NEW Reaper DUAL SWORD Open World Build

- Now that we have had the 2nd major update of the current Secrets of the Obscure expansion, we get to play with new weapons on all 9 professions. Necromancers have gained access to dual swords, which all have a primary effect, and a flip-over skill that sacrifices health for even greater benefits!
The crowd control built into the sword skills synergises perfectly with the Reaper's propensity to benefit from chill, and adding bleeding on top. We combine this with different other traits that will allow us to add vulnerability to any enemy that becomes afflicted by our debuff, to increase the damage they take.
The build itself is more than capable to maintain permanent quickness, 25 stacks of might, several stacks of stability, and now, thanks to the sword abilities, we finally have access to a long range dash on a relatively short cooldown.
With all this excitement it's easy to forget we also have access to Reaper Shroud, which gives us access to more skills that all help inflict vulnerability, chill, and thus bleeding, and add a good deal of crowd control on top!
Ever since this new expansion, new relics were introduced. We'll be using Relic of the Reaper to turn every single utility skill we're bringing into another source of chill, and thus damage!
This build will decimate any low health enemy, and will shred through the remainder of stronger foe's HP like a knife through hot butter!

I have something similar to this build! I LOVE it! So what you do is instead of shouts, you take all well utility skills, put in relic of the chronomancer for quickness so you can then swap the spite traitline for curses! Curses you select 3 3 3. The first curses trait can actually be to your preference but you def want to choose Parasitic Contagion so it can heal you passively with all the condi dmg you're doing while getting that +200 condi dmg stat from the Lingering Curse trait. Every build has its pros and cons, lots of fun! and have their different synergies.
I do like your variation of the build using the spite trait line, I am a big fan of DREAD and the fear synergy from shroud 3 spam and swords are great! And having more flexibility for the utilities you take instead of being locked into wells is nice....even though spamming your wells is a nice burst.. . Love your vids btw.
@@tm.tedesco thanks! Love your take on the swords as well! Dread is one of my favorite necromancer traits, I often incorporate the trait for my open world builds :)
@@phandrel agreed! Who doesn’t love endless shroud 3 fear/stability spam. Dread is def an underrated trait.
Yes! Having fun with these new builds. This is now what I'm playing today. Thanks for the guide!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I for sure will be investing more time in my necro in the open world.
Ty! I've been looking at how to actually play new reaper, and this is a great starting build.
Hey Phandrel I love your builds. I still use your deadeye build for maping, it's really great. Gonna try this asap, new swords seems fun.
Awesome! I'll be making something with the axe too for thieves soon :)
My Reaper has been dusted off and this is a great build. Kills nearly everything...Good work Buddy...keep it up.
Awesome, and thanks! ANet really made a thing of beauty with necro swords.
I don't know if I've commented on this build before now but it is so much damn FUN! Thank you!!!
Awesome! This one is fast becoming a Pham-Favorite :D, it works in so many situations as well.
Just started testing it and it's amazing and super fun, thanks!
Great to hear!
I final have use of my leggo sword and my necro in OW, thanks to you kind sir.
Love the build! Necro swords are so fun :D
Even if the other skills weren't worth using, I'd still use them for the dash! Solves so many issues I had with on a reaper in the open world.
@@phandrel Now that you mention it, it is such a good quality-of-life improvement. The sword animation is also another aspect of the weapon I really like.
Really diggin this build! For expediency and cost reasons, I went with Runes of Grenth (since you can buy exotic armor w/ it for karma then extract), then I went bleeding/burning duration+ for the sigils since I had them lying around. This may be my new fav necro build.
Grenth is for sure a worthy replacement! I usually try to list the most common runes I can think of, but a lot of combos offer great synergy.
As usual , amazing content. Keep on pushing
Thanks! Got a few more new weapon builds I want to try out 😄
Love ur vids man, I can't wait for the engi shortbow. keep it up
Thanks! I've been having a ton of fun with my engi shortbow, but the build is still missing something.
Should be ready soon, however :)
I thought about new weapons yesterday that they are very strong atm. So lets have some fun before Anet nerf them :)
Definitely! The next balance patch is uncomfortably close (March 19), wouldn't surprise me to see some "tuning"
They wont nerf them this early, they need to sell the soto expac, so no worries just yet
Full dps swords reaper does about 38k dps, i wouldnt worry about nerfs.
Yeah dagger still better build life force sooo dual sword off meta don't worry about nerfs 🎉
I suspect we will still see tuning to these weapons, they are really pushing power harb and wanted to see where it landed with the new weapons before making any drastic changes.
very nice... I had not looked at death magic for dual sword... very cool.
I'm happy I got to incorporate that one for once. I like the idea behind death magic, but it's often outshined by soul reaping, especially in group content.
LOVING your videos!!! Saw your x2 short bow SB video. Do you by chance have a x2 mace SB one??
Awesome, love to hear that! I made an Untamed one, as the ambush attack is pretty insane (czcams.com/video/rkug5lMfL1c/video.html). You could swap out the untamed spec for soulbeast and work with something like this: gw2skills.net/editor/?POwEkMNsMDWHDktxQxi9y/pXi0nD-DSJYiR7fZUbqWRRZ7zBAqA-e
This build works out really well. Love it!
If you don't need the sustain I would recommend going curses .. in there you can use parasitic contagion so your conditions healing.. since this has a lot of bleed.. it might actually be better. You even can get torment damage from fearing, as well as terror which fear does damage in its own condition.
They were really close together in extended fights, so I couldn't resist playing Death Magic, as I rarely get to use that trait line.
But you're absolutely right that curses fits to a tee. Terror in and of itself makes it worth trying out that combo.
this build is insane bro.
Glad you like it! ANet really nailed it with swords, and the extra buff/debuffs they added to every ability.
Well.. I'm fokked. GOTTA try this. I play my Reaper on full full zerk glascannon GS/Dagger+Sword but this looks really fun!
Hope you enjoy! I sacrificed some burst for better sustained damage, which comes in handy in a lot of the new zones.
But if you want to stay with power dps, you could consider swapping out the grandmaster traits for death magic and reaper, and you'll do fine with your zerker gear too.
When using Chill to the Bone and Gain Swiftness on Fear, I strongly suggest Relic of Nightmares over Relic of the Reaper.
The reality is that between Chill to the Bone, Suffer, and fears-not to mention shroud and weapon skills-you genuinely don’t need two more shouts to apply chill. You already have chill on fear and bonus poison damage.
Nightmares goes off on a slight delay after you use the elite skill. This means Chill to the bone applies its stun, and then the fear pulse goes off. Which applies chill and poison, and since chill applies bleed, you get those extra stacks. Which adds up to quite a load of carapace stacks as your one-button opener.
It’s a pretty intense output for a 30 second cool down. Even in full celestial, it’s pretty common for just chill to the bone, or chill + suffer to nuke down entire clusters of enemies.
I personally run Soul is mine, Suffer, Rise, Spectral Walk, and Chill to the Bone. Up to now I’ve used Staff & Dagger+Warhorn. I solo’d two of the canopy bosses during the night in HoT map 1 last night, it’s a very durable build.
I look forward to trying swords, but I’m currently in living world season 3 so it’ll be a lot of story before I get the sword unlock!
Reaper is probably still the better Relic, as you can reapply chill over and over to reset the debuff as well as add another stack of vulnerability, bleed, etc. over and over again as you spam shouts. If Nightmare was on shout, not on elite, it would be way better.
i unlocked mine with 500 WvW coins
@@Cimarb You already reapply the chill debuff by striking chilled enemies with two traits: critical hit causes cold explosion and hits on enemies below 50%. It is technically possible to have chill fall off, but you have to work at it. Even if all you do is auto attack with dagger and use warhorn fear and chill to the bone each on cool down you will keep it up.
Even with relic of the reaper, you’re only looking at at most two extra applications of a single stack of chill (you can only set 3 shouts other than suffer that can buffed by reaper, but Nightmares offsets one of the 3 since it’s fear applies chill) Only nightmares has also given you the quickness and one other offensive buff from dread (iirc it’s the crit chance buff). This makes maintaining permanent quickness pretty doable without having to swap to relic of chronomancer and several wells if you use any two weapon sets that both have a fear (staff, warhorn, off hand sword, etc). Normally, reaper has to use up a utility slot to have 3 short cool down fears outside of shroud.
Nightmares also gives you the extra breakbar damage of that extra fear, which is pretty fantastic on top of chill to the bone’s existing base amount. Cycling all three fears, four + reaper 5’s chunk if you then go into shroud, will break even most legendary mobs on your own.
Finally, nightmares applies poison, which is buffed from the traits you already took, and which Reaper otherwise lacks many sources of. Sure, it’s not itself enough damage to be the sole reason you took it, but the poison and wave damage does offset some of the lost bleed stacks.
@@evans178 Oh! Just the basic WvW currency? Do I need to buy some other specific currency and then buy the sword unlock?
@per1172 there are five 100 Jade coins itens on the Heroics Notary NPC , check the achiev for their names to make sure you buy the right ones.
Once you buy all you get the achiev and unlock the weapons for the whole account
My computer broke just before the new weapons came out and they're looking so fun 😭😭😭
Hopefully, I can save up enough for a new one quickly.
Oh no, that's the worst timing :( Hope you get a solution soon.
I was surprised with the damage output the dual swords have on necro, especially after hearing people not liking them, but that could've been due to being ranged or something unrelated to the damage
Same! I do notice there's often a big difference in how they feel for players focusing purely on instanced content vs open world. For the latter, they're just amazing.
I use swords and a staff on my Harbinger build now. It’s great.
Awesome build! Loving dual swords in OW. What are your food & cons recommendations?
Thanks! As for food, either your standard power or open world food, like birthday cakes works fine.
If you want a very cheap alternative, soul pastries will also grant you some extra concentration, which always comes in handy. Or if you want something unique, try Ghost Pepper Poppers, they have a 40% chance to grant you might during daytime and inflict chill during nighttime.
For utilities, I tend to run with any of the halloween ones in the open world for some extra magic find and experience.
sword feels really good as power , not sure about condi but heck ill try it xD
I recommend replacing spectral grasp for spectral armor, granting better life force generation whenever hit by anything, plus its another stunbreak.
but spectral grasp give enough lf and pull enemies to you, acts as break bar and also chill(bleed) enemies
spectral grasp shortens the encounter duration by killing stuff faster.
the fact that you're not using the crit traits from reaper is
HERESY
They did a great job with sword for Necro but it feels a little bit overpowered right now. But it's fun, add great mobility for the reaper and range damage. Already used this build in a farm train this morning and I just had to auto attack with the sword ^^
Yeah, although I must admit that a lot of the new weapons feel somewhat overtuned.
I guess we'll eventually see some rebalancing.
Sword 1 and 3 are basically all you need for keeping up with a farm train now :D
Their dps in full zerker gear is about 38k, way below any meta dps build
Hi there @phandrel ! I'm currently trying the celestial gear variant and i'm having lots of fun. I'm wondering what you would recommand for food and utility items. Does Master Tuning crystal and Rare veggie Pizza work?
Awesome! Both of those work really well. If you want to try something unique/fun, Ghost Pepper Poppers are an option as well. They'll give you a chance to gain might on crit during the day or inflict chill on crit during the night.
@@phandrel oooohhhh it does sounds fun! Thanks for the idea 😊
This is basically exactly what I put together as a new player, except 2 abilities which I changed to have minions
Awesome, hope you're enjoying the build! Minions are definitely a good thing to have, esp. in the open world. I went all in on shouts (for the bleeds/chill), but Necro is so versatile you can make multiple setups work, or even mix and match skills for specific situations.
Im enjoying axe sword a lot for pve with my reaper
i used the power dual sword reaper build you posted in the comments and im having fun with it :) thank you. i was wondering if you have a pvp build that uses dual swords and chill 👌😊
Awesome! I don't have a pvp build, as I rarely have set foot in arenas in the past 11 years.
I intend to change this soon, though 😄. I'll share whatever I come up with then.
@@phandrel thank you! i've just started playing for around 2 months and i'm enjoying the game so far. will looking forward to updates on the build :)
That sigil of earth icon looks kinda funny.
I didn't notice 😲
Worst is, I rewatch before publishing, but in my mind, I probably thought it looked good
Hi, love the build! Do you have recommendations if i want to use this for a selfish fractal build?
There's a few things to consider, indeed:
- Replace the grandmaster trait in Spite to the middle one, assuming you can get quickness from your team
- I'd recommend curses over death magic (3-3-2, or 3-2-2 when dealing with No Pain no Gain)
- Replace You Are all Weaklings with Well of Darkness
Tnx! Ill try this out
Yeah seems like celestial + anything works for an open world build now. Celestial is fun because you cant die but sometimes feels slow as hell trying to kill things
True! You could take marauder or berserker pieces and change the grandmaster reaper trait to go for a full burst build, if that's more your thing though.
cool guide, but what weapon do you use for the swap? or do you only use the dual swords and then enter the shroud?
For the new weapon proficiencies, I wanted to make builds for every class with the new weapons only. Feel free to add a second set for weapon swap, though: Greatsword would be an obvious candidate, but Staff or axe/focus might be an interesting pick as well.
@@phandrel I see, thanks!!!
I love the new build and i think its super fun to play! For dps purposes its kinda meh compared to a traditional reaper sadly (Testing in lions arch aerodrome traditional greatsword reaper nearly deals double the dmg) :(
You could swap some traits around and keep it as a power build, which will indeed outperform DPS wise. Although, this felt better for me personally when doing rifts and running from pack to pack in the open world, due to the burst with shouts.
But I agree, if you want pure damage, berserker reaper will be the way to go.
Hi! Do u have a version of this with serker gear? I really want to use it on strike missions and i dont want to swap gears in open world that much.
Sure thing! For group content, I'd probably stick closer to the current pDPS reaper build: gw2skills.net/editor/?PSwAwyZlRwOYKMH2IOSXmNbA-DyQYho78fHKwZUrUtCVlMPLAQFA-e
In the open world, I'd swap a few traits around and utilities around to keep the shout gameplay, though: gw2skills.net/editor/?PSwAwyZlJwaYOsNWJOOPvNbA-DyQYho78fHKwZUrUtCVlM/JAQFA-e
Just for shits and giggles I tested this build in PvP, I didn't change anything in traits and skills, I used carrion amulet, same relic same rune, sigil of agony and sigil of peril on both weapons. This is actually crazy strong. You inflict a crazy amount of vulnerability so their whole team is at a disadvantage in team fights and you can keep reapplying chilled, relic of the reaper will get nerfed with a cool down can guarantee it.
Ooh, thanks for letting me know! Going to try this out myself.
@@phandrel sweet! The only downside is lack of mobility. You can swap out rune for lynx, but you lose 20% bleed duration, or you can use warhorn off hand for swiftness, but lose the staff and the staff is great for this build. Personally I just put up with being slow.
How is it damage wise? I am using a zerker build and having a ball, Always like to try the cele versions too though.
Berserker will obviously outperform in terms of pure dps, as we're sacrificing some offensive power in favor of the stat spread of celestial. But overall, you'll have more than enough burst to 2 hit regular mobs, and most HoT HPs should be dead within the minute.
Fine you twisted my arm, I'm trying a another build today. :D@@phandrel
@@phandrelCould you test it on the golem? Especially for videos in the future, because "you have enough burst" is very subjective.
It doesn't have to be a perfect rotation, just a 10 sec segment where you show your dps on the golem.
This dual sword update will be reason, why i will back to gw2 for my favourite class once again. What about combinantion like Reaper Dual swords with greatsword on switch ?
Welcome back! GS on swap would be more than fine, for the coming videos I'll focus mainly on using the new weapons, but having a GS for the execute alone would be more than worth it. Let alone the swirl and extra grab.
@@phandrel Dual sword is still on test server ?
There is no test server, but sw/sw is released fully, yes @@vasto853
hi wanted to know if I change to full viper gear is it possible to take this bad boy to raid/strike content as a condi reaper?
You'd have to make some changes:
- change the grandmaster trait in Spite to the middle one
- swap death magic for curses and go 3-3-2 (3-2-2 when dealing a lot with boons)
- replace "You are all Weaklings" with Well of Darkness
With those changes, your dps should increase rather significantly at the cost of self-buffing, which takes care of by teammates at that point.
Wow, thx for fast reply. tried your condi OW variant and its so much better than power one I was playing before.
I know swords are worse than other weapons but I just love them^^.@@phandrel
What food would you use? Condi?
Power if fighting regular enemies, condi if you're mainly dealing with elites and champs. Or, if you want a somewhat unique recommendation: Ghost Pepper Poppers. Those can grant might on crit during the day, and chill on crit during the night.
Is taking staff critical to this build? I find staff very boring, was hoping to find a sword+sword/greatsword build.
Not at all! I actually didn't use it any of the footage since the cooldown on all of your sword skills is short enough, especially when taking shroud into account.
Feel free to swap it out for greatsword.
I guess time to change my weapons now 😅
I am really hoping that there's a viable build which I can use for raiding . I love the vibe of the sword reaper.
I'm sure the people at snow crows will cook something up. And if they don't, I'll give it a shot 😅
@@phandrel Would love to see it and try it. I've been playing GW2 , but as filthy casual since 2013 . I have 0 knowledge of what will work good with what in different content and I have to rely on the content creator people to show me de weei
@@TaLa7aMcHo Just your regular power reaper does 38k dps, about 30k if you wanna stick to just the swords without weapon swap.
@@missk1697 If reaper form counts as a weapon swap , I do that.
I hope its useful. I'm still a little bitter swords are ranged.
Swords play smoother than I expected myself, especially once you add quickness to the mix.
I think that they went for this choice because of necromancers inherent lack of gap closers.
@phandrel Swords are mostly just sitting on axe's playspace and power creeping them. But the mobility is fun.
While swords might not have the samage I wish ele pistol was half as fun to use as these are 😢
Yeah, ArenaNet really nailed it with Sword's design. I would agree that it makes certain other weapons feel rather bland. Although, I'm sure people will eventually come up with some cool combos for the ele pistols :)
Benchmark of this build ?
Without any external input/buffs, you'll get around 12-13k in celestial, which is bumped up to 15-16 with viper's. This should be enough to take care of champ HPs in a timely manner, the initial burst is pretty high, though, which is why it translates well into OW for regular mobs too.
Love my necro but the movement annoyed me, loving these weapons and the build enables me to bounce around like a willbender, wish a trait cd on the 3 skill would be qol
Oh, that would be amazing. Being able to reduce Sw 3 by either fearing or finishing reaper shroud auto attacks would definitely make this one feel amazing.
hum....interesting
How is this build for solo harder stuff like bounties and stuff
Surprisingly comfortable, if I'm honest. sword 3 heals for quite a good amount, combined with life siphon on sword 4 and shroud's tankiness, you can withstand a lot of heat.
You'll gain less benefits from the first reaper trait, so it's fine to switch that to the one that lets shouts heal you, which is another significant boost to your survivability.
questions down below: Can you make an off meta burn necromancer - does it exist? and is it somewhat viable? Burning is cool...
I used to farm a lot of events with this scourge build that stacks quite a bit of burning: en.gw2skills.net/editor/?PSwAs+ZlNwgYPsNmJW6X1PVA-DSJYmR3fhkZIkbi2RV59VBAqA-e
But it needs some updating, I'll try to shake something together soon.
I'm destroying people in pvp with power double sword necro. Having double dash on previously immobile necro is amazing
Oh, I can imagine! Previously, you wanted to kite necros as long as you can. Guess that's out of the window now.
Both viper and celestial are expensive on the trader.
If it's for the open world carrion, dire, and rabid might hold you over until you can make either set.
When you get to making a special set, I'd recommend going Viper's first to also be able to take that to instanced content.
@@phandrelThanks for the tip, I ended up getting viper's first, cost me over 100g but damn is it worth it, this build is crazy strong, nice damage whilst being very tanky thanks to carapace. I won't be surprised if it gets nerfed.
@@australienski6687 the good thing is that the swords are far from being overtuned compared to some of the other released weapons, so I think we might be safe for some time :D
@@phandrel Yes, the swords won't but I think the relic of the reaper will get nerfed with a cool down.
Thats cool and all But Blood will do more damage due to all the life steal ...
I've tried both, and actually had slightly better results with death magic in terms of dps. But they were really close, so swapping those out would work just as well.
Look at this and then look at what we revenants get. Sad.
Yeah, some of the new weapons feel like somewhat of an afterthought.
Scepter in itself isn't bad, but feels far more limited than these, or guardian pistols, ranger maces, etc.
The only new fun weapon ( besides maracas ranger). rest of them were meh..
I gotta admit that I was also pleasantly surprised by guardian pistols.
Staff warrior is no joke
Pistol ele is fun
Lame. I understand the No balance now. P2W game. Expansions.
