    I know this is an older video, but wanted to say thanks for showing it done with a skid steer. SO MANY DIY vids for patios and other excavation work only ever show people breaking their back with shovels and I was like "surely you could rent a skid steer or mini ex to do this, right?" For a few hundred you get the excavation done in a day AND save your back. That's a deal in my book.

    Would you consider doing a step by step video for dummies on sloping away from your foundation for paver patio? I have watched so many, & still don’t understand how to properly & accurately accomplish this. All the ones you have done are great, but can’t find one on sloping.

    For just a backyard patio I thought it was 4 inches of base, 6 inches for heavier applications like a driveway. Could be a little savings for some! I like your technique of painting the low spots ahead of time btw.

    • @Romanstonehardscape
      @Romanstonehardscape  Před 6 lety +4

      I have heard of 4" for patios, but I have never seen it work effectively. Driveway applications require 8-12" of base rock.

    • @dirtyd3402
      @dirtyd3402 Před rokem

      The 4” and 6” are for poured concrete applications not pavers. Pavers are individual pieces so the thicker the actual base the better. With pavers a 12” base is pretty thick and will most likely not budge overtime.

      @austinkramer3264 Před 4 lety +1

      @@Jaxsolo simplest way i think is to compact more of your base in the low area to get your desired slope. it may require a step + a retainer or more dirt to get the correct slope from patio edge->end of yard. does this make sense?

    • @austinkramer3264
      @austinkramer3264 Před 4 lety +1

      your gravel base will be 9" thicker on the low side to get your 1% slope. it will require some more dirt work to get the runoff away from the patio to the end of your yard

    Can you do this same process on sand? I live in the desert and my backyard is full of sand. It’s the same consistency as beach sand. The kind where you sink a little with each step. I’m struggling to determine the best solution to lay a foundation for pavers.

    Why not use string levels across the surface and just rake the material up to the bottom of the string. Better way to start

    • @dirtyd3402
      @dirtyd3402 Před rokem

      You could but initially it would be more work. It would better be used after compacting. Also with a string leveler you would have to look closer, with a straight board you can see the unleveling because it shows shade. Much easier to find the unleveling that way. String would be better for higher not lower.

    • @tjwukitsch6505
      @tjwukitsch6505 Před 3 lety +3

      Length x width x depth in feet gives you the cubic footage. Lots of materials sites have calculators on their websites that give you approximate numbers in tonnage to convert from volume to weight.

    When do start considering sloping for water drainage

    • @TerryPagel
      @TerryPagel Před 6 lety

      Good question. The slope was already determined before excavation. It is covered in the layout video. We do not "level" the gravel in this video. We keep it straight following our layout plans. The thing that makes this a little less than obvious is that the lot is near level, so we get to us the sites drainage with little adjustment.

    What kind of rock do you use?

    • @TerryPagel
      @TerryPagel Před 6 lety +6

      The crushed limestone used goes by many different names depending where you live in the country. It is crushed rocks that are approximately 3/4" minus- all the smaller sizes down to fines. The best thing to ask for is road base. It is the same rock used locally in your area on a road base. Because of that it is very common. That is the rock you are looking for.

    No size of rock even though you said would say later. So 1 inch rock on the bottom and two inch on top? You said you were going to show how to slant the base so you have rain run off. Why not. If you say something you should follow through. If you leave things out are you assuming pp know this Then your title of the video should be this video is for pp who have does this a few time. You didnt "Proof read your video," I would give an E.
