He was probably using a regular sat nav device or Google maps.An HGV sat nav would avoid low bridges.

That's not even close...I don't drive a high vehicle, but I can only assume that these things happen because they are not concentrating and alert to what looks such an obvious hazard...cocooned in the cab with everything else going on, I'm glad it's not me!

It often happens when you're normally driving something that fits under the bridge, like a single deck trailer but on this occasion you were pulling a double-deck trailer and you just take your normail route without thinking. Still no excuse though.
