    I have to believe that the fact that you are resting the forearm of your rifle on your bench rest has to absolutely effect the accuracy. If your barrel is resting on those 3 fiberglass beds and then the gap between the fore stock and the barrel allows flex, the weight of your rifle on the rest is certainly pushing upwards on your barrel. A true free floating barrel needs a one piece stock that has NOTHING touching the barrel. Your rifle will ALWAYS have a variable depending upon how you rest or hold your fore stock… period, no doubt about it.
    BTW… you could be my grandfathers twin brother! your voice and personality remind me so much of him it is amazing!
    Great video. I hope you find the sweet spot for that beautiful rifle. I have a 1965 99C in .308 Win and absolutely love it. It’s a 1st shot cold bore tack driver. If I wait 20 minutes between shots it hits within 1/2 inch at 100 yards. Once the barrel warms up… it’s anybody’s guess! But as a hunter, it’s the first shot that needs to be where you aim… if you need a second shot it better be close! But after that… I’m gonna get flyers!
    Hope you figure it out and get that cataract removed, it will change the world back to the way you used to see it!
    Cheers!

      It turned out to be that bent take down screw. It is back to tack driving now, with either a hot, or cold, or clean, or fouled barrel. How the screw got bent I have no idea. But it was playing havoc with my accuracy.

    I'm only at the 11:00 minute mark so far, but there is a video on CZcams by a guy called 'Bloke on the Range' a Brit in Switzerland who's background is target shooting and he has a video called "Why a 3 shot Groups isn't " the correct way to determine if a rifle is accurate. I can't summarize it in one sentence but he ends with something like you need to run a 10 or 15 or something shot group to really determine how accurate your rifle is.

    • @dennispritchardoutdoors7882
      @dennispritchardoutdoors7882  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely!!!! It takes many shots over a period of time to determine the true accuracy and zero of any rifle. There was a time when I shot 10 shot groups and then made a judgment call as to that loads potential accuracy. Over time I reduced that number to 5, and eventually to 3. If any load will not shoot the first 3 accurate enough to suit me why waste ammo ? But if it shoots the first 3 accurately then it is on to a 5 shot group. Once I am satisfied with the accuracy and the point of impact, I will shoot many five shot groups over a period of days or even weeks to see if both the accuracy and the zero holds true. Many times a load will shoot very well today but for who knows what reason it looses its accuracy or zero tomorrow. It takes a goodly amount of shooting to say for certain just what a particular load is or is not. But as I said if it will not shoot the first 3 accurately I no longer just keep on shooting it knowing I am wasting ammo. Especially at todays prices!!!
      Shoot a lot and shoot often!!
      Thanks for your comments.

    I have a 1937 in .300 Savage. beautifully accurate with original open sights. I have to tape a 1/16" peep hole onto my glasses these days, but it helps without a scope. I use 39grns IMR4064 under a typical Speer 165grn BT
    But the reason I'm commenting is that from a bench, the rifle jumps up and smacks down on the fore-end. When it does that, I get those flyers. Since I now rest the rifle on a pad under the reciever, that problem has gone away - unless I squeeze wrong. maybe that will help especially with a takedown model.
    or, it's the cataracts. Gotta be. These rifles are superbly accurate, but not bench guns. They will heat up after twenty rounds and lose everything. You'll think somethings broken until they cool down.

    • @dennispritchardoutdoors7882
      @dennispritchardoutdoors7882  Před rokem +2

      Flyers can be caused by a zillion different things, including where you rest the fore end on the bag. You have to be consistent in placing the fore end on the bag.
      I free float the fore ends on all my 99’s, except for two spots of glass bedding. One in front of the take down screw and one behind it. And I place the rifle on the sand bag at this point. That gives me my most consistent fore end pressure.
      And yes you can rest the rifle on the receiver, as I often do to check how and if my fore end might be affecting my shot groups.
      Thank you so much for both watching and for your comments.

      The Savage 99’s have two distinctly different trigger arrangements. Both can be improved greatly, but, and this is a big BUT, the work needs to be done by someone who is qualified to do the job. Although it can be done at home, such as I myself did, there is no way I can tell you how to do it. My advise is to seek out a good gunsmith. I have worked on guns most of my life and am more ,or less , a self taught tinkerer. Not qualified to give instructions on how to fix your problem, but it can be fixed. All of my 99’s have great triggers so yours can also.

    Add addendum: the 99 is not a target rifle. 2 piece stocks are not noted for extreme accuracy as the British Enfield SMLE is a testament of. ( the wandering zero phenomenon)The 99 is a departure from the lever action norm which Savage sought to prove. They are a mark in firearms history which gives them value as does the unique engineering that birthed this iconic rifle that did indeed create a subculture of collectors & marksmen. Within its capabilities as a hunting rifle it proved itself well. The unconventional design was a successful experiment that to this day ignites the curiosity in the hearts of those who have never experienced it. It is a darling around the evening campfire or hunting lodge & is still alive & adds spice & variety to the history it has made for itself.

    • @dennispritchardoutdoors7882
      @dennispritchardoutdoors7882  Před rokem +1

      You are correct. It is not a target rifle. Neither are most rifles. It does, however, carry and handle like a fine O/U shotgun, and has the speed of a lever action, and will rival most bolt actions for accuracy.
      For many years I made a living working on 99’s. Few people have owned and shot more of them than I have. And most of them are indeed quite accurate.
      As far as the two piece stocks are concerned, it depends on more than if it is just two pieces. I am a bench rest shooter and a life long accuracy nut. Some of the most accurate rifles I know of are two piece single shots. If that fore end does not touch the barrel at all then it has no effect on accuracy. And since the butt stock is completely behind the action it also has no effect on accuracy. Rifles such as the Ruger No 1 and 3, the Browning 78, and the Winchester High and Low Walls, as well as several similar actions are the base platform for some mind boggling accurate rifles. Others such as the Winchester 94, and its cousins, and the Marlins can suffer in the accuracy department because of their fore ends contact with their barrels. The Savage is sort of loner. You cannot completely free float the barrel on them as you can on those like the Ruger No 1’s. But you can pretty much neutralize most possible effects the fore end can have on its accuracy. I have developed a three point bedding system that woks wonders on these fine rifles.
      I certainly like a lot of different rifles, but the 99 is right at the top of my list of favorites.
      Thank you for your thoughtful comments.

      As a side note, I have 3 Enfields, and all are remarkably accurate. I have one hand load that I just picked out of the air that I use in all of them. Not as accurate as a Springfield, but plenty accurate enough. The old saying that Germany went to war with a hunting rifle, the USA went to war with a target rifle, and Britain went to war with a battle rifle is putting it pretty well. When it comes to a battle rifle the Enfield far outshines the Springfield and the Mauser. There is a reason it has been used for so many military forces for so long. It is still in use.
      I love accurate rifles, but I have to disagree with the late Col Tounsand Whelen when he said that only accurate rifles are interesting. Rifles that perform their intended use to near perfection are also interesting. The Enfield had more firepower , could be fired faster, from any position, than any other bolt action. And it is still very accurate. Look up “The mad minute,” sometime. It is amazing.
      When it comes to super strong hunting rifles the Mauser gets the nod from me. Pure target rifles I will go with the Springfield. But the Enfield wins the battle rifle competition . Love my Enfields.

      Good question. I do and I don’t. I did for a long time. It certainly can’t hurt, but I have not found it to make any difference whatsoever . I am aware of the theoretical aspects but I personally have never seen it make even the slightest difference in practice. I am sure there are situations where it might make a measurable difference, but I have not seen it. In my video “A Savage Chasing a Zero,” I explain what is certainly a very common cause of weird scope problems. And that was the problem with this rifle.
      It is very important to have the erector tube near center in the main scope tube if you want to avoid a host of problems. And if you did lap the rings and then had to shim the scope your lapping job would be ruined. So I personally try to get that erector tube centered , which failing to do so WILL cause problems, and I no longer spend much efforts on something I have never found to make even the slightest difference. If I had a set of rings that were so poorly made that they had to be lapped I would get my money back and buy another brand of rings.
      But as I said it can’t hurt to lap any of them, I just have never found it to make even the slightest difference.

      Well bullets can certainly be one of the problems for sure. Along with powder, primers, cases, barrel stress, fore arm pressure , changes in both air and barrel temperatures, changes in humidity , where the rifle is resting on the sand bags from shot to shot, trigger squeeze, and a whole host of other things. I have been an accuracy nut and bench rest shooter for 50 years and I am still learning. But the chase for one hole groups is what makes it interesting.
