Sure glad I found your posts! I really enjoy the way you give the history of the cartridge development and the firearm. I took many mulies with a .300 Savage as a young man. It belonged to my uncle and sure wish I had it now. I loved that gun.

Thanks Colin, I appreciate it! That 300 is pretty solid for sure, I'm not sure if you've watched it but I made a video on the 300 as well. There are a ton of 300's out there in the Model 99 too, I'm pretty sure I see more of them than any other caliber. If you ever want to replace your uncles, I bet you could find one. Have a good one!

Not just the best lever action, but one of the finest to carry hunting. I've been hunting with a 99cin 308 for 40 years, a rare bird here in Australia. I now own 2 x 22 Hi-Powers (take-down and fixed) and a 250/3000. A younger friend fell in love with my 308 and now owns a pair of pre 1960 243W and 308W 99 featherweights. I use small objective scopes like a couple of 2-7x32 Leupolds, but would love an old K4 Weaver to put on the take-down. BTW, the 308 shoots sub MOA with Norma ammo and the 250/3000 will with 100gn Dominion or 87gn WW silvertips.

Hey Ian, Thanks for the comments. I packed the 250 and then the 308 around for many years as well. You're right I don't think there is a better rifle to carry. Especially at the end of a long day. I'm glad to hear you got some younger blood into the 308's as well. Isn't it amazing that some of these old rifles, intended for hunting can still shoot sub MOA after so many years of service. Thanks for watching and comment any time you like, have a good one!

Great history on the Savage 99.
Mine is from 1954 and was handed down to me from my Grandparents in about 1964.
My Grandfather and my Father both bought a Savage 99 in 300 Savage on the same day.
My Son now owns my Fathers and I own my Grandfathers.
Like many others, I had my Savage 99 drilled and tapped for a Weaver Scope in the early 70's.
I also had a padded butt stock installed at that time.
In hindsight, I wish that I have not done that now.
I have been reloading for the 300 Savage for over 30 years and these days, I load light target loads using Trail Boss Powder.
This makes shooting the 300 Savage a lot of fun.

There were plenty of cartridges for Savage to look at before he developed his model. It is great work though. I would say the 7.5 Swiss is the closest, although the 6.5 x 55 had excellent ballistics as well. I don't think people give the designers and engineers from that era enough credit, it was not like it was the stone age. Only 50 years later we were flying jets.

These are superb rifles. Exceptional engineering . The only fault the 99's had was what is of course known as the " Savage crack" . Many Savage 99's suffered these cracks where the wood meets the top of the reciever. Many people started to remove that stock and basically relieve a little bit of wood to slow down or stop these cracks from happening.
Other than that Savage really added some super features. Surprised the rifle didn't take off .

Patriot, I agree completely, how these rifles were not more popular is beyond me. I just put a video out this morning on the 303 and mention the tang crack. I have heard of people relieving this area but have not tried it myself. as the rifles I have are already cracked or "safe queens". haha! I do appreciate the comments however. I plan on doing an entire series on the Model 99 with the 22 Hi power next.

    • @jonathantatum8437
      @jonathantatum8437 Před rokem +1

@@leverbolt7699 Always check the fit around the top tang - if the metal is contacting the wood at the rear, you will eventually crack the stock. But the fix is super easy, just remove the buttstock and use a dremel with a grinding wheel to relieve a small amount of wood at the rear of the inlet area. My 1947EG had this condition, so I relieved about 1/32" around the rear of the tang. That was 7 years ago and no cracks have developed.

My Winchester 71 has the smoothest action, most pointable, most elegant looking lever gun I own, and it packs a hell of a punch. The Winchester 88 with its one piece stock, I find is also very elegant looking and functionally equal to the Savage 99. But as far as looks go, it beats the Savage. Best lever action? Maybe the action was, but the aesthetic of the rifle, in my opinion, is a little ugly. I much prefer 86, 92, 94, 71 Winchesters. Marlins also look great. While I know the modern BLR Brownings are built like a bank vault, they are a tad ugly. Savage 99? Ugly. Sorry if that turns some folk off.

Thanks for the comment Lifted! Are you sure we are talking about the same gun? Granted, I have always had an eye for lever actions and would preferer the homeliest lever to the best looking bolt action regardless of manufacturer. That said Winchester and Marlin make some attractive levers. I don't mind the BLR that much either but how can you look at the Winchester 95 or 88 and say the Savage 99 is ugly? I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Just for a frame of reference, how thick are your glasses? Just giving you a hard time Lifted! Thanks for watching and have a good one!
