How To Get Ritchie Blackmore's Deep Purple MKIII Sound - You Fool No One

  • "You Fool No One" by request from my friend Mauro of the great Five Doctors Band! :) Check them out on Facebook for amazing Deep Purple covers.
    By 1973 Ritchie Blackmore had replaced not only Gillan and Glover but his Hornby Skewes booster and main Strats as well. Fender had made no changes in pickup construction at the time so we can assume that the bulk of the sound was very similar to his MK2 Strats. Other factors like the die-cast tremolo bridge/saddles and ash body also affect the sound but in a more subtle way.
    The real change in tone was driven by the AIWA TP-1011 that he modified to use as a preamp platform in front of his factory-modded Marshall Major.
    Leave a comment if interested in the amp or pedal as I build both to order using high quality parts and accurate circuits that faithfully reproduce the sound of the originals.
    Thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you liked the video.
    * Guitar parts are approximate. Backing track extracted with Riffstation.
    Echo effect added in ProTools. No EQ was needed in Post.
    * Some of Blackmore's fills are in the same frequency range as the vocals and I couldn't remove them properly from the backing track. So I left the original parts.

      Thanks so much Robert, I appreciate your comment! I do analize the solos myself as I got used to do back when turntables could slow down LP records to 16rpm. I use Riffstation now, it's really good, it isolates and slows down the guitar parts without shifting the pitch of the song. Those small details in the playing are easier to hear and that helps a lot in making it sound like the original. For some reason Fender bought Riffstation and killed it. It was not perfect but I don't see a lot of alternatives either! Cheers, M.

    Sound fantastic! I've long thought that is a very underrated song by Purple too.
    BTW - Do you have any experience using that Tp-1011 pedal with humbucker equipped guitars? I play a Gibson Explorer through a black panel 60s style 50 watt Fender Bassman I built myself. I've been looking around for a while for a nice boost pedal to add a little 'color' to the front end.

    Burn is probably my favourite Blackmore album so I'm tempted by the Aiwa pedal, but I also LOVE the tone he got on Made in Japan, and on tracks like No, No, No (at The Beat Club). I run a Marshall 100w JMP Master Volume head into a 4x12 with G12-80s, which pedal do you think would give me the most options?

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! To be honest you can't really get the MK2 sound with the MK3 Aiwa pedal, but the Aiwa preamp is more versatile than the MK2 booster. You really need both! :D
      I'll give you a discount if you're interested.
      Cheers,

    Thank you very much for this great video! It just remebered me to listen to more Deep Purple Songs. I just have to ask, what did Blackmore change on his Major 200 ? Is it just something for more power?

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much! Yes, Blackmore was looking for more power as well as a specific tone that the stock Major couldn't deliver. So the guys at the Marshall factory did a series of modifications till he was happy with the sound and loudness, in combination with either the modified Hornby Skewes booster ('69-'73) or the modified AIWA preamp ('73-now). Cheers, M.
