- Professional mountain bike racer Emily Batty of Trek Factory Racing helps you decide whether a Hardtail or Full-Suspension mountain bike is right for you based on how and where you're riding. Choose the ride that’s right for you!
Find you local Trek retailer: trek.bike/findyourstore - Sport
whatever your bike, go ride your bike
Really? Never thought about it. Thanks for the advice, who would think bikes are for riding.
I bought a mountain bike just to look at 'cause it's so damn sexy.
Downhill24H MTB you right 3 days ago it whas my birthday my parents got me a Scott voltage yz10 and i ride it every day.
3 days ago? So you rode it 3 times. Wow.
JaBron Junklove I know right I got a trek ds2 today and it’s soooooooooo gooooooooood
I wish she wasn't reading this off a script and have insight from her experience
How do you know she's reading from a script?
She's a professional mountain bike racer for a factory racing corporation. So, she's a employee for a factory racing corporation. That's not a personal, but a corporative video. So, she's reading a script. With the company speech.
Ahh I see.
+Gilberto Nascimento : perhaps. But once you know that, they could have taken my granny neighbor to do the speech, it would have been as valuable.
What experience? I've seen 10 year olds shredding harder than her.
This is just them trying to sell more expensive full suspension. Hardtails are great for everything especially if you're a beginner
Tristan Radeka not only that but they’re easier on maintenance side of things. Especially good for someone who isn’t mechanically inclines
tristan radeka they are not trying to sell expensive full suspesion bikes they are just telling us whats the difference between a hardtail and a full suspension bike
I've been borrowing a friend's full-suspension MTB for a while, but now I got myself a hard-tail hybrid just for fitness training around the city, not a real MTB. I've noticed that the seat now suddenly transmits every little bump (even slight street bumps) directly to my bum bones, and it hurts like hell. Is this normal for a hard-tail hybrid bike at the beginning? And will it get better with time? (Thanks in advance!)
Lol that’s exactly what I thought when watching this
@@ce7857 That's not normal unless your city really skimps out on your roads. Even when riding on a rigid fork I don't feel anything so anything so maybe get a better suspension? Or collect signatures idk
You need full suspension on trail? Give me voldka I ride trail wit no bike for mother Russia
XD
Made my day xD
lol
100th like

i use a hard tail and i don't know why but going over bumpy trails seem more fun that using a full suspension mainly because hard tails keep you more aware and you have to play close attention to were your next move will be.
Isn't there a risk of developoing some kind of back pain as a result of your back disks touching each other constantly because of using a hardtail bike over a full suspension one if you, let's say, live in an area where rock roads/bumpy roads are the norm? To be honest, I'd prefer having a healthy back over paying less for a hardtail.
i love hardtails, i like to say on a full sus you ride the trail and on a hardtail the trail rides you!
I have got 3 bikes: fulls suspension for downhill and freeride, hardtail daul bike for 4x, dual slalom and dirt jumps, and one hardtail mtb xc bike for riding to work :). In my opinion it's really hard to find bike for everything so I decided to have a three bikes. Have a nice day!
I feel telling newbies to get a full suspension is there way of getting people to buy more expensive bikes. Right now I'm on a lower end Trek hardtail and found that it has caused me to upgrade my skills to make up for the bike. I am currently about to buy a new Remedy or Fuel Ex but I think the hardtail is key in forcing you to learn key skills that will make you that much better on a full suspension. Also, I've taken this hardtail down downhill ski trails before, while I was much faster and safer on the rental dh bike anything is possible on a hardtail
Preston Harris I agree. A hardtail can go anywhere a fully can go.
I've herd this argument before and logically it doesn't make sense to me. Why would I buy a hardtail get comfortable on it and then go drop another couple grand on a full suspension. I get you say it teaches you better technique, but if you're plan is to eventually go for a full suspension, you may as well learn on the bike you want to end up with and your technique will be fine. It's not like you can't learn and progress on a full suspension, especially if you're riding rougher trails like the video says. If you're still concerned, lockout your rear shock for a while. Your criticism of the video is that they are trying to get you to spend more money, if that's the case, wouldn't they advise everyone to do what you're doing- to buy two bikes instead of one?
Travis Campbell do what you want dude. Most people start when they are younger or just don't want to drop the extra grand for a full sus. But it's a fact hardtails are better for learning skills just like flats are better to learn on. It teaches you to rely on you body movement and positioning rather than your equipment.
jetsgo66 completely unrelated but digging the 1st gen 4Runner in your pic
Preston Harris since I started riding a fully rigid 29er. My skills got huge. Full suspension bikes allow you to do a lot of mistakes and keep going, on a fully rigid, a mistake is usually a crash. I love that, you control the bike. You should try fully rigid single speed....
If you're a true pro buy a huffy
and do a double black diamond :D
I will huffy and puffy and bluffy your diamond down.
Lmao
news: death on mountain bike trail because someone used a huffy
reporters: this dude is a true pro
I hated this. It was very biased and claimed that hardtails are only for beginners and they cant be ridden well on rough terrain, totally not true.
Andrew the truth is the hardtails are for poor people
Mujahedin ya...my $3200 hardtail made me poor, but I luv it anyway. cheaper than my 2 ex wives!
The Pudding Bandit my hardtail was 1300
The Pudding Bandit hard tails was rated by a pro better than fully suspension ,full suspension was for comfy rides and hard tail was better at turns and lighter etc
in gmbn
No rear suspension, we die like men
WiFi ayy 💪💪
"All mountain bikes have suspension"
WRONG!
Lol...all since she was born maybe. In the beginning, as you know, all mtb were fully rigid.
Fatbike
eric Liebert well no the air in the tires give the most suspension
When I was young my dad bought me a 200 dollar bike from dicks and it had no suspension. He said it was a good bike and thought I was just bad at biking.
@@brinty4334 Very true but the discussion in question is about full Vs hardtail and therefore what she is saying is that all Mountain bikes have one of these. She is not discussing tires. If you go down that road then the entire bike has some degree of suspension, the flexibility of the frame, forks and handlebars as well as the deformation of the wheel structure through elastic deformation of the spokes under tension - and the tires. But that's not what she's talking about. She's wrong, of course, there are mountain bikes without suspension - my Marin Rocky Ridge, a classic in it's day (1993), has none. Its still going strong - which is more than can be said for my elbows, knees, back and neck...
Great informative video! Clean crisp and to the point!
Thanks
I have a hardtail and full suspension I prefer my hardtail because it feels right for me but anyway a bike is a bike
I just bought a Full Suspention bike because I have way more fun with it, than with a hardtail. Im not riding crazy trails or so and Im doing wheelies most of the times. Its just so smooth and chilled :D
"However" just buy both if you're a true MTBer 😉 N+1
Ayyyyy heard that from IFHT?
sunny swag IFHT ?
Off Season Stephen another youtube channel, how to be a mountain biker video is what he is refering to
KRAD Racing yeah thanks for the response. Figured it out after a little googling
Off Season Stephen ifht lol
2:51 that "drop" 😑
I cant afford a full suspension so i ride hardtail everywhere and it works!
Triszo same here
It makes you a good rider too. For the basic skills.
@@sanelemaziya2498 for all skills
For starters I would definetly recommend hardtails because it’s way easier to learn basic techniques such as bunny hops or jumping
Do pivots on the rear suspension wear out at some point and you have to change your frame ?
definitely reading a piece of paper loving my boardman pro 29 er great 2nd bike
I have one trek full suspension, serie CLV MOUNTAIN 9.9, im love this bike... omg❤
I love my TREK Fuel EX 9.8 Project One - Full Carbon ♥️🚲
Wow, this was really helpful!
Thank you! Now when I go into the bike shop with all the super cool looking pricey bikes, I'll kinda know what the heck I'm talking about. This was handy.
thanks for the review dear
My first mountain bike was my dads diamondback from the 70s. No suspension at all and i rode it fine for years
In short: if you're doing crazy shit, go for full. If you're just using it for causal rides go hardtail
chrle in long, many people do massive crazy dirt jumps on hardtails.
Sounds like a sales robot.
Yup
Great recomendations and beatyfull biker !!! I salute yours From Bogotá D.C Colombia!! Great brand!!
can i also drive on comfort trails with full spuspension?
I love my hardtail, sure a full suspension would be nice sometimes but i do fine on my hardtail.
Thanks for your video
awesome Video!!!
get a hardtail and go balls out downhill
Hi, Argus said that its not true that a full suspension bike is heavier than a hardtail because Kenny said so. Also, Fabio Wibmar doesn't always ride dual suspension in his videos and I'm certain if he does he'll improve with my bike tips for him.
How can you tell the difference on that xc bike there's on like 75 mm of travel back their, can you tell that I only ride park.
I’m thinking of purchasing a roscoe 8 but I think I’m going to miss my full squish and I’m not sure
Thank you🤘🏻
I'm buying a suspension buy for all my new bikes now today when I was done my mtb trail I was riding around a park watching my bros and sis then I rode on the grass full speed and I didn't know there was a super deep hole I thought I would die while I was falling but all that happened was my helmet when down to my face and my suspensions sprung me up
Can you make a hardtail to a full suspension bike?(really curious)
Informative. Nice reading Emily!
Im riding with a hardtail on tracks its a little unstable but i like it , its like a challange :D
I have a regular full suspension mountain bike would It work?
Looking to getting back into mountain biking. Back in the day I used a hardtail (late 90s). I’m estimating approx. 30-40% on mountain bike trails with the rest being spent on gravel trails, and you occasional paved pathways with my spouse. I had low back surgery two years ago for a pinched nerve but fine since, currently jogging, etc. I was looking at either the pro-caliber (hardtail) or top fuel (full suspension)…any suggestions would be appreciated!
What did you wind up getting?
Im loving my Superfly.
Learning in Hardtail Mountain Bikes for Basic Learning is the Best Thing As you progress learning advance techniques on Full Suspension Mountain Bikes!!!😊🌄😇💖💯
Just a second, Hardtail can sometimes tackle rough terrain better and Jump because the are more agile and most of the time lighter, plus, you can do just as big of jumps on a hardtail as long as you know what you are doing, just have the back wheel land just a little bit quicker than the front, so all of the energy gets absorbed by the suspension in the front (if you have suspension)
ReddiCadet thx, bc I have a hard tail and not the money for a full suspension
What's best for mainly on roads & paths (sidewalks)? I'd go on trails sometimes but mostly in urban areas.
Check out our FX and Dual Sport!
Im currently using a raleigh m20 hardtail 2005 model as my bike since i havent cycled in years, should i get a new bike in a few years or should i upgrade it? I've been just cruising it in my town, through parks, along the roads thats all
urban bike or gravel bike should be good
My mountain bike actually has no suspension
Lol same
lol mine has
Cool vid.
I have a hard tail and I go to the mountains and do jumps with it, it is my free bike from elementary
I feel like hard tail is the way to go for me. I feel like it may be more rigid goin down some rough terrain but it's way cheaper.
What about fully rigid 29ers?
Trek this is very very useful
Im a fourteen year old kid and i gave my brother's bike to united cycle they said it will take four days, what if i say ill do it myself in less than one hour.
I ride a fixie wtf am I doing here
I'm sorry Trek, you're an amazing company that makes amazing bikes, I'd love to one day own another, but there is so much left unsaid here that I cannot and will not show this to my beginner mtb friends, as well as everything said below my comment about not all bikes having suspension and all the other things , what struck me probably the most is talking about full suspension bikes like they are the only bikes that can be upgraded with new/different/better parts.
This video is misleading as is the title, and gives a fraction of the information that it could give; the size of that fraction is not something I will decide, but I'm sure I could do better describing than this video in its intended purpose and in a similar time, cause I have done so to friends and others, and have gotten them interested in MTB.
I'm working to help 2 of them buy their first good (non-Walmart ) mountianbike currently.
She's wrong, of course there are mountain bikes without suspension - my Marin Rocky Ridge, a classic in it's day (1993), has none. Its still going strong - which is more than can be said for my elbows, knees, back and neck...
많은도움이 되었습니다 감솨합니다
the video was fine but the whole time i was cringing the whole time about how her seat was all the way up the whole time. i’ve tried it and it just feels really brittle when i ride
anyway go with a hard tail as a first bike so you can learn to chose your line and plus you be a better eidee
rider
damn. the conclusion is "it depends on what you do or where you go with your bike". who don't know this? and most of her talking is general information everyone knows.
The fact that the pitch of her voice is in the roof and that she is reading off a script sucks.
thanks
Full suspension for the win!
Well I decided to buy hardtale
If i didn't watch this video probably I'll agonize about which should I buy hard or full
Thank you Trek Bicycle
I believe there is some misinformation in this video.
If you are a beginner, you won't have the skills to ride technical terrain and so you don't need a full-sus.
Hardtails are lighter, simpler and a lot cheaper than full-sus and are easier to learn new skills on.
Less suspension means more pedalling efficiency.
is it easier to wheelie on a hardtail or is easier on a full suspension bike? (sorry if i spelled something wrong)
imo hardtail is easier, because when you wheelie a full sus and tap the brake the shock compresses causing you to go further back. That doesnt mean you cant wheelie it tho.
thanks for the info. now i know the difference. =)
In philipines we call that shock and in front shock too
Com certeza a minha será uma full suspension
If you have a full suspension iTS harder to get up a rock or for that sort, if you get a hard tail. Dune
Suspension is a new thing in mount biking when mounting biking first started suspension wasn't a thing
Mountain bike perfect for street because of Port Holes and Rough Edge sidwalk.
I've been told by professionals that they hate suspension. Me myself I don't like suspension bikes. I feel like I have more control. I can feel every fall every bump I can tell it's coming before I get there. Need myself I use my body as a suspension.
The way he was cycling..looks quite same if he cycles on indian town's road..just like my town!
I just got a 2017 trek marlin 6 hardtail!
Time Lapse Mania so?
Time Lapse Mania ayeee I know someone that has that. I got the Trek Xcaliber 7
10 Point for Trek
Guys a full sus is amazing for urban riding(jumping stairs and stuff)
Full suspension for life
Was a lifelong hardtail guy. Bought a scott genius. Recently was having buyers remorse and bought a hardtail. Rode it 5 times and realized full suspension is the only way to go. There are no benefits of a hardtail unless you are on a smooth surface. Having at least 100mm of rear suspension and 120 on the front are essential on a trail regardless of how easy its perceived. Just have a lockout and its golden when needed.
Most of us don't have money for that and don't really need it that much so we just get decent front suspension and just stand on pedals so shock of hitting ground will be less disturbing than on full suspension bike
Ich liebe mein Trek.
Durability???
For me full-squishes are the best
I have a hardtail mountain bike.. It's alot easier to drive and you learn skills faster than on full suspension bike... If you actually want to go with the full suspension.. I reccomend you going for a hardtail first so you get your lines easier to drive on and feel the roughnes of the terrain on your ass.. It's easier.. At least for me
Full suspension may be hood, but who has the money though?
rider using a hard tail as a beginner makes you a better rider
Si mido 1.75 esta me serviria
Tfw you know comments gonna be more useful and sensible than the whole video.
hardtails are great for speed
i am telling you this from my experience
but when it comes about cycling on rocky mountains
its better to have a full suspension bike
if you don t want the hardtail bike s chair go up your arse
I find at the moment hardtAils because it's makes it even more challenging and fun
Wich bike is easier to wheelie
My man here asking the real questions and I think answer is hardtail
最初のシルエットわかりやすい
But you can go on an extreme mountain biking with a hard tail
Emily is not just a talking pretty head, but is a real athlete. Wiki - "Emily Batty is a Canadian cross-country mountain biker. She won a bronze medal at the 2016 World Championships. Batty is the current Pan American Games champion and was the silver medalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She won the gold medal at the Pan Am games in Toronto in 2015 in her home country."
And TREK sponsors her.
to be honest hardtail is really good for wheelies and bhops or jumps but its every one choice.
I have a hardtail xD and I will buy a enduro bike
Bike Trek 👍👌
i love my Trek Top Fuel 9 : perfect bike form me !
You're rich!!
I like how trek sells a fully ridged stashe and they say all mtb bikes have some squish.
Squish is fun to say
