (do my best), no coffee after 1 pm, probiotics, etc. I’ve really noticed a difference. I love how this interview doesn’t prescribe a “one size fits all” approach. Love these two! Thank you for this fabulous information 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Same here . . . just went through 15 months of cancer treatment. Handled the treatment well but went into a deep depression due to looking for employment after cancer treatment. I have to clean up my eating habits and exercise more. Your picture is beautiful btw.

    Thank you for this as a sufferer of ptsd and all of the things that fall under that diagnosis. I have been watching your podcasts. I honestly just had the thought last night that i wish there was someone who could help my diet improvement to help with my mental health as well as attacking all areas of my life in the hopes of healing my body, mind, spirit. I wake up this morning and i find this. This man is no doubt a missing piece to the puzzle. Im thankful you both exist. I cant wait to read the book.       Diet and certain supplements plus trauma informed / somatic experiencing, nervous system focused healing is helping me. "Mental" health is definitely not all mental. People like Peter Levine bessel van der kolk and irene lyon helped.

      @@kissakissa4779 I challenge anyone that is feeling depressed to pick a day when you feel that way and go outside with a back pack full of water and whatever you need for a few hours and walk and walk and walk. Go to a nature spot where all you can see is trees and you can't see a person. Do some deep breathing.
      When you walk back home after 3 hours, notice how you feel as you get closer to home. HOME, inside your house is where the depression lives. You are going back to the depression.
      Repeat this the next day and notice how you feel when you leave the house (depression) and then when you are in nature and have walked a long time. Now again, notice how you feel on the way back home and as you enter the house when you know you have so many tasks, or a dirty house waiting, or a husband you don't like. 4 kids? Barking dogs?
      Depression is your SOUL talking to you. LISTEN. What is your depression telling you? You know what you don't like about your life, but you keep it secret.

      Sherri Lynn - your depressed house is telling you that it's dirty, neglected, and unkempt - and if you'd spend the time cleaning & nurturing it, that you did walking and walking out in Nature, it would not feel so depressed! 😂

    Anxiety was my super power for years until I had a major health episode 13 years ago that took a year of recovery. Now I can't deal with anxiety at all. I finally found out about the link between gut health and anxiety and it saved my life.

    I wanted to offer my perspective on the "city bathing 2%" topic: I have taught cooking classes at an urban after school program for teens. Most of them are 3rd generation or more urban kids whose families have been poor for generations. Some are children of immigrants. The differences in the understanding of food and their valuing of it as an enriching part of their lives (as opposed to convenient or satiating fuel) between the kids who have been urban for generations vs immigrants who either grew or marketed daily or lived more seasonally is remarkable. Taking them all to a bodega type market (not even a farmer's market) and connecting them with the tactile and individual components of the meals we would later cook together seemed to trigger an ownership and investment into what they were cooking and eating. so while I don't think everyone has to love rural life and want to "meet the farmer", there is something powerful about lifting the veil between the end product to be eaten, and its source, even if it's saying "the guacamole you eat on that burrito you grabbed after school is made of these elements and this is how and why you choose each to make it really good guac. You can make it amazing yourself and you are worth making amazing food for!" And while you may have the discipline and intellectual approach to food that enables you to be an optimal eater without that visceral connection to its source or its elements, I find that to be unusual many people really need that link in order to be willing to do the work of good, healthy eating.

    Thanks Tom & Dr Drew, as someone with schizophrenia with a new youtube channel - I realised about five years ago the strong relationship between nutrition and exercise and mental health. I've been fighting with local psychiatrists ever since as they refuse to look into anything just pills. Once you realise how mental illness works within you you become so aggravated and at the same time motivated.

      Keep running experiments on yourself try cutting out all grains for two or three months and see how you feel I have extreme anxiety and I feel the best when I'm eating massive amounts of fruit and then just a small amount of meat and then a little bit of salad and that's really makes up my entire diet + Xtreme exercise deep breathing and meditation try to get rid of all the stressful people in your life and reduce stress as much as possible and get everything organized your room and your life and that accounts for up if you did all those things that would account for 75% of any sort of mental illness I'm just be careful if you're on any benzodiazepines you have to taper off those things so so slowly

      Yeah, food and stress really affects mental health. I get tested on gluten: celiac and allergy, I was clean, no allergy, no celiac desease, but my thoughts sound in my head when I eat gluten, I even can say where there is gluten just by listening to my thoughts.
      But the worst thing is what I am allergic to: sunflower oil, mayonnaise from sunflower oil, margarine from sunflower oil, celery, psilium. Then I lose it. Maybe on several minutes but it happens.

    nobody is by default an anxious person, anxiety comes from a damaged digestive system (worsen by any kind of external stress). In my case, I suffered anxiety at 33 years old for the first time in my life. Meds didn't do anything at all. Finally, after 1 year of trying to figure out the root cause, it came from NAFD due to my SAD diet. With a very low carb diet I am healing all!

    OMG thank you so much Tom and Drew, so great to have my intuition confirmed. I have a history of depression and anxiety in my adult life. I don't have it now! Which is weird because I was diagnosed with M.S. 3 years ago. You'd think I'd be more depressed. Lol😆
    I changed my food plan, cleaned it up. Got into nature. Moved to the country and by the sea in summer, meditate and make choices based on my overall health and wellbeing. I'm reversing my MS symptoms radically which was not my initial prognosis. I got myself out of a wheelchair and you wouldn't know I had it if you met me now. I have been wondering why my mental health is improved and suspected as much. Thank you. You made my day. We all have a choice. Your show Tom makes it so much easier to make good choices. Much gratitude. 🙏💖🌺🌈

      Im suspecting I may be getting MS symptoms- were trying to narrow down whats going on still.... Luckily nothing too debilitating will come of whatever I have but I was really worrying for a while until I realized no matter WHAT it is I have, I can improve my symptoms and overall health with some nutrition and lifestyle efforts and this comment here has been so inspirational to me no matter what comes of my situation!       I had no idea till my late 20’s that picking the skin around my nails was a sign of my anxiety. It was so bad my cuticles would bleed and be scabby. Now I’m a lot better and don’t pick at my cuticles anymore thankfully.

      I take that because I'm pregnant but didnt know that. Choline inositol in one pill. NAC as well but amazon and some retailers just pulled it from the market. If you can get your lab work done its better to know what you need. And retest because I've been low in vitamin d but then I went too high taking 500iu every other day or two. Also if you have mthfr mutation you definitely need the more bio available forms of the b vitamins. The methylated complex didn't help me because some of the forms aren't right, I wasnt super low but on the low end of a lot despite supplementing for over a year.
      From a migraine scientist angela a stanton facebook group I've learned for migraineurs like me we should take b2 riboflavin 5 phosphate form only, thiamine in allithiamine, lipothiamine or benfotiamine. Magnesium complex or glycinate. Can take a bit of vitamin c ascorbic acid if it helps you. But besides that you should test your blood which can be difficult to get doctors to test b vitamins and homocysteine.
      I found my mehtylfolate, thiamine, b2, b12, b9 are all on the lower end despite supplementing a while. Same with magnesium. Now taking a sublingual/lozenge b12 methylcobalamine adenosine supplement too and added the correct form of b2. They didnt check my b6 or homocysteine or vitamin a but st least I got part of the puzzle. Oh and my ferritin was low yet my hemoglobin was high so the lower b12 and probably vitamin c isn't getting the iron into storage reserves. She explained it to me thst some people have trouble absorbing things no matter how nutrient dense you eat (I make myself eat liver and egg yolks and oysters and clams and eggs) some of us need to supplement for our best health no matter the diet. Could be due to our ancestors eating the wrong foods

    Eat. Just eat more. High protein clean foods. Thats the only thing that "cured" my anxiety. I think peterson once said it, if you feel anxious eat smth substantial and see how you feel after.

    i love this discussion, thank you! As a practitioner of functional medicine I am always fascinated by the debate between city vs country life and nature. it seems to me that city life triggers adrenaline, it’s fun and exciting but is all about external connections, extrinsic triggers and being outward-looking. Being in woodlands or on a coastal walk,, by contrast, gives you time and space to ‘hear’ yourself and look within, which can be massively challenging! Distractions are so much easier in the short term! How many times do people in offices or the city say “I can’t hear myself think!” Wherever our safe, quiet space is, it’s important to have that balance as well. There is a place for both depending upon where we are in our life, in my view. I would love to hear what others think!

      There's lots of challenges living out in the bush, obviously they are different from the city challenges. It seems the off grid lifestyle is romanticized a lot on social media, I've been off grid on my bush block here in Australia, just me and my dog, for about 8 months now and there were 4-5 months setting up before that. It's been a brutal slog and it still is very challenging transforming a vacant block to a livable space. I doubt the average person could hack it tbh- I'm yet to have running/hot water.. so no shower here. The kitchen is outside and not protected from wind and rain, toilet is purely composting, so I have to empty all of that in to a pallet bay composting system for it to break down. It's all a bit overwhelming sometimes, especially when you are trying to heal the gut, heal from anxiety, depression etc.

      The best is probably carnivore. If you don't want to go that far, do keto or ketovore. Ketovore is more meat and less veggies than keto. Research YouTuve for Dr. Ken Berry. H has videos on diabetes and keto.

    I will say I never noticed this before but Going from being on keto for the better part of 6 months and then taking a few weeks off for the holidays I physically could feel the depression. Like someone could feel thirst. I of course was eating holiday sweets and lots of carbs but today I went back on keto and immediately felt better...even though I did end up having a few potatoes and carrots with my roast this is the best I've felt In the 3 weeks I was off.

    8:45 great point!!! From keto to anything else, we're not made for dieting. Eating from all the good, natural food in a right balance that's the way to go!
    And eat what's in season and locally grown and bred
    19:35 oh it does matter !! I've got my neighbour with an orange orchard and whenever it's harvest time I get a box full of them! This connects people's hearts! And food is throughout any culture a certain way to connect! I've grown up in the 70ies in Europe where society was still "wholesome" and now living in North Africa where still ppl live more or less that wholesome life. Greetings from a very sunny place :)

    We have very little data about what happens in our brain through human contact and emotions. Once we accept that and start making emotional connection with our food supply chain (literally) I’m confident we’ll see some changes for the better. Trust and confidence via connections to fellow humans rather than brands will likely greatly reduce our anxiety and inflammation.

    My understanding is that the difference between growing your own food and buying from stores, is the deep joy and gratitude we now feel that Mother Earth gave us her fruit! Or vegetable. In addition studies have shown that growing our own vegetables produces specifically ingredients that are complementing the health deficit of the origins farmer! There’s some amazing research out there! The broccoli in your garden has a different vitamin and mineral content than the one from the market. The detoxification from each veggie has started specifically in that region with that air pollution and that water etc... they are our “ friends “ :-)

      Sushing kids is just completely unnatural.
      However, if you watch old movies or biographical movies, people (of European descent) in large cities, tenements and tall buildings often had a piano or some other musical instrument in the place and I don't think the neightbours complained so much.
      Intolerance of others in high density neighbourhoods will not end well. And it is rising.

    I love coffee but you can't drink it and not expect to be anxious. Try just drinking it on the weekends. I just quit drinking it for the millionth time. I feel much better and the withdrawal has taken a few weeks to get over.

    i’m 15 and was in a mental hospital for 3 months and gained 50lb while there my sister got killed and i’ve never been this heavy in my life i got so depressed once i got out which lead me to start smoking weed again after awhile i had my first drugged induced psychotic episode which was absolutely traumatizing and it happened at a gathering for my dead sister which wasn’t the best but now i’m trying to lose the weight i gained in the mental hospital and i haven’t so far it’s been a year and i eat so healthy as now i’m trying to get off my medication and find more natural ways to cope and heal

    There are always stressors (environmental and internal). However, there is foundational basis for any response - the optimal or suboptimal function of the brain. A brain, functioning physically optimally is better able to rank stressors, react more appropriately and with better logic. This provides more time and energy for more decisions and experiences. My sense is that psychology should be two pronged: 1. Encouraging optimal brain function with ketogenic metabolism and exercise and 2. Working through stressors to determine best methods for coping

    Humanity's journey out of Africa spread across the globe and settled via the coast. Seashell middens (meal waste dumps) are common early evidence of human activity. The fact that the human body does not hold onto magnesium is another indicator that seafood was an original food source.

    I've found similarly. I was eating an omnivorous 'healthy whole food' normal ie high carb, lowish fat diet for years. Cooked with those nasty seed oils because they were flogged as being healthy. It gave me gall bladder issues & incipient fatty liver disease. I ditched most carbs, ditched seed oils, added in more meat, yoghurt, bone broth, & later, red meat. Lost 10 kilos, All bloods returned to good levels, arthritis down from disabling to negligible. Anxiety & depression greatly reduced. Upon later reintroducing red meat, I noticed increased energy & a feeling of equanimity, despite facing obstacles etc. I used to have gout, but current day 'normal' carbs was the necessary substrate for that to occur. My diet is now mostly whole food, higher in fats, mostly olive oil & saturated, animal proteins, some veg, a bit of fruit, & some carbs here & there, mostly from yoghurt, milk, or occasional rice or sourdough bread. I recently ditched a1milk for a2/jersey milk (we can buy cold pressed raw jersey milk, here) & cheese, & notice less general allergy symptoms. (Lots of grass alkergies, here) each change makes a difference, but to be honest, I'm not even that diligent about it. If we're in a dash & grab food on the run, I'll still eat a big burger, just with an extra patty of bacon, no sauces or fries, & ditch half the bun, or we visit rellies on the weekend, I just select ok from what's there, & eat the cake if it looks good. I'm not that keen of seafood by try & eat it once a week. Those old druids were right in calling salmon & hazelnuts the foods of wisdom. I guess they generally ate them seasonally, in moderate amounts & usually fresh.

      Insane! What are your cholesterol numbers? I switched to whole food plant based no meat dairy eggs processed foods no oils, very occasional breads, pastas and it saved my life I’m getting younger I swear!

      @@JnTmarie , I don't have my results to hand, but they were all well within the normal ranges. I've never had any kind of high cholesterol, anyway. I confess, despite the weight loss, I felt some trepidation going back to my doctor for the second tests, as I am aware of the high sat. fat nature of my diet, it was a choice I'd decided to try, based upon a range of evidence, & as it pans out, he & I are both delighted with the result. I asked should I have a cac scan, & he said there was no indication of any need & so it would be unneccesary exposure to radiation. It is not "insane", when you look at some of the mechanisms behing arterial plaquing, or other risk factors behind other health issues. It appears that saturated fat & red meats have been conflated into a paradigm of risk that ignores commonly occuring co-factors. Many high & lesser profile 'health' organisations & clinicians also, took at face value the purported health claims around seed oils & assorted other dietary tropes (so did I), & now many depend on revenue from endorsing such products. (heart foundation ticks on margarines, etc). I've elderly people in my family, 97- 105, they got there on a traditional mostly local diet, & that tied in with the research I'd read. Meat off the farm or from the beach, dairy from the farm, A serve of potato was one spud, not a pile of them, carrots, peas, beans, cabbage & seasonal fruit. Plus cakes, dried fruit & nuts & biscuits on special occasions. A lunch out droving was black tea, corned beef on home made bread, & a mandarin. I certainly have more food choices than they did. Personally I would be in a world of inflammatory pain within 24 hours on your diet, but if it's presently working for you, then good.
