I don't think some of these young men understand how prestigious it is to be an infantry officer. Then to build experience in the infantry before going SF (which is essential elite infantry) is huge. Listen to Jake!!!
Navy Chief who just commissioned today as an LDO. (Surface Operations). Jake is telling you the cold, hard truth. You guys have NO IDEA how difficult commissioning in service as an enlisted guy is. If you already have the degree, just join via the officer route. These programs are incredibly competitive and are quota controlled. All the OS, STG, CTT, and QM E6's-E8's are applying. Bro, this is the truth. Very well put. I joined in 2010 and wanted to deploy. By the time I finished training and put in a deployable status, they announced the drawdown in 2011-2012. Deployments came to a full stop and I missed the cutoff by literally a couple months for my career field. From that point, the military was starting to get more gay and politically correct. Army Street to Seat Warrant Officer Flight training is super competitive. Since it does not require a degree to be a WO1 & Rated Aviator. The Army gives zero points to the recruiters for the effort to process an individual for a Warrant or Commission package. I left the USMCR for Army flight school instead of pursuing a USMC Commission & Flight School because I was worried about my ears and eyes quitting. At Quantico Apparently they had heavy weapons training at the end of the basic school so people would show up Deaf at Pensacola. Heard of a few guys not passing the hearing test, it made me move over to the for Army WOC quickly. The USMC needs more infantry officers than aviators. Flight school is all work with all the academic demands, prepping every day for flight line, Army Crap & PT, etc. if you’re married, it’s zero time for a wife. Flying comes first & military flight training is a fire hose learning environment. In dealings with recruiters you have to push them to get what you want, flight school and officer programs scare recruiters away, you may have to shop for another recruiter. Military wide it’s now a 10 year Active service obligation after Winging, more than halfway to retirement with a lot of deployments under your belt. The best way to go to flight school is get a Guard or Reserve unit to sponsor you & control your clear by moving units if you need too. Reserve component flying units are great networking opportunities. Reserve components have the recruiters and they to do their own hiring. Retired CW3, USAR.
@@jakezweig Yes, I did fly & retired from USAR. As a Warrant Officer Candidate you were on SGT pay with Officer expenses in 1985 at Fort Rucker. The Married WOC’s we’re on food stamps & we were required to live in the barracks under a rigid OCS system, while learning to fly. My commissioned side of the class was heavy West Point, since I had a Fall class start after the 2LT’s had finished their Officer Basic Course before flight training. My first time to be exposed on a equal training level with Commissioned, since WOC’s were poor enlisted & my commission classmates had a pay for everything when we went out & study groups. The 2LT’s complained WOC’s were expensive. As new WO1 I got paid back with my Crew Chief, who like to eat on long cross country trips. The first Navy SEAL I ever saw was at Rucker, he was on medical hold for a heat stroke. Apparently he had been an E-6, moved over to the Army for flight school & tried to prove how tough he was to the TAC Officers during the six week harassment OCS course before Primary. The flight surgeon permanently grounded him, can’t have a heat stroke and fly. In Aviation you get put on medical hold you’re probably never fly again & processed out the military. SOF seems to have the same medical rules. In Army Aviation as WO you have a lot of autonomy as an Aircraft Commander, but you will sleep in Tents & deploy a lot. And will have sometimes complete idiots as your Command Structure making you play Army against your will when you want to be flying. Enjoyed your video.
Becoming an officer right now is extremely difficult. Having this issue now because my college GPA sucked bad, all the branches won’t take me at this point despite leadership experience and physical fitness.
Makes it feel more genuine when a former Navy guy is telling people to go Army Officer route. The point of getting more opportunity to go to schools makes sense to me.
Appreciate the advice… I went in to talk to a Navy recruiter and I wanted to take the officer route but they were telling me that they dont know what test the officers take and they think its the same as the ASVAB 💀🤣💀🤣🤣🤣 do officers take the ASVAB or not?
As a former E4 during the Vietnam Police action I would encounter an O1 and ask myself "can this guy pour piss out of a boot?" I was USAF, scored over 90 on all four section of the entry exams, had a SAT score that would have gotten me into any college anywhere but no money. I was comm /crypto and a crypto account manager with an O1 or O2 above me who kept making major security faux pas. Learned a lot in four years, got out, got my degree hoping to return in a pilot slot but was too old. DID YOU REALLY TAKE A COURS IN CERAMICS IN GRAD SCHOOL?
It just blows my mind why would someone that goes to college and be the age of 20s+ would want to go enlisted voluntarily as someone who basically had to drop out of school and do manual labor all of his life to support himself. I would give anything to actually go officer and got that bag, status, and leadership position but thats just me I guess but some people have it so good compared to alot of us plebs and don't realize it at all.
One of my best buddies went to Yale University for college, was the captain of the football team, worked on Wall Street for 2 years and went enlisted to bud/s. He’s been an active team guy for just about 4 years now and said it was the best decision he could’ve made. He’s been doing the shit he signed up to do. Getting combat deployments, got to go to the “cool” schools in the teams right out the gate after SQT. He runs a successful clothing/apparel business on the side - there is not a one way only avenue for shit.
@@VanyaTheSlavicthe thing that people don’t understand is even as enlisted, as soon as you make sergeant, you’re ass is gonna be in charge of people and responsible for them just like an officer. So at that point in your career you’ll be saying to yourself “man, really shoulda went officer, I’m doing the same shit as them and getting paid half”
but he is very lucky to have made it@@Deepblue417 and is the 1% exception. The other 99% of people who did that will end up chipping paint. Theres better chances in the Army to get what you want thats the whole point in where Jake is coming from.
The number of guys here saying they want to join....guys RECRUITING IS DOWN! Just go to a recruiter already BUT use any credible vets you know to help wade through their garbage.
Bottom line of what Jake is saying is join the army due to opportunities. Everyone wants to be a seal but everyone also wants to be a pro athlete. Very few make it and very few last.
Hey Jake, informative video as always. I wanted to ask you about enlisting in the Army and getting a 4-year degree while serving in Infantry/Airborne, then going officer later in my career. Is that a good plan for someone pretty much out of high school with no degree? Thanks.
Best advice if you have no college is get to your first duty station, be a dude (run fast, ruck hard, shoot straight) then get your ranger slot. Come back after ranger and drop your Green to Gold Active Duty Option packet. The ranger school part is important because if you don’t have 2 years of college already, they’re going to board you for a 4-year option and you need something to stand out.
Let’s say a person enlists, goes through selection, becomes a green beret, and then wants to become an officer. They will have to get picked up for OCS, go serve in the regular army, put a packet in for AFAS, be allowed to attend, and make it through again.
If you a recruiter. Especially army anything asvab 50/110 gt is double points. Officer get you a lot of points. But you gotta have a 3.7 gpa and a 110 gt score aka 65+ asvab score to get approve for officer.
@@jakezweig a 2.3. I can’t believe it. Well congrats to them. I never saw an officer packet get taken serious and approved with anything less than a 3.5 gpa minimum. I’m not on the board but on the outside looking in.
They don't have a reenlistment problem. They have a recruiting problem. E4 is the biggest rank in the Army. People getting in and out in the first contract is the norm and its expected. Nobody is saying if the E4s stayed the situation would change.
Jake hope all is good! I am a 23 year old with about 40 credits( 2 semester and one summer) left to get my bachelors degree. From the talks with my recruiter hes told me I can go enlisted 11B, get my degree then transfer to officer. I am interested in the Regiment and an option 40 contract. As a 11A My question is the following.. Which path would you recomend I take? Go in the army as enlisted ASAP and trust that Ill be granted the change from E to O? OR Focus no finishing my bachelors then joining as an officer? Thank You, hope to hear soon.
@@jakezweig Thank You! Could you host a 75RR 11A for a video sometime soon? Would greatly appreciate it .. not one video on that topic. Would be great for the channel!
@@chrishernandez4640 the line units in regiment are basically the exact same in structure as regular army. You are still light infantry. There are differences, but a rifle platoon still lives inside of a rifle company. Get familiar with what an 11A does a PL in big army. If you have a degree and go to ocs, regardless of where you branch, you’re still a sir/ma’am from day 1. There’s no reason to go enlisted whatsoever. This is “peace time” army so being enlisted means a lot more time cleaning toilets than cleaning up a bad guys brain matter.
I'd imagine he'll say it's a worse choice than SEALs because it's just as difficult as BUDS, but there's even less positions to actually fill on a SWCC boat crew. You'll spend most of your time either on a crowded Navy ship with all the other depressed sailors or alongside the Coast Guard looking for possible drug smugglers. You'll most likely never actually receive a primo SOCOM assignment to insert and retrieve SEALs at any time in your career. There's really nothing for SWCC to do during peacetime but the day-to-day boring stuff. You'll spend your Navy career like everyone else doing the same training drills over and over again for average pay, with the downside of having no combat to tell your grandkids about someday
I’m 17 in highschool, want to get a degree in cyber security with certs, no gf no close family other than my dad and want to enlist to be 18b 20th sfg. Should I go officer?
I think he is talking about being an officer in the Ranger Batt. All officers move around to different assignments in order to move up. You could go to Ranger Batt as a PL for a couple years and then have an opportunity to become a company commander with a unit at 10th Mountain (if there are no opportunities at Batt) or you could come over from a conventional unit as Captain and put in a few years at Battalion before moving up. Officers have to take commands at various assignments in order to be best positioned to make Colonel and then eventually have a shot at being a General.
@@parawill7074right on target bro. You have basically 15 minutes to be a pipe hitter as an officer in regiment and that’s a 1LT PL. Watershed moment after 1LT. If you are hitting captain and you still wanna “make that thang go bang” it’s basically SF selection, Virginia, or the Bearded Batt Boys. Other than that, gonna hop in and out of regular army and regiment
Its a cutthroat organization, gotta make room for the new cats coming in. I had no idea id only get one year as a line medic, its part of the reason i got out, my only options were taking a desk at headquarters company or getting a senior (company) medic slot but still, not on the line with the joes, pretty much just doing paperwork, medical readiness, and developing and submitting training schedules.
I don’t get what you mean when you say what these Chiefs were saying. From my experience a Chief’s word is usually taken over JOs. A lot of it has to do with experience and damn near most of the Chiefs have degrees anyways.
@@jakezweig will do but it’s not a big deal. I definitely agree that if you have a degree why waste your time on the enlisted side unless you want to be a warrant. I went to boot camp with an ADM’s son who had a degree and went enlisted because he thought it would be easy getting through BUD/s but it took him two shots and a daddy hookup to her back to BUD/s.
I’m a 28 years old past football player with a college degree wanting to join as an officer in the air force . But when I was a student my gpa was not good at 2.8 . Do I a good chance to be accepted?
I personally couldnt imagine serving during peacetime. Odds of making it into special operations are about as good as making it onto a factory motocross or supercross team or any professional sport like the nfl. This guy wont make it because of his injuries... its unfortunate but i doubt he will get through any selection process much less make it as an infantry officer. Retired CW3, USAR.
did you end up going and flying in the ARmy?
What email me jake.zweig@gmail.com were not having any problems

Makes it feel more genuine when a former Navy guy is telling people to go Army Officer route. The point of getting more opportunity to go to schools makes sense to me.

Yes I will thank you
Appreciate the advice… I went in to talk to a Navy recruiter and I wanted to take the officer route but they were telling me that they dont know what test the officers take and they think its the same as the ASVAB 💀🤣💀🤣🤣🤣 do officers take the ASVAB or not?
Nope not in the navy . In the army yes
OAR or ASTB for pilots I think
1 course I took 16 hours out of 66
if a person gets tired in active duty a person could go air force reserves not to bad. Could stay in one weekend a month except deployments

Truth is everyone can be an Indian but not everyone can be a chief ..with that being said recruiters should be more particular in recruiting
Hey Jake, informative video as always.
I wanted to ask you about enlisting in the Army and getting a 4-year degree while serving in Infantry/Airborne, then going officer later in my career.
Is that a good plan for someone pretty much out of high school with no degree?
Thanks.
If you want to get a degree while in the Army, don't go Combat Arms. There are no classes in the field and the field you will be.
@@Hasir1986 that's what I was going to say
Best advice if you have no college is get to your first duty station, be a dude (run fast, ruck hard, shoot straight) then get your ranger slot. Come back after ranger and drop your Green to Gold Active Duty Option packet. The ranger school part is important because if you don’t have 2 years of college already, they’re going to board you for a 4-year option and you need something to stand out.
The reason why this program is sweet is because you’re paid as active duty the whole time 🤙
Ok, is there a degree that I should get ? Or does it not really matter too much, as long as I stay away from combat arms?
Brother please make and sell some “Grit don’t wash off” shirts
Let’s say a person enlists, goes through selection, becomes a green beret, and then wants to become an officer.
They will have to get picked up for OCS, go serve in the regular army, put a packet in for AFAS, be allowed to attend, and make it through again.
Yep. Not the best way to do things.

O is definitely better for retirement purposes.
Back in the day any dude that looked like this didn't have a 3.4 at the university level.
Almost every junior enlisted hates life. Why do you think almost nobody reenlists?
They don't have a reenlistment problem. They have a recruiting problem. E4 is the biggest rank in the Army. People getting in and out in the first contract is the norm and its expected. Nobody is saying if the E4s stayed the situation would change.
Jake hope all is good! I am a 23 year old with about 40 credits( 2 semester and one summer) left to get my bachelors degree. From the talks with my recruiter hes told me I can go enlisted 11B, get my degree then transfer to officer. I am interested in the Regiment and an option 40 contract. As a 11A
My question is the following.. Which path would you recomend I take?
Go in the army as enlisted ASAP and trust that Ill be granted the change from E to O?
OR

@@chrishernandez4640 the line units in regiment are basically the exact same in structure as regular army. You are still light infantry. There are differences, but a rifle platoon still lives inside of a rifle company. Get familiar with what an 11A does a PL in big army.
If you have a degree and go to ocs, regardless of where you branch, you’re still a sir/ma’am from day 1. There’s no reason to go enlisted whatsoever. This is “peace time” army so being enlisted means a lot more time cleaning toilets than cleaning up a bad guys brain matter.
Jake what do you think about a young man going the swcc route?
Better be just as prepared as buds .....your body takes a crushing in those boats

Sure
At 11:16 you said "You don't have alot of time in the Ranger Bat" what do you mean by that jake?
