  • Stanley Livingston was a tot when he landed his first on-screen role. He went on to work with some of the biggest names in showbiz including Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, David Niven and Doris Day. But it was his role as Fred MacMurray’s middle son Chip that brought him global fame. Stanley opens up about his acting career and reveals why he left it all behind.

Beginning in 1946, there was a yearly Christmas Lane parade in Huntington Park, CA. Pat Boone later became the Grand Marshall and it was televised. When I was a little girl, I had a crush on “Chip” from ‘My
Three Sons’ (who was 8 years older) and during the Christmas parade, I ran up to the convertible car where Fred MacMurray (Steven Douglas), Don Grady (Robbie Douglas), Stanley Livingston (Chip) and Barry Livingston (Ernie) were in.
I was able to shake hands with Barry who was sitting on the outer edge.

I distinctly remember seeing ads an for the "Thanksgiving Reunion with the Partridge Family and My Three Sons" and being excited.
After watching I definitely had mixed feelings, kinda like finding out your cousins from you're favorite aunt/uncle looked different because they all had different fathers!!!
By 1977 things had changed. The country had changed. Society had changed and I had changed!!!!
We were now watching shows like All in the Family, All My Children, One Day at a Time (CBS version), etc.
I suppose one could say a fairy tale view of family life vs a real life view........I really, really like fairy tales!

They actually do, but Barry's glasses hid the resemblance a lot. Whenever Ernie would take off his glasses, you could see it. Such as in Barry's first appearance on the show in the episode My Friend Ernie. Chip and Ernie are having a sleepover, and we briefly see them sleeping peacefully in bed towards the end, so of course Barry isn't wearing his glasses.

My favorite memory is when Chip was marrying Polly, there was a flashback of 6 year old Stanley doing a scene with Fred where Chip spoke of not liking girls with “their goo-goo eyes”. How many other actors would play father and son for 12+ years? No CGI to de-age actors, just a life together. A great scene that spoke of a great relationship.

    • @millenniumman75

I enjoyed this interview very much. Stanley comes across as very down to earth and very likable person. Very nice and very straightforward in his responses. Stanley mentioned about how there had been an interest by a producer ( I think it was), to have a program with three daughters instead of three sons but of course that never happened. Actually, I am curious about that. There were all the programs in those years, late 50's, into the 60's, where the starring child or teen actors were mostly boys,
Jon Provost in "Lassie", "My Thee Sons" "Ozzie & Harriet", "Dennis the Menace" "Circus Boy" are the programs that come to mind..
Yes, there was "Father knows Best" with one little girl, one teen girl and one teen boy, but just wondered why there were not more TV shows (in the 1950's and into early/mid 60's) with just girls? I know there was "Gidget" later, but I am referring mostly to the late 50's and early 60's time period where there didn't seem to be many girls starring in TV programs.
Maybe Stan knows the answer to that one?

Stanley is a classy gentleman. Great idea to assist fellow actors. With a grandson who is also an actor and producer after college and now working on a Masters in theater, it has caused me, and probably the family, to see actors in a far more sympathetic light. Its a grandmother’s view, and grannies can be very protective indeed, even of the youngsters (and at my age, practically everyone is a youngster) who are working or moving up the ladder in a challenging career.
So, thank you. I am also very glad to see a young lad i enjoyed watching in his young career, who not only survived being a child actor, but who, as a veteran in that field, is engaged in helping other actors. I hope you continue to do well!

I loved My Three Sons.❤ I had 3 older brothers, LOL. My younger sister and I had the exact same bedroom suit as Chip and Ernie - colonial maple ordered from Sears, LOL. I collected stamps like Ernie. I thought Fred McMurray was the perfect TV Dad, so calm snd understanding. Such a great show! Thanks for this interview!

Stanley briefly attended Bancroft Junior High School in Los Angeles around 1962 or 1963 as I recall. He had already been on My Three Sons so everyone knew him. He was very low key but didn’t stay long. That’s my memory of him.

I happened upon this accidentally. “Chip” you look great and I guess I knew Ernie was your real bro but for some reason I forgot. Glad to see our childhood heroes are alive and doing well. Working with William Demarest had to be a story all in itself. William Frauley too for that matter.. the old guard of early Hollywood.

What a fun interview. So much I never knew. I was telling my husband about the interview and confessed at 63 that I had a crush on Chip. He looked at me and replied "really?" I then told him I had a crush on Kurt Russell too.🤣

Another wonderful interview Craig! As a kid in the 60's and 70's, I watched TONS of TV... your interviews with all of these former child stars are not only informative, but so comforting! It may sound strange, but I feel like they're all members of my family! THANK YOU! 📺🩷💜🙂

Really great to hear your story, Stanley. You're a couple of years older ( 3yrs) Very articulate, interesting and a good memory. I grew up with you. You were able to forge new interests in the business, and it sounds like you aren't retired. It's nice that all the sons, survived childhood, didn't go off the deep end and prospered. Thanks My 3 Sons still airs at 7:30Am M-F in the Bay Area, however you probably don't get residuals.

Mr. Livingston really looks great! In fact, I think he is more handsome as he grew older. Saw him in person for the first time at a parade in El Cajon, California many years ago (late 1960's). He and his brother, Barry, were both sitting in a convertable, waving at the crowd as the car drove by. Very nice man.

Great interview with Stanley Livingston. I loved the story of William Frawley and the metal film cans crashing on the floor during Vivian Vance's rehearsing to distract her. 😀
