- Thelawnforum.com -- In this video I show how to back lap a Toro GreensMaster Flex 21. Some of the video will apply to the Toro GreensMaster 1000/1600 model, and the basic steps apply almost any powered reel mower.

Hi Andrew, excuse the comment from a 5 year old video, but regarding touching of reel to bedknife, there appears to be 2 schools of thought. My recommendation is that it shouldn't touch each other at all. Contact between the reel and bedknife will generate heat which will have many effects on not only the turf, but also on the traction unit. The heat generated between the reel and bedknife will tinge the leaf blade. Also that heat can cause the bedknife to expand which will tighten the cutting unit up even more.
No worries, we can agree to disagree.
super great video sir... very well spoken very well explained, just picked up an old mcclane in good condition,, i rebuilt the 3hp briggs and stratton , repainted and replaced all nuts and bolts,, now time to get busy on the backlapping,, thank you sir ... you da man!
tudo cervera congratulations on the new toy! The Mclane reel to bedknife adjustment is a little tricky, give yourself extra time to get it done correctly.
yard looks legit too!
"the longer the better" that's what she said...good info
Mario Ruiz good way to live your life.
Great video Red! Finally got time to watch it, now I'm thinking how I can switch from my Mclane to a Toro Greens!
It's a sickness!
Excellent vid in all aspects. I appreciate the slower pace, it’s a precise technical process. Have you ever sharpened a Tru-Cut mower?
DrewMania yes, it’s not that much different other than the Reel to bedknife adjustment is difficult to fine tune.
Any advice you can give? Those eccentric adjusters are a little intimidating
DrewMania only to take your time. I used a punch and small hammer in one of the spanner wrench holes to rotate mine. It’s not ideal, but worked.
Great video. I guess the same process would work with a swardman reel?!
LetET2010 it would be similar, yes.
great video!! so with a decent reel mower is this all that is needed or do you still need to have the reel and bedknife grinding done as well? looking to buy a used machine and want to fix it up before I use it. thanks
Great question, there will be a point when the edge from backlapping won't hold for more than 2-3 hours of mowing time. That is when you must have the reel and bedknife taken to a pro for either relief or spin grind.
Andrew Barry Cool thanks! I'm in the educate myself phase before I jump head first into reel mowing!! haha
I grind for a golf course. there are two types of bed knives you can run on that mower. if your interested message me and ill find you the part numbers.. there is a greens style knife which allows much nicer cut quality as lower hights.. as the cost of having less material on the bed knife.. they also make a tee's knife which is substantially thicker. I couldnt see well enough from the video.. but if you want longer life from your reel and knife consider replacing it with a tees style bed knife.. unless youre cutting at .110'' then stick to the greens knife
i'm liking the toro flex 21...appears to be more comfortable to control just by looking at it. you have trucut vids as well...do you own both? which do you prefer? i looked into the toro and it appears that it'll only go up the 3/4" height versus 2 1/4" on the toro but correct me on this. great forum by the way. thanks.
HBeretta I sold the TC, Damaged the Flex21 and currently mow with a JD220B. I prefer the Flex21 over them all, but the Max HOC is actually 0.500 stock, there is a set of brackets to can purchase to increase the max HOC closer to the 3/4 HOC you're referring too.
Great video! When you mentioned repeating the whole process 2-3 times, does that include adjusting the reel to bed knife contact again? Or did you mean just apply more compound several times? Thanks for the help!
Sinan Gocmen I normally don’t need to adjust it, but I do check it each time.
😁👍☕
Any chance of you making a video that shows how to adjust the height of cut? Just picked up a 2012 Flex 21 and need to make some adjustments to it.
rhea tomczyk I will do that!
you can use a accuegauge on double roller reel mowers, or place a board under the reel and bottom it out..make sure you set the board under the blade that is not adjustable.if the bedknife adjusts to the reel, set the board under the actual reel, then you can adjust reel and bedknife contact. if the reel adjusts into a fixed bedknife, adjust the contact before you place the board under the reel. this reel just needed a reel to bedknife contact adjustment. good video though. i sharpe mowers for a living and use a manuel foley reel grinder and foley bedknife grinder. www.reelsharpening.com
do u mow twice or once a week? if once. u had no problems with overgrowth?
I'm currently mowing 3 times a week @ 3/8 (0.375) inches. With a light application of PGR! I wasn't expecting 95F in September! Hoping it starts to slow down in a few more weeks.
wow I'm glad I have a rotary lol
Thanks for watching!
Grass Daddy, you wouldn't be glad if you had hybrid Bermuda grass.
Jeff Watson that's true, the maintenance is just much simpler.. swipe swipe of the blade on a grinding wheel and done
You wont ever be Grass Daddy with a rotary.
Grass Daddy but you don't get near the cut quality with a rotary.
5/8 and 18mm on the same machine?
It’s 20+ years old. Many of the original parts have been replaced.
I wasn't aware that the flex 21 would mow higher than .29 inches
0.5 is the Max HOC. Additionally, there is a set of brackets you can purchase to that increase the Max HOC to 0.75. Check out the link below. Thanks for watching.

I wanted to add: There is a rear roller on the Flex head that also needs to be adjusted to the High HOC setting for that max HOC of 0.50.
Red Tenchu No problem, I'm looking to purchase a flex 21 with roughly 200 hours on it. I can't wait to seed my new Bermuda and get her established!
Wow, 200 hours is super low! Is it a Flex 21? Or Flex 2100?
Mine has 1700 hours, so it should last you MANY years
It's a 2100, but don't get me wrong, I'm paying dearly for the low hours.
Whoa dude! Way to fast, 400-600 rpm is good.
The max RPM on that drill is 650. I try to hold the trigger at 75%, but that can be difficult for long periods of time while back lapping. Thanks for the tip.
