      Same happened to me. I was 10 when I first heard the album. Sometimes I wonder if I’m being objective when I think it’s at the peak of all rock masterpieces. And I always conclude that I am lol.

    • @Dogboy1960
      @Dogboy1960 Před 4 lety +1

      You're as "objective" as is possible. Montreal Canadians legendary Goalie from the 1970s was once asked, "when was the golden age of hockey?" His answer seems to apply to Rock just as well as it does to hockey. "the Golden age was when-ever you were 12 years old!" Seems right. Our "heroes" are all larger than life when we're this age. Greats come along when you're older too.......but they never reach that same status, regardless of how amazing they might be. I can appreciate Van halen but he's just a guy who plays really well. Hendrix came along and was gone too early for me. I was just a little kid not paying attention in the 1960s. At 12 though I was buying my first records and Machine Head was the ultimate when I first heard it. For me too.......biggest influence that had me going out to get that first guitar too/

    With a period correct Coke bottle, after having bought the Grand Hotel, and removing the rooms for the structure for posterity, and future video opportunities- we are treated with this. There's no doubt it blows away the 2 part Collage 20 minute film I made years ago now. Me twiddling on a broken Strat body with no strings, that I snuck back into the Coliseium to record. I know this is true, as it gnaws in my belly at this moment still. But what can I do ? The 2nd part of the Super 8 video, made years later, with myself and a Candace look alike, was the piece de resistance to complete the vignette, and I'm happy with the way it came out. The 'ol mangled strat body I painfully won in '78 at the Coliseum in Houston, was there clearly, to tie the ideas together. Other artifacts ? A dude in the front row had crutches that night. Ritchie gallantly, and with grand style accepted one to play the slide solo on MOTSM, and just as gallantly went down to one knee, like a knight to return it , like it was the sword from the Stone presented to King John. He left with one single crutch, after I explained to him that he could make it to his car with one, but both would leave his knees shattered. I was pissed not to have the neck, but ya can't win 'em all. The guy that had the neck, big and double ugly had explained a similiar scenario to me, not 30 minutes earlier. He punctuated it with the swelling black eye I then had. He would have a problem getting my new pickups, I assured him, and we settled there. Discretion is the better part of valor. So, I compromised with him as well, at one crutch; taking care to note the actual crutch it was, and no punctuation was needed. So I got the Strat Body, and a crutch- which made it into the movie too, her head kinda bobs up and down, and you can see it then,on the downbeat, against the far wall, in the "medieval" wing of my condo. It WAS impressive, I reckoned. The Candace look alike was something else, a real actress alright. Her performance was outstanding. However, today- a dark day, I have seen this, and my efforts pale comparatively. And for the record he missed a note during the chromatic run down the E string. Just saying. Alas, I have no Marshall Major, either.

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 6 lety

      Hi Chalda, thanks for your nice comments! My 2xKT88 Major is a modified circuit based on the factory mods made for Blackmore at the Marshall factory. VERY loud. :) I'm using a Rockcrusher attenuator at -3dB before my 2x12 cab with Scumback H55s so I don't blow out the speakers. You should be OK connecting it direct to your 4x12 cabinet.
      Also, I put the 2x12 cabinet inside an isolation cab that lets me play at full volume without bothering anyone. This is key to obtain the full sound.
      Cheers.

    I know he used an AC30 in the grand hotel (as far as the photos go?) But your tone sounds identical. Do you have any information on what he used, and I'd really be interested on your Marshall Major build!

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks! I initially thought too that the AC30 was the Machine Head amp and recorded many tests with my HW2 modified to '62/'63 spec to match Blackmore's build, but I could only get so close. Then I read Didi Zill's account of what he saw during the recordings and he mentioned the Marshall stack being by itself in the hallway, which made me think. A picture on his "Deep Purple" book shows the Marshall Major head with the modded HS booster on top, indicating that that was the amp in use and not the Vox, which was sitting in Roger's corner. I'm guessing it was the amp they were using for songwriting, or -as shown in one of the picts in the book it was wired to Roger's Major and perhaps used as a bass cabinet (it was equipped with H12 speakers). So I made a Major replica with just two KT88 instead of four, and the moment I plugged my Strat through my HS booster I knew that it was the right combo. Cheers!

    Добрый день! Я восхищен работой, котораю Вы проделали. Надо иметь очень хороший слух, чтоб не только воспроизвести Ritchie's тон, но и пространственную обработку. • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před rokem +1

      Thank you so much for your comment! Much appreciated. From what I know the Q-Filter works in a similar way as the MTC that Dawk Stillwell created for Blackmore. It was wired to his neck pickup only and it acted as a high-pass filter. It basically removed some low frequencies from the overall sound. I never tried it personally but I heard from other people who say that it doesn’t really make a lot of difference. Cheers! M.

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 3 lety +1

      @@mgalbu Thanks since I am brushing up on the H55 speakers as I have read they have an increased bass response aiding in Blacker's MH tone. So many variables to consider as I also like some treble response for other RB tone eras. At the moment perhaps having two separate 2x12 cabs with one for bass response and another for more upper mids likely with the H55-PVC if one is to remain faithful to the Scumback products.
      I just looked for a Pulsonic and saw an UK listing for the Celestion Rola Pulsonic G12H for just over $400 Canadian plus very expensive shipping and import charges.

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 3 lety +1

      @@conradsteeves9377 The way I see it there's no need to change speaker types for Blackmore's different eras. Just do what he did. From '69 to '73 he used a modified Hornby Skewes booster. From '73 to now, a modified AIWA TP-1011 preamp. Both have different tonal ranges. That's a much cheaper and effective way to get closer to the different original sounds than having two separate cabs IMO.
      Regarding the Pulsonics. Most are 16 Ohm. So if you are planning to put them in a 2x12 (in the event you find them in good condition in Canada or the US) you'll have to find the ultra rare 8 Ohm version of the G12H 55Hz, the T1460

      EDIT: Came across two Celestion G12T-75 ‘Large Rib’ Pulsonic cones for sale which I read their sound is very similar to the older Pulsonics but are considered slightly brighter at lower volume levels.

    Great vid, superb sound, GREAT playing! Love it!
    Your tone here comes VERY close to the Blackmore studio sound. Are you by any chance willing to share your view on the Hornby Skewes mods? On his forum, John Stillwell insisted the "magic" came from a 1973 Fairchild 2N5139 transistor. I'm surprised, because this couldn't have been used on the MiJ album then. Then I hear your modded Major without booster... WOW!!!
    In my opinion this is a sound no Kemper or other modelling/profiling amp can even come close to...

      @WlatvanGroningen Před 5 lety

      Forgive me, I'm not trying to steal your mods, I just get over-enthousiastic on the Blackmore sound and tech behind it. Sadly, mr Stillwell never got to publish his book promised on his forum about all the mods he made for his famous rock star clients. I guess that is part of the magic too now...

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Wlat! The mods to the booster were just a few really. Mainly one or two components and adding the Level knob. What really makes the difference in tone are the mods to the Major. The amp by itself has to nail the sound before the booster can add any colouring to it.
      Dawk came way after the MKII days and I never read anything from him on Blackmore's Deep Purple sound that sounded truthful to me. All his mods can be heard perhaps on Rainbow albums but I wouldn't know as it's not my favourite Blackmore tone. Too thin and trebly.
